April Epner(Helen Hunt) may be the first child, but her brother Freddy(Ben Shenkman) is the first born. Does he pull rank and relegate his adoptive sister to the status of auxiliary Epner? That's what April thinks. That's what all adopted children think, at one time or another. As fate would have it, April's biological clock is winding down just like her stepmother; like mother, like daughter, which only proves that blood is nothing more than a formality. Trudy advises April to adopt; like mother, like daughter, but the thirty-nine-year-old woman doesn't want to. The final rebuke by an insecure daughter, revenge. We hurt the ones we love, and then it's too late. Before April embarks on a new chapter in her life with Bernice(Bette Midler), she needs proof that Trudy(Lynn Cohen) loved her like a first born, too. This is the meat of "Then She Found Me", but a disproportionate amount of time is spent on her love mishaps, which would've been fine if the filmmaker had a flair for romantic comedy. She doesn't. Ben(Matthew Broderick) has comic possibilities, mostly gone unexplored, and Frank(Colin Firth) is just cranky, a bore. But "Then She Found Me" rallies itself to a satisfactory conclusion, as April discovers that her mother was right; DNA has nothing on love. The look on April's face says it all: like mother, like daughter. Expand

This film was much better than I was expecting. The theme of life being difficult and messy - but worth it - really showed through. And not least of all, Colin Firth looked wonderful.

This movie seriously sucked. How Sam M. or NH or Sandra D or Kris L gave it an 8 or 9 baffles me. I read a bunch of fairly positive reviews and just couldn't have been more disappointed in the film. I'm guessing Hunt is still coasting on her former cuteness and Oscar win --- otherwise why in the world would these reviewers cave in like they did? A weak plot, spotty directing (nothing fresh here) miscasting... Plus who would ever belive Colin Firth's character would fall for Hunt's character (or Firth for Hunt). Should have walked out. Expand

This was one of the worst films I've ever seen. Cliche after cliche. Constant Helen Hunt sour mouth pose. Stereotypical Jewish grandmother. Ridiculous sex scene in a car. Direction was all over the place.

This movie is a stinker. One of the worst movies I've seen. Awkward acting by the leads and impossible dialogue make it make for a frightful 100 minutes. Had Hunt had a director much of the amateur stuff could have been avoided. There is nothing in found me that good. The screen play especially grievous. Other professional reviewers have mum on just how bad this movie is. Shame on them !

Terrible all around, jumpy editing, stale acting, and Skeletor in the main acting role.

As far as I'm concerned, Helen Hunt makes every movie she's in worth watching. When it counts, the emotions are there, the characters are true to life, the personal anguish and triumphs resonate. Ms. Hunt: make more movies!

an unpleasant evening spent in the theater getting through this vanity project. Hunt says again and again and again that just one layer underneath, each of the characters is 100% autobiographical. I believe the whiny overwrought, put upon character she plays, deep wrinkles and all, absolutely is her. The rest who knows. Also, Hunt has lamented how long it took her to raise the money and how hard it was to get this off the ground over a ten year period and how hard it was to make the movie on a shoestring, didn't pay the other actors, etc....she made $1 million per episode the last year of her sitcom, made tens of millions for her movies post-Oscar, is dating the writer/executive producer of a tv series -- why didn't she stop her whining years ago and put up the money for this tiny budget movie herself or ask her baby daddy to chip in. Bizarre on every level and it shows in the film. Expand

My wife and I truly loved this little movie. We found it quirky, moving in places, and interesting throughout. I'm amazed at some of the people's comments about it.

The worst movie I have seen in years. It is boring, the story is flat, and overall, the movie has no drive. Watch only if you have absolutely nothing else to do.

I'd never again trust a critic who had anything good to say about this stinker.

Not an absolutely perfect movie, but I often found it funny, and, at the end, moving. It does play with cliches, but it also steps way beyond them. The plot is complicated, and the least realistic thing about the movie, but all the twists and turns all turn out to be necessary, to get where the movie is going. The acting is over all fine, and Bette Midler is great! If you want Helen Hunt to be cute, and her men to be immature in endearing ways, as opposed to fairly realistic ones, and everything to turn out just like it "should," this is not your movie. If you want to drop your judgments and prepare to be surprised -- try this movie. If you have ever been angry at God, and neither lost your faith nor pretended that anger away -- especially try this movie. Expand

Pretty interesting film, fine group of actors do a good job. Helen Hunt's direction is fine as well. Touching, funny and it held my interest.

  1. The new movie shrieks of motherhood - raising hot-button issues like biological clocks running down, the rights of birth mothers and whether to adopt or give artificial insemination a shot.

What ought to be a bittersweet movie about a woman's momentary unraveling feels like a workout class: Cardio melodrama.
  3. Some may dismiss Then She Found Me as a mere "women's film," but it's really a more honest and mature take on sex and the city.
