It's a perversely comic movie ride into the wild blue of crime and punishment.
  2. Moviegoers who can make it past "Denver's" excessive violence--no small thing--and get on this film's off-center wavelength will find a grave noir comedy heavy with romantic regret, a cocky piece of work that flaunts its style and attitude and dares you not to be impressed.

Tartly written and vividly performed by a fine ensemble cast, Gary Fleder's bracingly entertaining first feature covers familiar ground in a fresh, breezy way.

On balance, I think it's an interesting miss, but a movie you might enjoy if (a) you don't expect a masterpiece, and (b) you like the dialogue in Quentin Tarantino movies.

More of a pretender than a contender in a field that includes superior entries like "Reservoir Dogs" and "The Usual Suspects."
  7. Mr. Garcia gives one of his sleeker dreamboat performances.
  8. Alas, most of the surprise and the wit to be found here ends with the title.
  9. The movie features a very cool soundtrack and more hip lingo than two ears can absorb. But, like the air in Denver, this movie is spread awfully thin.

Largely vapid, borderline homophobic, and surprisingly treacly.

Its greatest achievement is that there isn't a single convincing scene in it.
  12. An overwrought gangster fable.
  13. Like a nincompoop version of "The Usual Suspects."
  14. Has that title going for it, which might annoy or provoke you. It makes me suspicious. It's the kind of flashy, meaningless title that's usually given to drab, pointless films.
  15. Things to do in the movie theater until you mercifully die of boredom sums up this witness' response to the ordeal of sitting through this movie.

Ought to be the subject of an obituary, not a review. A creepy film noir modeled on Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs," it was a stinking stiff on arrival.

  1. A highly under rated movie. Don't pay heed to the so called "professional reviewers" and just enjoy this one. If you read the reviews posted here at metacritic it sounds like the reviewers from the two San Francisco newpapers didn't actually watch the movie. Excellent writing, many of the expressions are "insider". Garcia is fantastic charmer in this one and Christopher Walken is as creepy as ever. The minor characters add much to the film; I'm refering to Steve Buscemi and Fairuza Balk. Fariuza Balk is outstanding even with her limited screen time. Great ensemble cast and fine character story development. Again, just watch and enjoy; this movie is highly under rated. Garcia and Walken fans will delight in this one. Full Review »
