Despite what most people say about this movie, I loved it! That's a rare thing considering I usually don't like any horror movies made recently. The thing that won me over was the overall creepiness of the ghosts. Ever time I watch the scene where The Jackal (who is by far my favorite ghost) is chasing Shannon Elizabeth down the hall I can't help but rewind it. Several Times :)

I gave it an overall nine because though the movie didn't have much death it was still a great movie. Matthew Lillard played an excellent psychic. I personally found the ghosts to be rather scary. I read some other reviews and on one site the reviewer first said it was almost exactly like House on Haunted Hill and then stated that there should have only been one ghost instead of 12 slightly mean ones. I rather briskly told him that if there were only one ghost he would have said that it was almost like some other movie. I loved this movie. I thought the plot was great and that all the actors did a great job. I just wish that the reviewers would have just watched the movie instead of looking for everything that could be construed as lame. Expand

If the sound track were eliminated from existence -- as it ought to be -- this movie would have several good moments, and a moderately interesting though cheesy look. One would still notice the awful direction and comically bad acting, but these flaws might be charming as in very old silent movies. Unfortunately, the sound track still exists, and it's very VERY LOUD. And it's unbelievably, horrifically bad. The music is inappropriate and awful. The dialogue is so stilted that the audience couldn't decide whether it was intentionally campy (my guess is the writers didn't intend it to be, but the actors -- handicapped as they were by an inability to act -- couldn't deliver it any other way). The simple but potentially servicable story is so badly botched that the screenwriters really ought to have their crayons taken away. In short, I don't recommend this film. Expand

We thought it was quite good. We reck they should have shown more of the torso coz we dint get to see it much, did we? Evan obviously wasn't paying attention, because the ghosts were explained, and it's pretty obvious, jus by looking at the ghosts, how they died, u moron!!!

I get a little sick of people who slam a movie in the hope of sounding like equally cynical and moronic movie critics. Why people keep expecting uber-scary films when a new horror flick is released is beyond me. Sure, the movie had a lot of typical horror movie moments [such as the son wandering off on his own into a dark basement] but you have to understand that movies like these aren39;t made to please some pompous fool with a thing against easy entertainment. They're made for people who can appreciate cheesy horror, special effects, and makeup and prosthetics and succeeds in this instance. I'd reccomend this movie if you enjoy horror movies [since when have horror movies not been clichéd and "campy" anyway?] and if you don't, you're not going to see it anyway are you? So don't go to see it just as an excuse to bitch about it. Expand

This movie is one of the greatest that I have ever seen. I don't care what anyone says, I still like it. I get a little sick of people who defend a lousy movie in the hope of sucking up to the equally cynical and moronic movie producers. Nobody goes to a movie like this expecting high art, but there's a big difference between great horror flicks like "Evil Dead," good ones like "Child's Play," and bad ones like 13 Ghosts. After reading what the critics thought and what viewers thought I thought I should add MY two cents. I'll agree with whomever said it...the critics obviously weren't paying attention. We as society take it for granted that movies will spell out every single detail for the lazy watchers to see. But what fun is that for the rest of us? Thirteen Ghosts, I think, is my favorite movie this year. I hate modern horror movies....mostly cuz they don't have the same spice as the ones I grew up with in the 80's. Thirteen Ghosts was an exception. I honestly didn't even WANT to see it, finding the previews to be utterly stupid. But, my mother made me watch it one evening and I became HOOKED. I've watched this movie over 30 times and every time learn a little something new. I specifically asked for it on DVD to check out special features, curious about the ghosts more than the main characters. I find it neat that every ghost had a life story written behind them. This can be seen on the DVD. However, movie-wise, I do wish a little more attention could have been paid to these ghosts. Face it, how many people looked at the Jackal and asked " HOW did that happen. WHAT is that cage doing on his head?" For my negative remark, it was awful that the ghosts flashed in and flashed out, glasses or no glasses....you only got a split second to look, so hours of make-up went to waste since most often you take a few seconds to try and figure out what flashed on the screen. It just seemed there was a lot unsaid....but I'm a bit obsessive in that wacky stuff. For the normal person, the movie was enough, I think. True, it wasn't scary, more like a " Wow, did you SEE that?!" kinda flick when a ghost appeared. Personally, I loved the movie. I found there is always somethig to look for. I'd suggest buying the DVD over the VHS, so you can see some of the hidden stories.....learn the ghosts' real names, how they died, why they look the way they look and so on, since the movie itself failed to share this. But, the effects, as far as the house is concerned are well done and the story makes sense. I'll also agree with whoever said that 13 ghosts of separate personalities makes it interesting. Lazy horror fans will think all 12 ghosts are evil. How many were actually ruthlessly EVIL? The Jackal {my personal favorite}, Hammer, Juggernaut, Torn Prince and Angry Princess seemed the most agressive. That's only 5 ghosts. Then you have Withered Lover, who wasn't evil AT ALL. Then there's First-Born Son who simply looked menacing but did nothing otherwise......Torso had no part in the movie WHATsoever so obviously was no threat to anyone or anything. Bound Woman wasn't exactly evil...but then again, you can only do so much when you're tied up. Pilgrimess is debateable as an evil ghost. Then there's Great Child and Dire Mother. Dire Mother, as a ghost herself, seemed like no threat whatsoever...she was just too mellow....more agressive, yet still frankly uninterested in being the agressER as far as the movie went is Great Child who seemed more protective over his mother rather than a ruthless sensless killer. I think with modern technology, it added spice to the movie, but then again, I've never seen the original either. Almost EVERY remake is slammed by critics...most of which probably grew up on the originals. For us younger viewers, this is our first time around, I personally find the newer ones more entertaining, since stone-age effects don't do anything for me. Then again, this is just my personal opinion....I like to look between the lines and contimplate hard on a movie that I enjoy. Thirteen Ghosts provides and even WANTS you to do just that....otherwise...why would there be a life story and explaination on every ghosts made? It's only a pity that we probably won't be seeing very much, if any, Thirteen Ghosts Merchandise. Expand

Not scary, then again, what movies are? The acting was rather poor, and there were more than a few plot holes. Not really holes in the basic evil machine requires certain souls, I liked that, felt really interesting. More, they were problems in how it was executed, why they were released one by one, why the uncle didn't control more to keep it from getting out of hand...The spells controlled the ghosts, they don't seem to be scary if you have a means to control them. I loved the design in the ghosts and the house. The little things, the odd symbols that resembled the ghosts, the glasses looked cool, although lacked any story on why they worked (should have had symbols on it, would have been perfectly acceptable). The ghetto black chick was annoying, could have been omitted entirely and would have been better. The ghosts didn't succeed to kill anyone important until the end, effectively making them look less scary than they should have been. The individual stories the ghosts get are interesting, and should have at least been summed up in a sentence to give something cool to it. The glass house was cool, not scary. Not freaky, it allowed you to see the ghosts, but since the characters only saw a ghost if it was in the same hallway or in its cell, that defeats that purpose. The glass house takes away the "this could happen to you" aspect that makes things freakier. The ratings this movie gets that are below 4 are completely useless. This movie didn't make anyone stand in line for a ticket, and it didn't get any rewards, but it was a decent movie and deserved to be acknowledged as decent. Over all the special effects were nice, (if not a bit overplayed on the sparks when a ghost hit anything) This movie was not scary, I thought it was entertaining, the acting is a bit overplayed, but the interest lies in the ghosts and the house. The acting isn't horrendous, it's not terrible, it's ok. The ghosts are all interesting looking, but not scary. The story has problems, but has good points too. Not a scary movie, it's rather entertaining. The people who say it's the worst movie they've ever seen have probably only seen maybe 6 of the best films ever made, in which case most other films fall short anyway...Also that black chick was annoying. This is a decent movie, not great, but worth watching in my opinion. Expand

The critics obviously didn't pay much attention to the movie, yes, Shannon's part was very... dull...because she wasn't well chosen. No offense, she's a great actress, just not in this movie. The nanny was a funny comical relief that was planned to bring humor and loosen tension. I thought it was a great role for Rah Digga to play. Matthew Lillard's part was the best through out the whole movie. He played the part very well and added a few things to the character that weren't there before. He is an acting genius. Tony Shalhoub's part of the father was a very good role. He added a lot emotional parts that really grab the audience. And the movie was an all together 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. It was well cast, besides Shannon's part, and well written. If the critics had paid more attention, they would have known what the ghosts were there for. I found myself very sucked in by the movie and it's twists. If they were just trying to get out the whole time, the audience would have been dulled. All of the ghosts served a role to make the plot seem...dramatic and interesting. If you just had 3 ghosts and made them very evil...it wouldn't have been as fun. You need a few "good" or "harmless" ghosts as well. The Great Child and the Dire mother were just characters that made it hard to find a way out. Let's say the ghosts just stood there and let them go by...that wouldn't be fun...so they had to have some minor meanies to create problems. See, to really understand the film, you must have an IQ higher than your age and you must come willing to notice details. The critics must have failed in both of those categories...and as a Matthew fan, I found his part very acceptable and noteable. Oh, and next time you see a movie, don't judge 'till you've rewatched it to make sure it was as bad as you claim. Expand

Ok the special effects were great but apart from the token comedy black character and the lame story (the concept was great but it got silly after a while) the actual facts are wildly inaccurate...for one no ghost can physically harm a human being, they can scare you and make you think they can (nightmares, visions etc) but they cannot do physical harm as shown in many movies including this one...this movie is just going to spawn a whole new generation of 'devil worshipping' goths with the newe arcana of the tarot made for this movie....i was sorely disappointed after all the hype. This movie was totally awesome!! critics only say that bad stuff cause they don't know whats really hot!! [Spoiler omitted] ... Matthew Lillard is the greatest actor, he played his role extremely well and i Luv all of his movies!! My fave ghost was definetly The Jackel because he was so scary that i had trouble watching the movie when he was there!! the costumes, plot and special FX were great and made the movie scary!! And Mathew Lillard gave the movie a comedic touch, he's so funny!! Expand

Shannon Elisabeth Droool..... was the only thing keeping me in my seat, the remake was worse than the original with those funky 3-D glasses!

A total mess. A movie that tries to funny with stupid ghost and fails miserably. Acting shouldn't be taken seriously and neither should the movie. Don't watch it will make you stupid.

The movie made no sense at all, but the premise wasn't completely retarded. It wasn't scary, but seeing the ghosts made it sort of entertaining. If taken seriously, this movie could have has something going for it.

This might be as perfect a new-millennium Halloween creepshow as we can expect.
  2. Tries to combine humor with ghostly horror but excels at neither.

The physical look of the picture is splendid. The screenplay is dead on arrival. The noise level is torture.
