What really grabs your attention about Undead, however, are the effects. For a movie budgeted under $1 million, the Spierigs have done an amazing job putting together believable visuals.
  2. This gory, ghoulishly funny horror goof is shameless fun in its own right.

Precociously inventive horror pic that combines brain-eating zombies with outer space aliens.
  4. 50
A campy, low-budget Romero homage that's badly in need of editing.
  5. 50
There's nothing under the goofball gags and gushing gore, and its welcome is worn out well before it's over.
  6. Initially artsy, then campy, then tense, it would have worked better if writer-directors Peter and Michael Spierig had kept everything serious and let the inherent absurdism of zombie attacks speak for itself without additional ironic comment.
  7. It gets duller and duller as it turns out to have used up all its amusing tricks in that first 30 minutes.
  8. The over-the-top tone gets stale awfully quickly -- especially once it becomes clear that it's all wacky style over any real attempt at substance.

As always, there's the combustible band of mismatched survivors.

Flesh-eating fish notwithstanding, Peter and Michael Spierig's low-budget schlock-horror parody brings precious little new to the undead genre.

In the end, the film is a stale, derivative mess that borrows heavily from every zombie and alien movie worthy of imitation, to only ho-hum effect.

The kind of movie that would be so bad it's good, except it's not bad enough to be good enough.

In Undead, sadly, rigor mortis has set in.
  14. Watching it is a smidgen like listening to the same monkey-walks-into-a-bar joke for the 105th time, but for the Spierig brothers, it is clearly a demonstration of fast-cheap capabilities and a one-way ticket straight out of Queensland.
  15. However visually striking, this Australian film is ultimately as tedious as it is derivative.
  16. The story is more undead than all of these revenant shufflers. And the orgy of gore and home-engineered special effects doesn't make up for the shortfall.
  17. If only they didn't cannibalize their source material so much, then take an extreme rule reversal just before the end credits, they might have achieved something original, rather than just a fan-fiction derivation of George A. Romero's canon.
  18. Gore fans will dig the makeup effects and some of the tongue-in-cheek slice-&-dice.
  19. At best a little boring and at worst stomach-churningly offensive.
  20. On the level of a no-budget student film in which the shots barely match up into sequences. It's about as much fun as watching blood dry.

All the quality of a crappy straight to DVD zombie film. The performances here are pitiful, and Felicity Mason has the stupidest look on her face throughout this entire thing. It tries to be a horror-comedy, but lacks any horror or comedy of any sort. I'm a zombie fanatic who obsesses over all things zombie related, so when I say a zombie movie is bad that means it's BAD. Avoid this movie like you would avoid getting bit by a zombie. Full Review »

I'm turning this movie off now after 45 minutes. If you want comedy and horror watch Evil Dead. This movie just doesn't have any focus and tries to be way too many things at once- and it does them all poorly. The only thing it adds to the genre is some misplaced Hong Kong Action Style/Gun play. Too bad, the gas mask/triple barrel shotgun really gave me high hopes. Full Review »
