Vampire is hardly a consequential film, nor does it suggest hitherto buried reserves of Murphy's talent. But it's a diverting mixture of horror, romance and comedy.
  2. Vampire in Brooklyn is neither funny nor frightening and comes up a tedious middle-road hybrid from veteran scaremeister Wes Craven, who directed.

Vampire in Brooklyn, a purported "comic tale of horror and seduction" that is neither funny nor frightening, just unpleasant.

Not even scaremeister director Wes Craven can awaken this story. Murphy's pale efforts are enough to make one fondly recall Blacula. Now that was one sucker who knew how to make a film that didn't. [27 Oct 1995, p.4D]

  1. Personally, I wouldn't put this movie into the horror category, because I didn't find it scary at all. The movie was surprisingly funny, though and I really enjoyed Eddie Murphy's performance. The story itself wasn't bad and those of you, who have read Bram Stoker's Dracula, will actually notice some slight similarities, just in a completely different setting. Ah, and some of the music used in this movie was really great. Expand

This movie was hilarious. Aside from all the swearing it was good.

I found this movie really funny. It's so cheezy that it's charming. This is perhaps the last movie I can remember Eddie Murphy being funny (aside from the Shrek movies.) Vampire in Brooklyn does not work as a horror at all. It tries to, but it doesn't. As a comedy on the other hand it really is fun, put a nice new perspective on an over done genre. Kind of in the spirit of Blacula, just better. Overall: Vampire in Brooklyn is a an enjoyable movie if you don't take it seriously and are willing to ignore the mountain of mistakes it makes, they are minor and if taken in good humor also easy to ignore. Just don't expect a horror from this movie. Expand
