Rotten Tomatoes gives this movie 52% in the "Top Critics." I liked this movie with certain reservations that are peculiar to me. Yonkers, Atlantic City, Vegas, and two-bit hustlers engender in me a despondency that I don't even experience watching a movie about Auschwitz, for example. However, this movie was saved by its freshness. This is one of the most original screenplays I have seen in a while. Palminteri attacked this role stridently. If nothing else he was believable in that character. Setting the mood with the emphasis on "the old" Vegas was a genuinely nice touch. No Bellagios thank you. All in all this movie had an internal consistency with everything falling into place like a complete set, en suite, much like a deck of cards for example. Expand

Lahti burns through a thinly written role with a surprising level of warmth and humanity.

Yonkers Joe is largely concerned with the delicate balance between a crook's business life and his personal life--a balance the movie itself has trouble managing effectively.
