David Simon

Biography: David Simon is an American journalist, author and television writer and producer. He attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and the University of Maryland writing for the newspaper of both institutions. Upon graduating from college with a degree in general studies he embarked upon a career in journalism, writing for The Baltimore Sun metro desk. He paused in 1987 to observe the activity of the Baltimore Homicide Unit for a year and his research was the basis for his first book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. The book inspired the Emmy-winning television series Homicide: Life on the Street which gave Simon his first work in television - initially as a writer and later as a producer. He wrote a second book entitled The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood after observing one of Baltimore's open air drug markets for over a year. The book was adapted by Simon into the Emmy-award winning HBO mini-series The Corner. Simon next created an original series, The Wire, for HBO and served as the shows executive producer, head writer and show runner throughout its run.
