Dwight Yoakam

Biography: Dwight Yoakam was born on October 23, 1956, in Pikeville, Kentucky, though he was raised in Columbus, Ohio. He became interested in music and acting while he was in high school. He sang, played guitar, and was often awarded the lead role in school plays. After dropping out of Ohio State University in the 1970s, Yoakam moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music. His style of honky-tonk music was not accepted in Nashville, so he moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s to market himself there. He made his professional debut as an artist in 1986 with the release of his first album titled "Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc." He went on to record over ten more albums. Dwight Yoakam won the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1993 for his work on the song "Ain't that Lonely Yet." Also in 1993, he was named Artist of the Year by CMT Europe. Yoakam began acting professionally in movies in the early '90s with memorable roles in Sling Blade, Four Christmases, and Wedding Crashers. His performance of Doyle Hargraves in Sling Blade earned him a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which he shared with the rest of the cast.
