Hugh Downs

Biography: Hugh Downs began his career as a radio announcer after University. He served in the U.S. Army and upon his return he was the radio announcer for NBC WMAQ in Chicago. Hugh Downs became a TV announcer for the soap opera Hawkins Falls in 1950 and also was the announcer for the children's program Kukla, Fran and Ollie. In 1954 Hugh Downs relocated from Chicago to New York as announcer for Arlene Francis' series The Home Show where he was until the show ended in 1957. In 1958 affable Hugh Downs finally got the role of host for the game show Concentration for nine years. For the 1975-76 season he was co-host with Barbara Walters on the program For Women Only. Hugh Downs hosted a PBS program called Over Easy from 1977 to 1983 which dealt with life after 40. Hugh is perhaps best remembered for his co-anchor duties with Barbara Walters on Primetimes, 20/20 from 1978 until his retirement in 1999.
