John Standing

Biography: John Standing is an English stage and screen actor. He was born in London on August 16, 1934, the son of Kay Hammond, an actress, and Sir Ronald George Leon, a stockbroker. Standing was educated at Eton, Millfield School, and after serving in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, at the Byam Shaw School of the Arts. His career began on stage, appearing in productions of Titus Andronicus (starring Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh), Ring Around the Moon, Private Lives, and many more. His film debut was in The Wild and the Willing (1962), and he went on to appear in King Rat (1965), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), The Elephant Man (1980), and A Good Woman (2004). Standing's first major television role was as Sidney Godolphin in the BBC serial, The First Churchills (1969). Other TV appearances included Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, LA Law, Murder She Wrote, and the ITV sitcom The Other 'Arf, which ran for four years. Standing succeeded his father as the 4th baronet in 1964, but chooses not to use the title.
