Though she played the female lead of the feminist who advertises for a co-driver to Munich in Loose Connections (d. Richard Eyre, 1983), Lindsay Duncan was never quite a film star. Born in Edinburgh on 7 November 1950 and Central School-trained, she has, however, become one of the most interesting character actresses in contemporary British cinema, as indicated by her performances as an unusually youthful Lady Markby in An Ideal Husband (UK/US, d. Oliver Parker, 1999) and, vividly, in the dual role of Lady Bertram, drugged out of her mind, and her careworn sister in Mansfield Park (UK/US, d. Patricia Rozema, 2000).
In such diverse TV series as GBH (Channel 4, 1991, BAFTA-nominated) and Oliver Twist (US, d. Renny Rye, 1999, as Oliver's vindictive stepmother) and on stage in the Pinter double, Celebration/The Room (2000), she rounded off a remarkable mid-life flowering in her career in all the acting media. She also provided the voice for TC-14 in Star Wars - The Phantom Menace (US, d. George Lucas, 1999). She married actor Hilton McRae.
