A solid and funny comedy with “Bookie.” It’s not a sure thing, but it’s a 7-point favorite to endure.
Written by Lorre and Nick Bakay, Bookie occasionally tries too hard; it’s usually not a great idea to have characters laugh at each other’s jokes. But it’s generally quite comfortable in its own skin.
Maniscalco pushes his way through some awful writing in the premiere of “Bookie,” a half-hour of television that can be downright archaic in its sense of humor when it's not just lazy.
