This is an origin story, and like "Saturday Night Live" sketches blown up to big-screen size ("The Blues Brothers," "Wayne's World," "Superstar," et al.), it faces the challenge of shaping a funny idea into a semblance of life, and succeeds.
Despite the more cartoonish elements, there are real consequences for actions in Haters, and rightly so. Still, while the discord is earned, the tonal shifts don’t always jibe. It’s not enough of a deviation to throw Haters Back Off! off the rails, though, so there’s no need to heed the warning when partaking of this new comedy.

This seems to be quite a polarizing show. People either love it or hate it. I really love it, one of the funniest shows I've seen for years. It's quite surreal and off-beat so if you're expecting a generic US sitcom with conventional 'gags' this probably isn't for you. I really like the details in this show like the cluttered home, weird decor and slightly strange church and pastor and besotted ice cream boy.
You're not meant to root for Miranda or even like her. She's meant to be somewhat grotesque, it's her sister Emily who is the sympathetic character
I think a lot of people don't seem to understand comedy and dismiss anything that doesn't make them laugh. Humor is subjective but comedy isn't and this is a well acted and well written show that dares to be a bit different and that should be celebrated.

I found the YouTube series to be rather meh… but Netflix and Ballinger collaborated to do something awesome with Miranda Sings in this series. They placed her in the real world where her attitude and actions have real consequences and portrayed her as a homeschooled mentally ill girl that is shielded from society by her family (also mentally ill) because of how the world would see her and treat her.
The show has an almost Peewee Herman level slapstick silly feel at first, but then it gets deep and dark. It throws constant weirdness, innuendo, and situational comedy at you that makes you laugh… then it reminds you that it’s all supposed to be real by presenting harsh consequences that make you feel bad for laughing… because what you’re really laughing at is the tragedy of a family plagued with mental illness spiraling downward into a hole. I love it! I can’t get enough of it! I can’t wait until next season!

SEASON 1
Miranda sings badly with great gusto; she is witheringly sarcastic to people even though we know she has misunderstood what they’ve said. It’s a very impressive, thought-through presentation by Ballinger. I admire it, but I also didn’t find it funny.
YouTube is a fascinating medium because of how intimate it can be; the viewer is brought right into the star’s bedroom to share in flights of fancy or upfront confessional. “Haters Back Off!” offers traces of that fascinating landscape, including moments where Miranda’s kooky, sullen frustration is completely understandable. But the show is too caught up in the foreground of attempting to be brutally funny with material that was fresh 12 years ago.
The episodes sometimes veer into contempt for the characters. There’s a deeper pathos to Miranda’s situation, but the season doesn’t delve deeply into that until late, by which time haters will have long since backed off.
The series seems to want to exist somewhere between a Pee-wee Herman world, where Miranda exists within her own reality, and “Waiting for Guffman” or other parodies of self-important clueless people. It doesn’t succeed as either, nor on its own terms.
None of the characters deepen as the show goes on. They're shallow vessels freighted down by contrived plot complications that include everything from unrequited love to kidney disease. And there's more than a bit of that vainglorious YouTubers' entitlement in where Haters ultimately ends up, the satire finally curdling into smugness.
I never heard of the youtube channel Miranda Sings until I read reviews of this series, and having been neither able to make it through the pilot nor through any of the several videos I checked out, I can say this series isn't for me. But the lead does have some talent playing a no-talent - the opening song in the pilot is cleverly bad - so I can see where this might really appeal to some people.

A one note joke, that falls flat when extended, excruciatingly, over eight episodes. It works on youtube, sort of, when you don't know the shtick, but even then it's the same thing iterated endlessly.
The characters never really find their footing or develop any discernible depth, and it becomes more of an exercise in cringe-endurance.

This is the most disturbing thing I've ever seen on a TV show. This isn't funny. It's tragic. You have a young delusional woman in need of a major course correction in an environment where her uncle is a spaz and her mother is a weak push-over. They both contribute to the problem. The main character has zero dimension or character arc; she is just a weak stick figure from one show to the next that you can't really do anything with. Who the frig had money and thought this was a good idea!? Even the 'Cone heads' barely had enough to put a movie together with and this is a fraction of the potential of that! As a comical satire, it's too over-the-top. On YouTube, a few minutes here or there is fine but it doesn't translate well to TV.
