Good parenting is noble, selfless, wonderful work. It’s just not all that compelling to watch it practiced by strangers.

Everything on the show feels outlined, if not scripted.

The first episode is just too relentlessly clunky and stupid.

Maybe some day someone will give some stay-at-home dads some respect. This show isn’t it.

What's missing from the show are the very things that make so many reality shows intolerable and, sadly, make them hits as well. No one's nuts, no one is a raging alcoholic or a jealous maniac, the dads don't get into fistfights, and the only misbehaving you'll see on the show can be fixed with a simple diaper change.

Scripted? No doubt. Do the men seem to go out of their way to discuss sex, bowel movements and other "provocative" topics? They do indeed. But they also treat their children with love and respect.

These guys are so bland and their together time so contrived, it's more fun to watch the gears turn on the tired docusoap machine.

Modern Dads has an opportunity to enlighten. Now, in a half-hour format, the show barely flips a switch.

The four guys at the center of the show, in addition to actually being friends before the cameras came around, are portrayed as caring, involved dads, albeit with a few sitcommy quirks.... But thinking the dads on Modern Dads are somehow unique is really not capturing the whole picture.

I am admittedly biased in favor of this show because I have been a "stay at home dad" for two years. I am thrilled to see this under represented group portrayed with so much humor. The editors do a great job to show the "real" in reality show genre. They slip in subtle observations made by the main characters that are so accurate. They also make it clear that the dads are grateful for the chance to provide excellent care for their kids. Full Review »
