Winfrey and ABC have taken the much-maligned reality TV format and used it to create a show that both entertains and encourages viewers to think about such matters as how best to help others.

A heartfelt, inspiring, uplifting TV show that brings out the best in people? Who could possibly resist that?

In all, Oprah's Big Give is a triumph of virtue, which leaves only the question of who would want to watch it.
  4. I'm ashamed that a wounded Marine, about to be discharged after 15 years in the service, needs help from an entertainment show to find and afford civilian housing for himself and his family.
  5. People victimized by terrible events and circumstances often feel pride and dignity are two of the few things they have left. There are times in Oprah's Big Give when it feels like those things may be slipping away, in the service of creating a splashier television show.

Oprah’s Big Give stands out as a weird, misbegotten creature that perhaps shouldn’t have been taken out in public.

Oprah's Big Give is no mere appallingly bad television show but a refutation of human decency itself.

But honestly I'm a lot less offended by this than that lie detector show. Or whatever new Big Brother gimmick I always spend the season wincing at when I see the commercials come on. Oprah has her audience and is feeding them the crap the like. Is it a bit weird to judge charitable giving? Sure. They probably should have just made it a charity show without being a contest. But it's really not that bad. Expand

A hew high in crass; maybe Oprah can start a church where the faithful compete for salvation...while the rich get richer.

So...I give this show 10 out of 10 for helping people who need help, and I subtract a bajillion points for the show's caricatures of humanity and the American-Idol format of exploiting mistakes which were made in the name of goodness. The second episode: I hope to learn online that this was the second of a short-lived season of a show more disgusting than the violence of 'Hostel' and the sex of hardcore porn. If you continue to watch it, don't worry--there's bound to be an episode later in the season under the title of "How to Cut Yourself Effectively." (Want to do something good for someone? You'll figure it out a way which is important...and do not ever watch this show.) Expand
