The series' grim tone and overall look of a grimy world in perpetual need of dusting or wiping is a long way from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and closer to Japanese movies like The Grudge. [12 Sep 2005, p.45]

There isn't much in "Supernatural" to engage viewers older than Sam and Dean, but it's certainly not the worst of the new troop of spookers.
  3. Leaden, predictable and, at times, unintentionally funny.

This is the show I look forward to the most every week. If you've stayed away because you've seen stills of the leads and have figured it's just another CW "Cute Boy Show" you were wrong. Supernatural is one of the most consistently well-written, acted, and directed shows on television. The effects are awesome, the scares are effective, the humour is INTENTIONAL, and the relationship between Sam and Dean is some of the most honest and real work that I've ever seen in any medium, television or otherwise. If you never gave Supernatural a chance now is the time. Supposedly the creator plans to end it at the end of his "Five Year Plan". Expand

Just one more "me-too" show to ride on the post-"the eye" mistery series. The biggest minus for this show I think is the leading actors. They are so emotionally flat that I could't tell if a big bad moster is about to crunch them or they are having the party of their life in a noisy club. Expand

"Supernatural" is "Charmed" with a Y chromosome: both concern attractive squabbling siblings who inherit an occult mission from dead relatives. The brothers face a slightly more interesting range of adversaries than the sisters' cookie-cutter demons, but the essential Manichaeism is the same, as is the notion that, in vanquishing evil, you need both a powerful spell and a powerful right hook. I do see the appeal in watching attractive young people avert the apocalypse with remnants of high school Latin and a round of black eyes, but that appeal fades fast without fresh, challenging stories.
