As someone who isn't a fan of anime, mechas, or high-school dramas, I found the show groundbreaking, and superbly executed in every way. The attention to details, both subtle, and exaggerated, is seen everywhere, and the mix between humorous and serious moments is done at a balanced pacing, never stretching itself too much in either direction. The gradual character and plot building is masterfully done, with a surprisingly mature tone.
Without giving away too much, the way he plays the various factions into conflict in the later episodes is especially impressive, and went beyond my expectations.
