Not quite as smart as the recent Wolf Hall or as deliciously decadent as the bygone The Tudors, Versailles fails to live up to its regal potential. [30 Sep 2016, p.54]
The sprawling story is definitely more concerned with soapy plots than the realities of court and the battle for power between the Protestant and Roman Catholic Church, a la Wolf Hall, but like Versailles itself the results are charmingly ostentatious.

Normal every day person here. I really like this show, intrigue, fancy clothes, sex, power. It's not historically accurate but if I wanted that I would watch the History Channel. It's a lot of fun and I really enjoy it.

SEASON 1
I am a Francophile. I waited patiently for this show to premiere on American TV. It's ridiculous that the show is entirely in English, and some of the French pronunciation is poor, but overall the show is a treat to watch. If you liked the episodes of the second season of Outlander that took place in France, or if you like movies that take place at Versailles, this show is for you.

It is frequently lovely to behold. The real Versailles is of course gorgeous, and the series renders the palace through expensive sets and substantial on-location filming. But like the plot, the prettiness is a little superficial; this is more the CW’s “Reign” than Starz’s “Outlander.”
Versailles has glamor and spectacle, but it’s hardly an epic drama. It dreamily drifts along for the first few episodes, introducing the characters and concentrating on outrageous behavior. All the military-strategy sessions blur together.
The first four episodes of the series are rather talky, although heaven knows there are moments of eye-opening action of the carnal variety. ... But the talk, at least, is revealing and sophisticated, not to mention often filled with intrigue.
The series looks astoundingly cheap. ... The anachronistic electronic score by Eduardo Noya Schreus, aka NOIA, gives a galvanizing jolt to what is otherwise an irritatingly unoriginal production.
No sé mucho sobre el periodo, por lo que no puedo hablar del rigor histórico. Como serie me encanta. Su fotografía, vestuario, guión, trama, ambientación, cómo va convirtiendo la corte en Versalles en lo que nos ha llegado hasta nuestros días: cada aspecto de la vida del Rey como una celebración, como un espectáculo en la que los nobles se pelean por obtener el favor del Rey y sus maquinaciones para quitar de en medio a sus familiares para heredar títulos y riqueza. Muy recomendable.
Quizá abusa de algunos planos en cuanto a desnudos integrales femeninos. No es por ser puritano, pero no tienen sentido alguno. Y a veces parece que se recrean.

SEASON 1
Admirably staged and acted, this sumptuous production is sabotaged by its script. Historical inaccuracy abounds and renders the enterprise far less compelling than it should be. The tale of Louis XIV and his court is actually quite fascinating; a better script would make Versailles a grand experience for television viewers, including those who know little, and much, of the history.

Right from episode 1, it's clear that the producers and writings are trying to use sex to sell this show. There was a bed scene within the first two minutes. LOUSY way to start a show, if you ask me. Then that part where the broad was **** on the guy's finger, then there's two dudes in the sack doing the hanky-panky. Like, come on guys!! Let's get with the show. I didn't turn this on to watch a frickin' porno! Like at least Game Of Thrones was a porno with some action! I was hoping for just a little bit of action, but that didn't happen either. All the character's voices and dialogue are on the same low, quiet, melodramatic tone. BORING! But I'm not going to give Versailles a ZERO - instead I'll give it a very generous 3 for it's lavish set designs and for organically curing my insomnia. All the drugs that my string of therapists have prescribed for me haven't been able to put me to sleep the way THIS monstrosity has had the power to do!

Look guys, I couldn't get past the first episode and i WANTED to like this. I loved the concept and the period setting, however the writing is all about gratuitous str and **** sex. And there's just problems of situational plausibility all over. One of the most egregious is when the king decides to ride the grounds on his own and no less than 20 of his attendants are like "where's the king?!" Seriously?! No less than three personal attendants would know of his whereabouts at all times not to mention his own personal guardian force. With such lazy writing and story architecture it was clear that this is a poor choice for my time and attention, at least.

SEASON 1
Versailles, a French TV show, was written and filmed in English in order to appeal to a global audience. Swing and a miss. However, the use of English is not the issue here. Fundamentally, the story of the Sun King is rich and worthy of a high-production value TV Series. Considering the recent success and popularity of the fantasy and political genres, with shows such as Game of Thrones and House of Cards receiving both popular and critical acclaim, it is no wonder Versailles came into being. However, the depth of political and historical intrigue in Louis XIV is lost in this production. Versailles is at best mildly interesting for it's lavish sets and costumes. At worst it is a melodramatic soap-opera posing as relevant televised narrative of the life of one of the most consequential rulers of early modernity. Instead of an intense political drama of a determined ruler trying to consolidate power and cement his legacy we are given something that better resembles Cinemax attempting to adapt a Jane Austen novel.
