Kate Beckinsale (a late replacement for Isla Fisher) stars in a darkly comedic Funny or Die-produced series as a discredited journalist who hopes to revive her career by uncovering evidence that a young mother (Jules Latimer) now serving a life sentence for murder was wrongfully convicted. But she may be in over her head. (Well, it's a comedy, so she's definitely in over her head.) The 10-episode series comes from Dead to Me writer Rebecca Addelman. Two episodes stream today, followed by weekly installments.

That's right: It's a version of The Tonight Show not only for kids, but also hosted by them. (After all, they do say the darndest things.) Bergman Island MOVIE Trailer Drama ($) Rent
Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest (which follows the critically acclaimed Things to Come and Eden, and her unreleased-in-the-U.S. Maya) was picked up by IFC this summer at Cannes, where the drama received mostly positive reviews from critics. Also opening in theaters today, Bergman Island offers a very personal portrait of a filmmaking couple (played by Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth) whose relationship dissolves while working on Fårö, Ingmar Bergman’s residence and inspiration for many of his films. The film has an additional meta aspect that involves Mia Wasikowska playing a filmmaker (yet another stand-in for Hansen-Løve) as well.

Day of the Dead NEW Trailer Drama/Horror Syfy, 10p
TV is lousy with zombie shows, but this Syfy original aims to copy not from them but from George A. Romero's 1985 movie. Both remake and homage, the 10-episode series finds a group of strangers battling to survive the first 24 hours of a zombie invasion. The adaptation comes from Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, whose previous credits came mainly from Disney Channel and MTV shows.

Critics had nothing but great things to say about the doc when it debuted at Cannes in July.

Can director Denis Villeneuve succeed where David Lynch could not? The director of Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival returns with his big-budget, highly-anticipated, and long-delayed (by covid) adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic, which Lynch previously tried to wrestle into a feature film in 1984 to less than spectacular (though not uninteresting) results. Timothée Chalamet takes over the role of Paul Atreides originated by Kyle MacLachlan, while Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa and Stellan Skarsgård also star. The long-delayed film will stream on HBO Max for one month beginning tonight (when it also opens in theaters), and a spinoff TV series called Dune: The Sisterhood will arrive on the same streaming service in the near future.

Not a very large sequel to The 100 but a remake of The 4400 (which aired on the USA Network from 2004-07), this 4400 was finally ordered to series this year after languishing in development since 2018. Guided by producers Ariana Jackson (Riverdale) and Anna Fricke (Walker, Texas Ranger), the remake starts from a similar premise: 4,400 people who had disappeared without a trace over the past century suddenly reappear without having aged and without any memories of what happened to them in the interim.

Star Trek: Prodigy NEW Trailer Animation/Family/Sci-fi Paramount+
Originally ordered as a Nickelodeon series—and the cable network will still air it, but at a later date after its streaming debut—Prodigy is the third animated Star Trek series but the first intended exclusively for younger audiences. But that doesn't mean there's nothing of interest for longtime Star Trek fans. That group might be delighted by the return of Kate Mulgrew as Voyager's Captain Janeway. Or, rather, as an emergency hologram version of Janeway on a derelict Federation ship that is stolen by a group of teen aliens who then take it to explore the universe, as teen aliens often do. (They are voiced by Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, and Breet Gray, among others, while recurring guests include Jameela Jamil, Jason Alexander, Daveed Diggs, and Robert Beltran, the latter reprising his Voyager role of Chakotay.) Today's premiere runs one hour, while subesequent episodes (arriving weekly) will be 30 minutes.

Documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson, who previously tackled topics ranging from the Black Panthers to Jonestown, turns his attention to the largest prison uprising in American history: a 1971 revolt at New York's Attica Correctional Facility that spanned five days and ultimately left 43 people dead after a violent police response. (Yes, that's what Al Pacino is shouting about in Dog Day Afternoon.) But why did the uprising start in the first place? Nelson traces the myriad reasons and, forgoing a narrator, uses the voices of those involved on all sides and archival footage from prison cameras to show the shocking events as they happened. The result received excellent reviews upon its Toronto festival debut in September.

Famed serial killer lumberjack Dexter Morgan is back in a 10-episode revival of the Showtime drama series Dexter that concluded its original eight-season run in 2013. The new episodes are set a decade after the events of the much-criticized finale and on the opposite side of the country in the fictional upstate New York town of Iron Lake, where Michael C. Hall's title character is posing as a local shopkeeper (and, conveniently, dating the town's police chief, played by Julia Jones). Other new faces include Clancy Brown, Alano Miller, and Jamie Chung, while Dexter vet Jennifer Carpenter will again be a series regular despite the minor detail that her character happens to be dead. (Also back from the dead: John Lithgow's Trinity Killer.) Also returning is showrunner Clyde Phillips, who guided Dexter's first four (and, arguably, best) seasons.

Already one of the better movies of 2021 thanks to excellent reviews out of Sundance, this directorial debut from actress Rebecca Hall is an adaptation of Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel. Filmed in black and white, the drama stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga as high school friends who happen to meet up on a hot day in 1920s New York City and explores how, even though both can “pass” as white, only one of them chooses to do so. Cowboy Bebop NEW Drama/Sci-fi Netflix
Delayed a year not (necessarily) due to the pandemic but because of an on-set injury to its star, Netflix's live-action series adaptation of Cowboy Bebop finally makes its 10-episode debut. The original Cowboy Bebop was a Japanese-produced, jazz-inspired anime series from the late 1990s that later earned an American fanbase through airings on Adult Swim. This remake similarly attempts to blend science fiction and noir tropes as it depicts the adventures of a group of bounty hunters operating throughout the solar system. Some of those bounty hunters are played by John Cho (as Spike Spiegel), Mustafa Shakir (as Jet Black), and Daniella Pineda (as Faye Valentine), while Alex Hassell plays Vicious, part of the evil Syndicate. Yes, that jazzy soundtrack will return: Yoko Kanno, who scored the anime series, is back to put the bebop in the new series as well.

King Richard MOVIE Trailer Drama/Sports HBO Max
The latest Warner Bros. theatrical release to head to HBO Max on day one is theoretically a biopic about tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams. But, as you may have guessed from the title, the focus of the film is actually on their father/coach Richard Williams, played by Will Smith, since that is apparently more marketable. Still, the Williams sisters are producers on the film, and a November release date suggests that WB has some hope of positioning Richard for awards. Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and Dylan McDermott also star for director Reinaldo Marcus Green (Joe Bell).

The film, which features a screenplay by Dear Even Hansen Tony winner Steven Levenson, will also open in theaters on November 12.
The Wheel of Time NEW Trailer Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
In its quest for its own Game of Thrones, Amazon isn't putting all of its (dragon) eggs in one basket. In addition to next year's Lord of the Rings series, another epic fantasy novel adaptation is headed to Prime Video this fall. Amazon has already committed to at least two seasons of The Wheel of Time, which adapts the best-selling book series by Robert Jordan (and, after his death, Brandon Sanderson) that spans 14 individual novels plus a prequel. There have been several prior attempts to bring the books to both TV and the big screen, but the massive scope of the series made those projects ultimately untenable. Amazon's version stars Rosamund Pike and comes from former Survivor contestant (and writer on Agents of SHIELD and Chuck) Rafe Judkins and like the books is set in a world where magic exists but only a select group of women are allowed to use it. (If you are keeping score at home, that makes two shows this year created by Survivor contestants—and the other one was pretty great.) The first three episodes stream today, followed by five additional weekly installments on Fridays. Season 2 has already begun filming (albeit with a different actor, Donal Finn rather than Barney Harris, playing Mat Cauthon), and Judkins has a total of eight seasons planned out if Amazon agrees to move forward.

Hawkeye NEW Trailer Drama Disney+
What if ... Disney+ went several months without a new live-action Marvel series? No need to think about such a dire scenario any longer; the next one is here. Hawkeye finds Jeremy Renner reprising the title role (which he has played in half a dozen Marvel films) of Clint Barton. But he's not the only one: Joining the MCU is Hailee Steinfeld as a young fan who trains with Barton to become the next Hawkeye. The series comes from Jonathan Igla, who is new to the MCU but has written and produced for shows ranging from Mad Men to Bridgerton, and the cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Linda Cardellini, and newcomer Alaqua Cox, whose character (Maya Lopez/Echo) is being considered for a spinoff. Two episodes stream today, followed by single episodes on each of the following four Wednesdays.
The Humans MOVIE Trailer Drama/Horror Showtime tbd
The rare film to get a simultaneous theatrical and Showtime release, The Humans is also the rare holiday movie to center on Thanksgiving rather than Christmas, though heartwarming, it's not. Playwright Stephen Karam makes his film directorial debut with an adaptation of his own Tony-winning one-act play (which was also a Pulitzer finalist) about three generations of a family that gather for Thanksgiving at a run-down Manhattan apartment. The dialogue-heavy film takes a dark turn as the day progresses—so much so that in some places The Humans is listed as a horror film. (But it's not entirely grim; some places also list it as a comedy.) Even when they couldn't pinpoint its genre, many critics enthusiastically praised Humans when it debuted at TIFF in September. Jayne Houdyshell reprises her Tony-winning role from the play and is joined in the film by the excellent cast of Richard Jenkins, Steven Yeun, June Squibb, Beanie Feldstein, and Amy Schumer.

The Beatles: Get Back MINISERIES Sneak peek Trailer Documentary/Music Disney+
Director Peter Jackson's highly anticipated Beatles documentary, originally expected to debut in theaters over the summer, is now a Disney+ miniseries. Unlike other recent theatrical-to-streaming moves, this one wasn't triggered by fears over audience sizes but rather a wealth of material—so much that the one-time feature film is now a three-part, six-hour event. (Jackson can't resist a trilogy.) Borrowing techniques he used for his WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, the Lord of the Rings director has spent the better part of the past three years editing and restoring footage from over 60 hours of film shot by Michael Lindsay-Hogg during 1969 as the Beatles wrote and rehearsed 14 new songs that would eventually end up on the band's final albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be. (Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 film Let It Be also used a much smaller portion of the same footage.) A highlight of Jackson's miniseries is sure to be the Beatles' legendary final concert performed from the rooftop of their London headquarters, which will be shown in its entirety for the first time in history, but the expanded footage also allows the director to show how relations between the four band members at the time were not as acrimonius as widely believed. Only the first part of the series streams today; parts two and three will follow on Friday and Saturday.

The Tragedy of Macbeth MOVIE Trailer Drama Apple TV+
Working without his brother Ethan for the first time, Joel Coen directs a noir-ish, black-and-white take on Shakespeare's Macbeth starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as an older-than-normal Lord and Lady Macbeth. (The age change is intended to give the characters greater urgency in their actions, and the altered title of the film is also intended to reflect this new take.) Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram, Brendan Gleeson, and Harry Melling also star. The film, which received excellent reviews out of its NY Film Festival debut in September, will also receive a limited theatrical run (mainly to qualify for awards) beginning on Christmas Day.

untitled but insanely expensive Lord of the Rings series NEW Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
What will likely be the most expensive TV series of all time—with a budget reportedly twice that for the entire LOTR film trilogy, though it does come with free two-day shipping—finally makes its debut after years of production. Filmed in New Zealand like Peter Jackson's movies, the series is not directly adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's books but instead depicts a brand new story set in the same world (but taking place in the "Second Age," several millennia prior to the events of The Hobbit.) J.A. Bayona directs the first two episodes, while the remaining S1 episodes come from Wayne Che Yip and Charlotte Brandstrom. Those episodes will stream weekly rather than all at once, and a second season has already been ordered.
