As a remake, it solidifies the source material as timeless and iconic in ways that still feel relevant. Especially now, when it's wrapped up in one of the most visually stunning and immersive science fiction releases we’ve seen.

There are a lot of other things worth unpacking about this game (pour one out for Rob as I pitch a thousand Dead Space features), but as a cohesive whole? Dead Space Remake is damn good fun, with interesting ideas and appreciation of the greater franchise that most remakes lack. This isn’t some studio trying to massively reinvent an IP, but working to fit the best pieces together so it can grow anew. It's a fitting tribute to Visceral's best days - maybe not a perfect rendition, but few cover songs ever are.

Although almost all of Dead Space Remake's core features are from 14 years ago, the experience as a whole has not aged and is a true masterpiece. Not only does it manage to give players a near-perfect space survival horror experience, but the concept of the game design is also a classic.

It can’t be overstated just how much a Dead Space remake always seemed like a sure thing, and after my time with it, that perspective hasn’t changed. It’s easily one of the best modern horror games, and the fresh lick of paint to really bring its grimy, snarling interpretation of sci-fi horror into sharp new relief is very welcome, especially when it maintains such faith in the source material.

The Dead Space remake fixes a lot of the 2008 original's problems, but leaves a couple of big ones right where they were.

This Dead Space remake was done exactly how any remake should be. It was brought to life in a new engine with updated mechanics while staying true to the source material, and it looks beautiful when you play it. The combat, the exploration, the side quests, everything was meticulously put together in this remake to make it better than the original. It makes you wonder how long it will take for Dead Space 2 and 3 to be remade.

It's impossible to expect the Dead Space remake to be as transformative as something like the Resident Evil 2 remake was. The generational leap isn't as grand and so much about it feels inherently familiar to the 2008 original, such is the way EA Motive has weaved its changes into the Dead Space mold. The new side quests might leave a lot to be desired, but every other addition contributes to a remake that stays true to its progenitor while also improving upon it in a number of ways. Newcomers and hardcore Dead Space fans will get the most out of the experience, but this is now the quintessential way to play one of the survival horror genre's best.

A modern remake of a classic that delights fans and newcomers alike with impressive graphics and first-class sound design.

Fortunately, Dead Space does provide the player with one way to ratchet up the intensity. If combat doesn't scare you, then you can always turn on the Impossible difficulty setting where if you die once then it's game over (the remake has helpfully added the option to continue playing at reduced difficulty, the original would just delete your save entirely). I would highly recommend checking out the Impossible difficulty, even if you're not the sort that generally goes in for challenge runs, if only because it gives the game a sense of urgency and tension that it otherwise lacks.

Dead Space is a superb remake and undoubtedly the definitive way to experience one of the best survival horror shooters that Capcom never made.

Dead Space (2023) deserves to be a sample of what we call a good remake. While inheriting the merits of the original work, it managed to completely improve the shortcomings like frustrating control and weapon balances. As a title that will be the cornerstone of the series' reboot, the game successfully made us look forward to the future.

Dead Space is a shot-for-shot recreation of the original that manages to recapture the 2008 game as you want to remember it — meaning it’s actually better than ever.

Whether you're indoctrinated or a neophyte, there's a place for you in this blood vessel that looks like a ghost train, because yes, Dead Space is scarier than ever.

Even if we are still a bit hungry and we were hoping for more novelties to stretch the story or simply more content and side missions, too few and quickly solved, Dead Space Remake remains a success overall. The total immersion provided from the beginning to the end thanks to the suppression of pauses and loadings, as well as the captivating atmosphere of the different areas of the Ishimura. We are in turn amazed, then terrified, but never bored, all the while crushing necromorphs in spades. A 2023 version of a respected and greatly improved classic, which will please those who played the original and surely even more the neophytes, who will discover this classic in this spectacular form, making it one of the best survival-horror of this generation.

Dead Space is an excellent, visually stunning remake that vastly improves the original game. The PC of course is heavy and it requires a really powerful hardware in order to run at its best, but there are plenty of options that will allow you to get the best compromise when it comes to detail and performance.

Dead Space (2023) takes the original’s stellar experience into the modern age with excellent atmosphere, additional narrative content, level-design tweaks, and a few surprises to keep the flayed flesh fresh.

EA Motive’s remake of Dead Space does most of what you’d hope for, massively improving the game’s visual quality and improving certain mechanics like zero-g, while retaining the frantic combat and lightning-paced story of the original. Your mileage may vary on the changes to the story, but it feels for the most part like the Dead Space you remember.

There's no doubt that Dead Space will have the same impact on new players in 2023 as it did when it came out in 2008. This is a textbook example of how much a game could be improved while remaining faithful to the original. Motive has set the bar very high when it came to remakes.

Blood-curdling horror - weapons, gameplay, enemy design and visuals are all at their best. However, the performance drops are a real annoyance.

If you're a new player and this is your first time with the game, you'll be very much impressed, while those who played the original Dead Space will feel familiar, but the improvements are so spot on that they will push you to relive the nightmare all over again. Dare you?
