Leaving the controversy at the door, Hatred is a solid 90's isometric action game, with 80's horror cheese, and cringe inducing parodying of what is considered edgy.
Repetitive, short-lived, without a real plot and full of senseless massacres. Hatred is not a great game, but in its simple twin-stick shooter mechanics, it’s not too bad and it provides some cute ideas.
My name is not important; what is important is what I'm going to do. I just **** hate this world, and the human worms feasting on its carcass. My whole life is just cold, bitter hatred, and I always wanted to die violently. This is the time of vengeance, and no life is worth saving, and I will put in the grave as many as I can. It's time for me to kill and it's time for me to die.
The only interesting aspects of Hatred are its graphics, impressing indeed, and its ability to shock the player (although in a very cheap way). Beneath that, there's only a dull and repetitive gameplay.
It is without a point. It fires its Uzi rounds aimlessly and manages to hit nothing. It’s not bad, it’s not horrific, it’s not reprehensible and it’s not memorable either.
Hatred, as a piece of transgressive art, is a failure. It's dull, its violence crass and unconvincing, and its understanding of humanity shallow at best. But it's worth looking at, if only to understand why, and if only to interrogate what, if anything, could be gained from peering closely at something so horrible.
Honestly the most fun I've had in a long time with games. It's a bit of a shame how soft companies get just because of trying to appeal to everyone.
Would love to see games related to such simple ideas. Something like Wrath would also be cool. Idk
I do admit the only issue I faced were optimisations when executing people, but I don't think slowing down the cutscene like that is a bad thing. (Helps with my brain to refresh itself in intense combat)
Try the game. Experience the game. Let your worst be revealed and make people die. (in-game)
Perfect concept, perfect setting, good start to story telling, intriguing start of storyline, then everything goes to ****, the endings cheap, the gameplay is mediocre at best, to summarize the gameplay, kill a bunch of npcs (which i did indeed enjoy) then get bumrushed by hundreds of lobotomized police that do chipdamage (play hard mode then!) Yeah just curb stomp them and you immidietaly return all of your health.
THE ONLY REASON THIS IS RATED 7, is cause of the amazing mod Hatred 1.666, it changes the ending to something realistic, the mod combines irony and real world opinions, and caters to the concept of being bumrushed! Instead of finding yourself killing 10 people and being bumrushed by 20, you now can kill 600 children and get rushed by 200 swat members! :D. NOT TO MENTION it makes the game first person, which makes this to a gory mess with colours! This game never needed to be huge and indepth, its a shooter that is pointless just like the npcs! (In game and in real life)
This concept **** could've been big, unfortunately there seems to not be enough intrest in mass shooting spree game concepts, hopefully somehow it get polished through mods. Anyways bye bye!
I have no problem with a game like this, that is not the reason I am giving this a negative review.
If you look at it, Hatred was pretty much a publicity stunt for a new studio to get controversy to get money, and... it worked. People hopped on this game to defend its content matter, when really neither the content matter or gameplay is even that good.
Many issues like low framerate, graphical glitches, execution glitches, terrible camera position, bad voice acting from the main character, and stupid AI hold it back from being really good.
I get that they were going for a Postal style game here, with the camera locked in a overhead view. However, Postal did it because of how it was designed. This game could have easily been modified to be played in 3rd person. The main character sounds like someone trying to force themselves to act 'edgy', and 'threaten'. Why the AI runs back into the same house their buddy was just shot it destroys the whole point of people 'scared for their life.'
Somethings are done right, like the environmental destruction, voicing acting of the civilians and executions, to a certain extend.
One thing that was also blown way out of portion was the executions. They are supposed to be this gnarly showcase of dying in the worse possible way, but I've seen better, and even more gruesome executions in games like Manhunt 2, and The Punisher.
Hatred can be enjoyable, but I find that the game is more of a publicity stunt, then an actual game.
