While Nuclear Throne might at first appear to be another difficult bullet-hell or punishing roguelike, a little practice quickly reveals a system that is meant to make the game accessible by a broad range of players. Thanks to the procedurally generated levels, weapon drops, and opponents, the game has virtually endless replay value and is an outstanding free game from Epic Games this week.

Nuclear Throne knows what it is and makes no bones about it. It’s a difficult, stylized roguelike with a clear vision of what it’s trying to achieve.

Another perfectly constructed neo-arcade game from the makers of Luftrausers, which perfectly marries twin stick shooters with roguelike punishment.

Nuclear Throne manages to walk a fine line between challenging, with options for the player who wants to succeed in the post-apocalypse, and unfairly difficult, filled with obstacles that will induce frustration for even the most hardened fans of the rogue-like genre.

A crowning achievement for Vlambeer, and one of the finest action-roguelikes ever made.

It’s wonderful, evil, gorgeous, horrible, satisfying and merciless. You might hate its lack of checkpoints, or bad levels spawns that almost instantly kill you. It doesn’t care. Screw you. It hates you. But you’ll love it.

Brain off, trigger finger on. It's easy to forget the simple visuals and it's ideal for a quick game.

The downside is waiting time for release, but thats ok I guess I bought luftrausers and it lacked the love that nuclear throne gets from devs.

Things will try to kill you, and you need to learn exactly how many hits each enemy takes, how each of the multitudinous weapons deals damage, how the mutations work alongside weapons and character traits, what particular types of terrain and obstacles do, etc. - otherwise, you'll fall apart in this randomly-generated top-down shooter. It's brutal! That's part of the fun - even the developers often have a hard time getting past World 5. [@GenoTS - that chest is called a "Mimic," and having no indicator that it's a mimic is the whole point of the enemy, a la Dark Souls. It's supposed to be tough!] Coming up on its 30th update, the team has been squashing bugs and making new stuff, while broadcasting their work on Twitch. They've almost reached their creation of the final level now. The soundtrack is awesome. The pixel art is expressive, weird, and cool. There are some really freaking cool secrets, and also some secrets that will kill you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I write reviews honestly, so I'll be honest about this one. As old as this game is, and as many hours as I've clocked into it as I have, i have to say it's very 'meh'.

First of all, this is a roguelike game. I.E meaning you have permadeath. When you die you start over from the beginning with any selection of characters for you to choose from. There's 15 in total, 3 of which are hidden characters. Now you might be thinking "OH! That sounds very diverse and interesting!" Wrong.

Here's my biggest pet peeve with this game, and it probably resonates with a lot of other people as well. This game is a roguelike BULLET HELL. Every enemy in this game fires bullets at you nonstop. The enemies that don't fire bullets will charge at you and deal contact damage. Of course, each character will usually have an ability called a 'Throne Butt' which will give them that extra edge, unfortunately only a handful of characters actually have a USEFUL throne butt.

Now on top of all of this, the level design is procedurally generated. Meaning everytime you restart and try again, the layout of each level you go through is different. It's all got the same theme, with it's own little secret areas, but the levels themselves are random. As far as I can tell, the enemy spawns are also randomly generated.

So let me get to why this game is a pain in my rear end more than most. The fact that your SKILL has nothing to do with your success in this game. You can put over 100 hours into this game and still be just as newbie as you were when you started, and the REASON for this is because for the most part, due to the random enemy spawns and level layouts, you could spawn in, and immediately be thrusted into a corner with 5+ enemies, all of which shoot a ridiculous amount of bullets. And of course, if you chose the wrong character, it's going to mean you either die instantly, take massive damage, or just barely escape. This can be a problem on EVERY consecutive level you go through, as each level is randomized like the last. Therefore, it becomes this war of attrition, waiting for your luck to shine through so you can get a decent run and maybe make some progress.

And before anyone tells me to "git gud". Consider this, I have over 150 hours in the game, I usually spend 2-3 hours playing at a time, and I have NEVER ONCE beaten the final boss. The reason? Bad luck. No, not because I didn't "find a golden gun" or "dodge the insane bullet-hell" the final boss spews out. NONE of that. It's because I get backed into a corner, through no fault of my own, due to the incessant lack of dps, luck, and bullet patterns.

Now that I've gotten the rant out of the way, I'm gonna explain why I rated this a 5 instead of a 1. This game is cutesy, don't get me wrong. The art style is fun, (though the pixel art gets tiring after a while) the bosses are interesting in their own right, regardless of difficulty, and the overall level design, as far as theme, is pretty cool. The characters, the levelling up and progression system is also kind of cool, but some of the characters are borderline stupidly hard to unlock, and their throne butt abilities are just so mediocre, you don't even want to bother trying to unlock them. Despite all it's flaws yet cutesy details, I can't recommend this game. If you get it on sale for like $5 bucks, sure. It's a fun game to sink a few hours into without pulling your hair out. That being said, I am relatively disappointed in this website's user critiques, given that NONE of the positive reviews I overlooked seem to mention any flaws whatsoever.

No game is without flaws, guys. Sometimes it's helpful to be critical, and save people time & money.
