The Alps in Steep are both exciting and relaxing. It is so much fun to spend hours and hours on your snowboard in these amazing looking mountains. There is not a lot to complain about, apart from the paragliding which is just not the same as going skiing or snowboarding.
Steep isn't perfect, but it's a great experience. Doing challenges or just navigating the maps, it's easy to enjoy the game. If you like the genre, give it a try.
Taking “Steep” as just a fine foundation for eventual sequel would be a little unfair, but in some way, it fits. Yet the free riding in a huge open world can entertain you for a few hours, if you can turn a blind eye to a handful of nonsense and bugs.
The game works best in how it empowers you to toggle between idle exploration and obsessive score chasing whenever it suits you. However, as time drags on, if that drive to make headway begins to wane, there’s little else to keep players hooked. Then, of course, there’s the ridiculous online-only policy that is bound to frustrate, adding a completely expendable layer to the year’s best winter sports game.
Parts of the Alps absolutely take our breath away, and sky-hopping across the peaks in pursuit of sweet rides is sometimes as gnarly as its riders like Billy Romero or Ruben Bosman love to claim. But Steep is a repetitive climb through a vacant landscape. If you’re hungry for fresh powder, there are miles of it, sprinkled across some of the longest courses we’ve ever conquered in a video game, but Steep is going to have to figure out who it is before it can make a name for itself.
Featuring systems that focus on community engagement and competition among friends, there are some clever new ideas that haven’t been seen in games before. Still, Steep falls short where it matters most, offering you more moments of anger than adrenaline. If you have plenty of patience then this might be the game for you, though most will end up pissed off rather than going off-piste.
I got this game for free through the Ps Plus service for January of 2019 and I can say this game surprised me in every way. When I first played it I felt kinda lost since I didn't know what to do, but after some minutes I realized what a chill, fun game it was. It's so nice to see that this is an open world game and not just linear levels, I actually feel I can get lost in this game by exploring the montauins and going anywhere I want, it's a very nice immersive experience. The challenges might get a little bit frustrating at some point but the level of fun I have while doing them surpasses the frustration without a doubt. This is a beautiful, fun, open world sports game which deserves a higher rating on metacritic, that's why i'll give it a 10. Cons: Microtransactions and DLC's. 8/10
Rating: 7/10
Steep is a good game that offers about 10 hours of solid gameplay before it becomes somewhat monotonous. The game dazzles with its stunning graphics and delivers an engaging experience, especially in wingsuit flying and skiing. However, it falls short in terms of mechanics in some areas and lacks compelling long-term motivation.
Pro:
(+) Stunning graphics that truly showcase the beauty of the mountains.
(+) Engaging gameplay, with wingsuit and ski activities standing out.
(+) Offers a considerable amount of content to explore.
(+) Unique theme and topic that set it apart from other (sports) games.
(+) Expansive and beautifully realized open world.
(+) Mountain stories add a super atmospheric element to the game.
Con:
(-) Lack of a narrative makes it less appealing for single players, as it drops you into the world with little direction.
(-) The progression system is underdeveloped, with too much unlocked from the start.
(-) Paragliding experiences are dull compared to other activities.
(-) Challenging mechanics may frustrate players, especially when striving for gold medals.
(-) Overwhelming character customization options that can detract from the game.
(-) Absence of a true offline mode limits accessibility.
DLC: The available DLCs are somewhat nice but not essential to the core experience. They add some variety but do not fundamentally change the game's dynamics. And there is plenty of content in the base game. (The rocket launcher is also hard to control)
On paper, it looks promising. Big map, freedom, customiazion and fun gameplay with a lot of possibilites. Sure, at first it's fun to race, to slide, do some tricks, check the area and find some secrets. But it gets dull and unsatysfying pretty quick. Social aspect seems the core of everything in this game, and maybe with some friends there is more fun to be had, but overall for me it's a wasted potential.
For me, this game was unplayable. I found the controls to be off and I didn't have the motivation to learn how to master them. I played 2 hours maximum and decided to quit this game.
