It's certainly fun. It takes a fair number of risks, and more of them pay off than fail. Some of the events aren't fun, but most of them are entertaining in at least some manner, and a handful are great fun.
  2. A game such as this is much like a big bag of mixed lollies. There’s yummy stuff like Freckles and Sherbies, but there will always be a big, yucky aniseed ball or three lurking in the bag to keep a nasty taste in your mouth.

Although it’s not an essential buy, it can very well capitalize on the fever around the Olympic Games. Especially because it has a good amount of competitions, online modes and worldwide rankings. Just a word of advice…your fingers will probably pay a heavy price. [July 2008]
  4. It’s as though no effort has gone into the gameplay beyond what merely works, and little thought has been given into making either the main single player or multiplayer modes fun or worth pursuing.
  5. Beijing 2008 doesn't escape from the stereotypical Olympic Games video game mold – it's a series of some good and bad mini-games that, while somewhat fun with others, don’t amount to much entertainment.

The heart of an Olympics game is the multiplayer mode, and this is exactly where Beijing falls short. [Sept 2008, p.76]
  7. Archaic button mashers such as Beijing 2008 just aren’t relevant anymore.

People who say this has too hard controls just needs to try the game some more although i do agree that Weightlifting and Kayak is awfully hard but the rest (36 others) are just plain amazing fun! I do love my Olympic games and this one it's very high up on my list. It might not break new ground, but is very good at what it does.I do love my Olympic games and this one it's very high up on my list. It might not break new ground, but is very good at what it does.

Visuals and sound are pretty standard for the 7th generation of consoles, but still manages to create a nice atmosphere. Especially when your athletes hit the podium. It is also nice to see a lot of top medal winning countries make the roster, but not as many as I would have liked.

The game play itself is pretty solid with a great variety of events. For the racing in particular, whether it's running or swimming, there has been heavy criticism for the 'starting' mechanic. But once you get the timing right, it can be add to the fun of the game. As for all the other events, the quality is pretty consistent. The exception might be Teakwondo as it gives you no guidance as to how it works. But every other event is a simple matter of getting the mechanics down pat and then can be a lot of fun. To complement all this, there is a pretty cool 'Olympic games' mode that acts as a single player campaign that provides a decent challenge. Additionally, there is great local multiplayer support to enjoy some healthy competition with mates.

Very good Olympic game overall. If playing on the PS3, make sure your console is offline or the game won't work. Other than that, very good if you enjoy your summer Olympic video games.
