Finally a creative game with that seems to ooze style and substance. I spent hours just exploring the starting areas playing with the game mechanics. The music and graphics and animations are superb! And I didn't get bored with this game unlike Red Dead Redemption 2.

It takes at least a dozen hours for the story to show some skin, for the characters and the world to get into motion and it demands hours of close attention to be paid from the gamer itself, because the complexity of this Hollywood influenced undeniably japanese vision. And it will not get that amount of attention from most of said gamers. We live in those days, days like we set off in our cars to drive the kids to school, rush to the office, or take on the mall for some groceries, we consume news and human relations in quick instant portions ... where in the world of Death Stranding we won't even have our rig to ride on for starters, we have to lay down the foundations of roads from hard gathered materials for ourselves and for others, for the community, for people. Yes, it can be daunting sometimes, called like 'courier simulator', 'sherpa' or 'delivery game', 9gagged with DHL boxes and FedEx logos, but under the surface the hard strolling mean some deeper things the developer aimed at: you connect the few people who live scattered in their shelters, you discover through mud and snow and make relations, you make yourself famous and liked (here you go facebook addicts!), you solve problems, you learn, you build bridges both metaphorically and literally. And in the meantime you put together the puzzle pieces of a 30 hour long bitter-sweet sci-fi story about a cataclysm and afterlife, flesh and soul, about love and human relations, about the universe and thoughts about religion or our mere existence. And if you can't wait for it, you wil miss it. This is why Death Stranding is not for everyone and why I said many gamers won't even recognize it's values. But people should really stop burning down bridges these days and stop trolling with others who would be up for this package.

Hear me out porters, trust me when I tell you: this game Delivers!

Kojima and his team created something fresh and exciting and I truly hope DS will be a precursor for future games that focus on this kind of storytelling by combining current social trends with riveting character presentation. The loneliness one feels throughout the game is so fitting into today's social media world, where the hunt for likes and views quiets the humble thrive and longing for real connections. I swear Kojima and I share the same brain... or subconscious.. or SOMETHING! Only his is on a whole other lvl than mine.. for sure. I absolutely love this game and consider it not only a masterpiece but a generational milestone for gaming in general. Not even kidding. And it's not the crazy narrative. (though that is certainly a piece of it) It's the whole package. I feel like none of it would work without the other and it all just falls together seemlessly to create this amazing immersive world that you, and other real life people like you, are pushing through in order to see it to the end. I am legit having a blast playing this game. Be a lot cooler if other people could "get it" but that's the thing about people... We're all different.

For anyone serious, and I mean "serious," into gaming. This thing is a fn milestone. For most... It's probably really cool to look at and boring as hell.

    I love it.

...and before it's "damn man, you must REALLY but up on Kojimas nuts."

I don't love the game because its Kojima.
I love Kojima because he made the game. (and many others)

Being someone who's been gaming since i was 1-2 y/o (still have my 2600 in the closet) 37 now...
Its a milestone, thats the most appropriate word i can think of atm. And yes, im having a blast.. so i guess that means its "fun."

I think there's a lot who consider Kojima = Metal Gear and expected Metal Gear not really understanding Kojima at all. And while I can dig some MG, and would love something in the vein of it.. I'm more than glad he finally created something he wanted to create vs something a studio made him create. There's a reason Konami wanted Hideo to create more MG games... the general populous loved them. This is not a "general populous" game. I feel like Sony could be taking a hit off this. I just saw all the review bombs on this site before "spell checking" and I just want to thank them (SONY) for letting a true mind show what he's capable of with the digital medium. This is something that RARELY is allowed to happen and if this doesn't prove that Sony, at least at some point in their chain, cares about the gaming medium and pushing it forward, then I don't know what else they could possibly do. Make more shooty shooty/hacky slashy games i guess... the same things we've been playing for the past 20 some odd years. People buy those.

It’s sad for me to see the negativity over this game because for purely selfish reasons I hope to have more experiences like Death Stranding in the future. I’m generally not someone who thinks that there are such things as review bombs, nor do I think people’s thoughts should be moderated, metacritic included. I believe everyone has the right to express themselves regardless of their opinions effect on others and if a game is bombed with negativity then there is probably a reason for that. It is in that freedom of expression that we find truth.

I have to wonder though, are these 0 reviewers playing the same game as I?

Am I really that different than so many other people where I find Death Stranding (at times) to be pure unmitigated genius, and other people are bored to tears?

And yet, I understand their point of view because if Death Stranding is anything it is very, very different than anything else out there today. It is less a game and more of an experience.
    Death Stranding is beautiful.
Death Stranding is lonely, so lonely
Death Stranding is hopeful and yet full of despair, setsunai.
And yes, Death Stranding is full of moments of tension and gripping fear, it is not a game devoid of action as others would have you believe. There is great tension in the game with MULE’s and BT and I find the balance of everything quite enjoyable.

It is not entirely inaccurate to state that this game is essentially “Being Norman Reedus”, and I am enjoying it!

The amount of work, effort, care and love put into every minute detail of the character and his animations is astounding to me and I find that alone very entertaining. The line between where Sam begins and Norman ends is quite blurry, and the experience is all the better for it. I personally feel a real connection to this game. I feel a connection to Norman Reedus, and to this world. That I can feel emotion strongly, to feel like I know someone from a digital representation of their character is completely amazing to me. Hideo Kojima must be acknowledged for his lovingly detailed recreation of Mr. Reedus’ actual person.

As you can tell, so much of the Death Stranding experience hinges on the personality of Norman Reedus. We as the player spend a great deal of time with just him and the environment. You’ll know best whether or not that interests you, but I will also say that the story in this game is absolutely top notch. It is a truly wonderful (again that word) experience that I feel moves me in as similar manner as something along the lines of Howl’s Moving Castle.

In short, if you’ve the funds I think you owe it to yourself to see whether Death Stranding is for you, because if it is... it is an experience like none other in gaming today that I am so glad I didn’t pass on because of other’s criticisms.

And if you try it and find that Death Stranding is not for you, then I am truly sorry for whatever it is that I have which you do not posses that allows me to feel such a strong connection to this game, it’s characters, it’s world, it’s music and sounds, pain and joy... the whole amazing experience.

If you decide for whatever reason that you don’t enjoy Death Stranding, then I’ll thank you for supporting me and others ability to wholeheartedly love this strange and unique game, experience. Dear Mr. Kojima, please keep on keeping on. It was brave of you to release this game and we are all, those of us who have hearts opened to it, all the better for it.

I am fully entertained and while I have much more to go in this game, I’m already looking forward to the next experience.

I came into this having only watched the original trailer when it came out. All I heard when the game was released were the complains about it being "boring" and "divisive" but when I eventually started it, I simply was sucked into a beautifully terrifying world.

I resist giving anything full marks. But it's been two days since I was dumbfounded and in awe as I finished it at 5.30 in the morning and I still cannot stop thinking about it. The fact that I didn't even realize that I logged in 87 hours before completing is a testament to how engrossing it was to me.

The first thingAfter completing Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain, Kojima started to work together with Guillermo Del Toro on various projects. After the famous split between Kojima and Konami, one of these projects Death Stranding had been teased for quite a long while. Now it's finally out, the reviews have been streaming in and so far it's got mixed opinions for a variety of reasons. The first thing that might put people off is that at it's heart, it isn't an action game (or at least, it isn't at first). It does appear to share and engine and some control mechanics from the MGSV games but other than that, this is entirely it's own property and focuses more in terms of Sci-Fi and Horror than other genres.

You play as Sam Porter Bridges, motion captured and voiced by Norman Reedus (an actor most famous for The Walking Dead and Blade 2)
Sam is essentially a courier tasked with travelling the strange and inhospitable landscape caused by a post-apocalyptic event where society is reduced to living mostly in bunkers with very little resources. Key aspects of the game include balancing your cargo load, carrying collapsible ladders and climbing anchors to make yours (and other players') journeys easier. You have to maintain your walking boots, keep your chest-mounted BB unit happy and look after your health and stamina. Crouching makes you slower and makes carrying heavy loads easier. Walking and running will shift the cargo weight onto one side, forcing you to move more slowly or stabilise yourself to avoid falling and damaging the cargo.

Throughout the world your presense to other players (if online mode is enabled) will allow for player-made structures and signs to appear in your game. You can award these likes so that other players may reward those who are generous with their time and resources.

You'll encounter some rogue forces too. There are the MULEs which are a hostile entity that will steal your supplies and will enter combat with you if you stray into their territory. There are the BTs that appear during periods of heavy rain. These semi-invisible forces are hostile and will attempt to pull you into the underworld which will force you to respawn and make you lose your progress.

There are a large number of cutscenes in the game, some are from colleagues giving you information but others are fully rendered video sequences which set the story and fill in the world. There is an extensive backstory and text notes which fill in the game's lore and give you a better idea of the world.

Later on you are able to fabricate objects based on blueprints and can upgrade your equipment. The map will open up to you allowing you to travel further and take on riskier jobs.

The visuals in the game are stunning and definitely push the Playstation 4 to new heights in terms of technical achievements. The music and sound in the game is exceptionally well done, some of the named bands contributing songs have done a great job and these always play at the right time. The voice acting is excellent and definitely some of the best VA work I've heard in recent years. Gameplay is understandably a bit of a mixed bag for some, your character is meant to be quite normal so you do have to keep your footing and watch your stamina gauge to avoid tiring yourself.

Take a look at some videos and other reviews and see if this is the right game for you. In my opinion it's great and one of my favourite videogames.

Weirdest game I enjoyed this much in a while. Love the Kojima feeling in the game, animations dialogs and storytelling are suberb. Even the longest runs keeps you busy and thinking planning all the way and you really have an open world solution to your delivery. Yes is it A to B but the road is always tense/scenic/exploration-friendly/dynamic

At its core, Death Stranding is a stealth game early on not unsimilar to that of something like the latest Resident Evil or the Silent Hill project Norman Reedus was originally a part of. Instead of being locked in a house wandering aimlessly for direction, you're in a gigantic open world doing the same.. hoping not to be caught and figuring out what the hell is going on. Death Stranding is one of the most brilliant games I've ever played. It's also probably the most divisive game I've ever seen. Either you really love it or you really hate it. Either way, this is not the game you were expecting, as there's nothing else like it. This is a game about the journey, so if you're looking for a cheap dopamine hit, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

    First of all,
Death Stranding is one of the most brilliant games I've ever played. It's also probably the most divisive game I've ever seen. Either you really love it or you really hate it. Either way, this is not the game you were expecting, as there's nothing else like it. This is a game about the journey, so if you're looking for a cheap dopamine hit, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

First of all, this is no action game. For the most-part it's a laid-back walking simulator with open-world decisions making (route planning, mostly), community single-player (ala Journey), and long cut-scenes. I don't agree with people saying it takes a lot of patience, but its not a game you can easily brute-force your way through.

There is combat that makes up about 10% of the game, and it is quite simple. You've got grenades, guns, and fists, not very unlike Metal Gear. It'll have you hiding behind things, advancing down corridors, unloading on enemies. Death Stranding also has stealth, whereby you'll be crawling through areas past ghosts who are rooted or patrol a small area, trying not to alert corridors of enemies, or sneaking through tall grass in the open world.

The world design feels fantastic. It looks nothing like the continental US, but it feels so much like a real place. The graphics are some of the best ever employed. The world is a main character here, and makes up the majority of the challenge you'll be facing, which is perfect for a game about traveling across the US mostly on foot. The world is populated by lovely mountains and crags, rolling fields... The whole time I kept thinking 'Final Fantasy 15, eat your heart out', which is the closest thing I can compare it to, but that game so pales in comparison as an epic roadtrip.

The story, for once in a Hideo Kojima game, wraps itself up and feels complete. Through most of the game it feels like a lot of symbolism and campiness, but damn does it come through in the end of tying all the loose ends together. And not at all in an obvious way. Still, there's a lot of symbolism that crosses with other Hideo Kojima games. It feels like this is the story he wanted to tell all along with the Metal Gear series. As such, the game is way more abstract than a classical adventure; more like a psychological thriller than anything in the action genre.

The player is wrapped up and swaddled with story at every turn. This is probably the most generous game with full 3D cutscenes that's ever been made. All the characters are brilliant, and even though I spent dozens of hours with them, it left me wanting more and more of those interactions.

The community features are brilliant. You can build bridges and ziplines for other players to use. Build them various way stations. Put warning signs for other players, ala Dark Souls (but simpler; no 'try using both hands' placemarkers). Let them use simpler tools like your ropes and ladders. You can then like the works of other players. You can also recover the lost cargo of other players or interact with their deadbodies which binds you together. Or you can request they make deliveries to you. The whole thing leaves you feeling very connected to other players in a way that I haven't seen in a game in years. Whether they placed a sign in the perfect place to help you out of an open-world chase, or they had that latter in just the right spot to avoid a ghost, it's just a flood of appreciation for other people.

For the controls, I think people really over exaggerate that they're "bad". This is about as engaging as you can get for a game about walking. The weight of everything feels so satisfying, especially after you get exoskeletons that let you jog around with a ton of weight on your back. But it's not nearly as hard as people have said. Just holding both triggers is usually enough to keep your character stable. And the vehicles are not too difficult to control. You're not meant to drive literally everywhere, this is a game about crossing mountains. You can't cross a mountain in a van, can you? Just get out of the car/bike. I had more frustration reading the complaints of other people than I did over 51 hours playing the game.

All in all, Death Stranding is a brilliant experience. It's by no means for everyone. If your idea of a good time is best paired with a Mountain Dew, you'll probably not like it. But if you like something that's often slow or thoughtful, and so analytical that it'd make your English teacher weep tears of joy... Play it. You'll not be disappointed. Or if you're the kind of person who likes something to do while listening to a podcast, you'll probably also enjoy the gameplay (haven't tried it). Regardless, give it a try. You'll either love it or you'll hate it, and that's not even a gamble if you wind up loving it.

The mechanics are striking for these first few hours as you will find the simple task of walking from one place to another laborious and seemingly without purpose. You will find yourself overwhelmed with the many in game systems and overly complex UI. The game, although understandingly having to explain a new IP, goes about introducing this new world in the worst possible way, by telling you with endless cut scenes and dialogue. The opening experience was so harsh i found no hope in the idea of completing this game. Those that are able to find the courage to push through, will be rewarded with one of the best games of the generation. Most everything beyond that point becomes clear and meaningful. Beyond that 5-10 hour mark, the game play becomes satisfyingly addictive corollary to the increased complexity as you introduce more gizmos, vehicles and weapons. The true purpose of that harsh opening becomes clear, serving as the benchmark to gauge how far you have come through your characters progression. The story is unique and introduces fantastic philosophical concepts, driving your purpose to completion. The voice acting and motion capture acting are unmatched, aside from maybe The Last of Us. The graphics, both in game and cut scenes, are as good as any this generation. The sound design pulls you into the world with natures sweeping ambiance. Moments go from serene, to horrific intensity and occasionally peak with musical relief when a landmark comes into view. The boss fights are wildly iconic and are sure to leave a lasting impact. Hideo Kojima's tone is thickly layered into every aspect giving this his signature staples of oddly enjoyable nuances. The social aspect is not the revolution it was made out to be, but does a serviceable job in making you feel like you are part of a connected world. This is truly a unique experience that goes beyond and maximizes what the video game format has traditionally offered over other story telling and idea conveying mediums. I nearly gave up on this game, i'm glad i did not. Expand

I would have liked an option within the game to say, this is the point of no return like you get with Witcher 3. Even though the last episode you can keep playing. I would have preferred to finish everything off before the ending. Max out what I could but I kind of stumbled into the ending without being ready and then it does go on and on and on and on ... But saying that I think I will plod on to earn some more trophies.

Could be a bit of marmite game to be honest for some people. But if you connect with it, it is a good story and gets you thinking. You are kind of going to either love or hate it ... I don't think there will be much of a middle ground.

Few games have affected me deeply by their atmosphere, music, characters, mood, world, lore and gameplay. Games that permeate my waking moments, when I am alone on the commute, when I take long walks, when I'm contemplating. Life Is Strange 1 and Nier Automata are two of my personal favorite games that had a profound effect on me.

Games that permeate my waking moments, when I am alone on the commute, when I take long walks, when I'm contemplating. Life Is Strange 1 and Nier Automata are two of my personal favorite games that had a profound effect on me.

I'm only at Chapter 3 of Death Stranding but have lost myself completely in it's desolate world. It's haunting, melancholic, deep, uplifting and surreal. It's nothing I've ever experienced in any game and I find it so refreshing.

Not all games have to be a shooter, a brawler, hack and slash, etc. This is something else. I can see how it may not appeal to a majority of gamers who define games in their traditional genres.

However, if you are a mature and open-minded gamer who enjoys good music and narrative, a beautiful world, and are patient to learn a new style of gameplay, you will be rewarded.

There are no words for the emotions and feelings I had after a long and arduous climb up a mountain full of invisible BTs, carrying 100kg of important goods, when Silent Poets' "Asylums for the Feelings" started playing on my descent.

Pure, magical experience I cannot get from any media. Thank you Mr. Kojima and co. Thank you very much. Here's a Like to you sir!

Giving this a 10 just to balance kiddo/troll votes. They haven't been complaining playing their zelda games running a to b for hours. Wow... Just wow...
%90 of the people who downvoted havent even play the game over 1 hour! Are you kiddin me? This game resolves in last 5 hours as most Kojima games do. If you cant endure simple chore mechanics then stop playing games all together. This

This game is not a masterpiece but damn it close to being one if not for some weird mechanics or plotholes, other than that it's a breeze to have this kind of refreshing creative pieces in gaming world.

Если эта игра не стоит прохождения и потраченных на нее 132 часов , то я вообще не знаю какая стоит. Спасибо Кодзиме и причастным за незабываемое путешествие. 10/10.

Tons of mechanics, which are very intuitive to control and working like clock. I was optimistic, but that exceeded all my best expectations. Gameplay loop is so engaging that you literally forget its core is walking. You just need to play it and feel it with your own two hands, because YouTube videos don’t convey even the 10% of its fun.

Отличная игра, не понимаю почему такие низки оценки у испанцев (видимо тупые). Наиграл уже часов 50, все устраивает, сюжет очень атмосферен, одна история Хартмана чего стоит. Всем рекомендую

Definetly not for everyone, but it is definetly a game for me!
Classic Hideo Kojima Game with easter eggs, story - gameplay is very unique - and overall graphics are AMAZING! BUY this game if you have ever played a Hideo Kojima Game, if not, you should make this your first! 10 out of 10 for sure! I love it. One of the best, if not THE BEST looking game I have ever played

к. все шикарно. Jogo diferenciado. Proposta de game fora do habitual. Porém é uma experiência muito singular, precisamos viver o personagem e entender o que o jogo tem a nos oferecer.

admittedly it takes like 10 hours for the game to properly start but once that happen its "GAME OF THE YEAR" experience. Anyone who gave it less than 6/10 is just obvious troll who didnt even play it.

Very good fantasy. Such games are very rare. Gameplay, unfortunately, not everyone will like it, but give him a chance. Lose yourself from the monotonous shooters and just meditate, enjoy a real trip

Death Stranding is an acquired taste. It is a game that needs to get hands-on in order to truly appreciate its beauty; no amount of reviews or gameplay videos can fully deliver its message and undertone unless you actually play it. It's a truly unique experience and a melancholy ride that bordering on art. The underling theme of solitude/connection, of life/death, something rarely found inDeath Stranding is an acquired taste. It is a game that needs to get hands-on in order to truly appreciate its beauty; no amount of reviews or gameplay videos can fully deliver its message and undertone unless you actually play it. It's a truly unique experience and a melancholy ride that bordering on art. The underling theme of solitude/connection, of life/death, something rarely found in AAA games, is expertly explored and at the same time cunningly blurred in Death Stranding. Producer Hideo Kojima has always been vocal against mindless killings in his previous works and with Death Stranding the message is unmistakably at its pinnacle. Although the premise and setting of Death Stranding may look puzzling at first, it is a game fundamentally about helping others while saving yourself. Definitely a contender of best game of 2019 and possibly the most important game of the decade. Expand

Great acting, pacing, graphics, sound, music and controls.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
