HyperParasite is a frenetic, fast-paced roguelike that is not for the faint of a casual’s heart. Its uncompromising action keeps you on a razer’s edge, and the sixty characters ensure every playthrough is not the same. But most importantly, it is a pitch-perfect love letter to the 1980s. Now, terror has no shape.

HyperParasite is a twin-stick shooter with plenty of variation, style and humour but some might find it a little frustrating due to its strict roguelike mechanics.

Body-swapping for new powers never gets dull. HyperParasite is a creative roguelike with major progression issues, but heaps of derisive charm and tight twinstick shooting. [Issue#175, p.77]

HyperParasite has unique game mechanics, but its harsh and unfair difficulty can ruin the mood for a lot of players. There is nothing wrong with games being hard, but HyperParasite punishes players in ways that aren't fun or enjoyable. It is difficult to continue playing a game can constantly force players to start over from the very beginning every time that they die. HyperParasite will only be enjoyed by the most hardcore of gamers.

Curiously, not everyone can be absorbed on your first attempt, and so you’ll need to collect brains and invest cash in order to unlock the more powerful hosts. This obviously adds to the release’s replayability, but when paired with its punishing difficulty, the formula begins to grate. Local co-op doesn’t really ease the repetition, although your pals will certainly appreciate the pop culture references.

There's a lot to like about HyperParasite; bombastic action, smooth gunplay and literally thousands of 1980's pop culture references are all good fun. It's just a shame that its spoiled by an overly punishing roguelite structure, asking you to play thorough the same content again and again to make any noticeable progress, rendering the pacing of the game an interminable slog.

Cool, brutal, unforgiving and cool (I said it already). Game's rad, got my butt kicked endless times and I am still trying to beat it, mightCool, brutal, unforgiving and cool (I said it already). Game's rad, got my butt kicked endless times and I am still trying to beat it, might be the first time this happens. Buy this or die sad. Expand
