Combat does get harder later, but it stops short of doing anything new or interesting. But it does its job well enough for a parent to steal the controller of their kid for a few battles. That old rivalry with Star Wolf needs to be settled.

The "toys-to-life" mechanics are very well implemented -although not essential- in this beautiful and well crafted open-world space shooter. If you can overlook its repetitive nature and the absolute chore that are the side missions, in Starlink you'll find a quite enjoyable experience suitable for young and older gamers alike.

Starlink offers a refreshing view on toys-to-life with a lot more seriousness than its competitors. Its an expensive one though.

With or without the unnecessary toys, Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a commendable space adventure. Even with the repetitive grind and randomly scattershot space combat, this is a great-looking, gratifying game of strategic action and environmental exploration. Switch owners are undoubtedly the winners, but there’s something here to enjoy on any platform.

Clearly, Starlink: Battle for Atlas is repetitive and its storytelling is more than conventional. But the dogfight and the big open world are just so much fun. A good addition to the toys/video games cross-over.

Starlink is an interesting and enjoyable open-world game, one that fully understands the appeal of exploring new planets and dogfighting in the cold depths of space. With a small fleet of ships at your disposal, it can be a lot of fun to progressively assault and weaken the Forgotten Legion's hold on the galaxy. It's just a shame that if you're interested in the physical models, you'll have to spend more to get the same experience as the digital version.

Starlink doesn’t have many bells and whistles as a game, but the figures are just so dang cool and easily customizable that I can see it really appealing to a wide swath of people. The core gameplay is fine and while it’s nothing to write home about, it does enough to support what comes together as a very impressive experience. Starlink doesn’t redefine the toys-to-life genre, but it does have some of the most beautiful figures I’ve seen and a pretty good game to complement them too.

Colorful and action-packed space opera with a funny toys-to-life component. Deductions for the outrageous pricing policy.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas has moments of exciting combat, neat customization, and some engaging mechanics. However, this new intergalactic action adventure suffers an engine misfire due to a ton of repetition, occasionally awkward controls, and a lackluster story.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas can’t decide whether to take its toys-to-life concept seriously, or drop it completely. It has a good, if somewhat repetitive, open world experience to offer, but it’s held back by mistakes that aren’t entirely its own fault.

A good core experience with novel ideas stifled by a disproportionately high price tag, embarrassing amounts of repetitive filler, and pay-to-win mechanics. [Issue#156, p.87]

It is EXACTLY the game I hoped it would be: arcade space combat a-la Wing Commander, X-Wing, and StarFox, well-made toys that would look goodIt is EXACTLY the game I hoped it would be: arcade space combat a-la Wing Commander, X-Wing, and StarFox, well-made toys that would look good in any display case, and casual open-world gameplay like other TTL games. Some of the characters are a little flat (Judge, Mason), others are fantastic (I enjoy the performances of Eli, Kharl, Shaid, Razor, and Hunter especially). The story isn't mind-blowing, however, it's easy to follow and compelling because it's very well-told. They don't waste a lot of time, they just jump right in, which is the best way to tell these stories. The StarFox stuff is probably the highlight of the game, though. All four members are there, same voice actors, they got the writing pitch perfect, and the inclusion of SF sound effects and music and Star Wolf can easily trick you into thinking you're playing an actual StarFox game.

I think the low scores on this game are stemming from what a lot of low scores these days stem from: overhype and outsized, unrealistic expectations. The game world is huge, yes, but the game itself is pretty casual (space dogfights can be pretty hard though, even on Normal difficulty). There are a limited amount of things you can do, but as you do them you can unlock more and more lore, and upgrade your characters and weapons to enable better and better things. If that's what you're into, and you like that arcade style shooter gameplay, this game is for you. If not, it's probably not your cup of tea and you should look elsewhere. Personally, it's not going to make my Game of the Year list or anything, but it's a great way to unwind at the end of the day and collect some sweet sweet plastic.

The flight and fight mechanics are simple and easy to learn. Space to planet transitions are well done. Fights are addictive. There are some fights in space, but most of the fighting takes place on the surface. There are seven planets (and one moon) and all are memorably different. There is not a lot of boring grind and pointless mining for resources. But the game true potential is ruined by corporate greed. Campaign is too short, economy and planet management aspect is reduced to occasional fights with legion and outlaws. After campaign ends (which is really just an extended tutorial for the game), there is absolutely nothing to do besides defeating regularly spawned primes. There is split screen multiplayer, but no playing over the network. The graphics looks dated by PS4 standards (looks the same on PS4 Pro). Full Review »
