What This Is the Police is known for returns in the sequel, but its difficulty is so brutal that you may not even get to see all of it. The tactical missions definitely help to mix up the gameplay, but they take away from the more relaxed nature of the first title that we were expecting to be prominent here too. Fans of the original will find what they’re looking for – an engaging story and crime dealing management – but they’ll also have to put up with alarming difficulty spikes that can seriously hinder the experience if managed incorrectly.

The sequel improves on the original in many ways thanks to more variation and turn based elements. Voice acting is decent enough. The amount of cut scenes and the long winded story detract from the actual content though and gameplay does get a bit repetitive in the long term. At its core a fine game but some odd choices hold the game back.

This Is the Police 2 takes the first game and develops certain aspects whilst adding tactical battles to break up the daily routine. The story and presentation are strong but it falls into a similar gameplay loop to the first game, for better or worse.

Wierd, gloomy and grim storyline. The controls and content match. Only carried on playing to try and glean what goes on in some people's minds.

The sequel tries to shake this up and build upon it, but for one step forward there are two steps back.

The graphics are noticeably improved. The city/neighbourhood you oversee now has a lot more detail and feels more modern. The pictures are more detailed and the turn-based combat has just enough detail to be charming. The story is still told via visual novel, so make sure those graphics are for you.

The gameplay is where they seem to have tried so hard but executed very badly. You're still in charge of a team of cops on alternating days, but the overwhelming experience I had was of the odds being constantly stacked against me to an unbalanced degree. On a daily basis I was not only having cops not show up to work like in the first game, but now they were getting fussy as to who they would not work with and jobs that they would take. This makes for very frustrating and stunted gameplay, like the game is trying to be awkward, not challenging.

The addition of turn-based combat events at first seemed really innovative, but again falls flat quickly. I experienced a lot of unbalanced gameplay again here as my enemies always seemed to one-shot me and I could never ascertain their locations until it was too late, and the penalties for failure are severe.

This brings me to a major flaw in game design. Last time cops were easy to replace, but this time you get beer tokens depending on your daily successes, making for very paltry rewards and a punishing gameplay loop where failure means you cannot hire replacement staff, sending you on a downwards spiral.

This then takes us to the hamartia of the gameplay. If you have three successive days where you lose more tokens than you bring in, it's an automatic game over. This is an incredibly stupid game design that can cost you progress and be the cherry on the cake of frustration. This could have been done so much better.

Finally, the story. This again is the best part of the game but again massively undermined by the gameplay flaws and a lack of pacing. I can't imagine most people getting far enough to enjoy the ending of the story, much like the first game. I certainly didn't.

This is a sad end to the series, as I cannot imagine the game getting another sequel. They tried to innovate on the protracted and mundane first game but this falls flat on its head massively. Avoid and send this to gaming prison.

Not only is it bloated with pointless dialogue for majority of the beginning and bores you to death, but it’s ridiculously unfair. Tried to send one cop on a job and they said they will only go if they have backup and very high rated cop wouldn’t go with him because she decided to play cards instead????? What???? I could understand if it was a low rated cop but 500? Seriously? Game is a absolute joke, first one is not great but somehow better than this. This is not worth your time at all and after 3 hours I uninstalled. Expand

However I will never touch the game again or recommend it to anyone in its current state. As of June 25th 2020 after every day you are alerted that an error occurred during the auto save, this is untrue and the game will still save but can be concerning. Yet, while playing I exited to the main menu on December 15th and was then informed my data couldn’t be loaded causing my entire save had been lost. While in its current state it exists only as a useless font for people time, if fixed in later patches I would rewrite my review but as of now you’d be better off spending your time playing any other game.
