This is a 2008 Surprise of the Year candidate for a number of reasons:

    * It's a Space Invaders update attempt. These have historically ranged from utter crap to subaverage. * It has the word "Extreme" in the title. This is usually the pierced tounge kiss of death for a videogame. * Taito's attempts at remaking Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands for the DS and PSP were

    * It has the word "Extreme" in the title. This is usually the pierced tounge kiss of death for a videogame.

    * Taito's attempts at remaking Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands for the DS and PSP were major disappointments.

    * Space Invaders Extreme flies in the face of all these points and turns out to be the best retro revival this side of Pacman Championship Edition on XBox Live Arcade.

The developers of Space Invaders Extreme seem to be big fans of Q Entertainment's games (eg. Lumines, Every Extend Extra, Rez HD) because they go for a very similar visual/aural style with this. They've also clearly examined what makes Q Entertainment's games work because Space Invaders Extreme is videogaming LSD at it's finest.
While the main game may seem a bit brief, the urge to play on to milk the levels for all they're worth (and hopefully get S grades all the way, which I certainly haven't done) will keep me coming back to this for quite a while.

Fun to pick up and play for a short period of time but ultimately doesn't feel very rewarding.

Among the best arcade games on the PSP. An overall great game in general. It's not just Space Invaders with a coat of shiny paint. It improves upon the original arcade classic in so many ways while still keeping the fundamentals which made the game a classic in the first place.

Space Invader's Extreme is one of the most enjoyable games I have played on the PSP. Every single aspect of the original Space Invaders has been improved. The level of improvement of this game over previous incarnations is like the difference between RE3 and RE4. It will be $20 in the US when it is released so you have NO excuse for not buying. Pre-orders will encourage Taito to keep Space Invader's Extreme is one of the most enjoyable games I have played on the PSP. Every single aspect of the original Space Invaders has been improved. I played the demo and was instantly sucked in. The graphic updates and slight game mechanics make if not on par but better than the original space invaders. An this gameplay makes it a great portable. Its best played on the psp to because the ds has two screens, meaning your guy is on the bottom screen an the enemy are on the top screen it can get a little annoying.

  1. Its minimalism, but just because something’s minimal doesn’t mean it is without soul and anyway, the graphical updates mean it’s awash with garish colour and this just about does enough to bring the title up to date – albeit to that of a modern doujin homebrew game.

It reinvents a gaming classic, and proves that the nuts-and-bolts mechanics of yesteryear can still captivate. It’s engrossing, a stiff challenge and a fine addition to a venerable history. [Apr 2008, p.97]

"Groovy," "trippy"...however you want to describe it, Extreme does right by the classic. [July 2008, p.84]
