Switch owners will find plenty of content to chew through, particularly with friends, and while it may be the gaming equivalent to a Hulk Smash, that isn't to say that it isn’t a rollicking good time.
  2. Jul 31, 2019
Altogether, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 innovates upon the original titles, creating the first fully-rounded Ultimate Alliance title. The depth provided is welcomed, even if it did leave less time to polish synergy attacks and the camera controls. Whether you are looking for a Marvel game or just want a fully-fledged RPG, there is fun to be had with Ultimate Alliance 3.
  3. Jul 22, 2019
While not perfect by any means, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is the Marvel game fans have been waiting years to play. Was it worth the wait? I’d say so. But the feeling I’m left with is that I want another. And another. We get two or three good Marvel movies a year; it’s made me greedy. This game will make you long to play a dozen more.
  4. Jul 18, 2019
Basically a modern scrolling beat'em up to play alone but even better with friends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is exceptionally faithful to the source material, being it comics or movies.
  5. Jul 18, 2019
Ultimate Alliance 3 works great as fan service. It finds a good balance between "hack and slash" gameplay and RPG elements, yet combat mechanics are too simple.
  6. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is an unexpected but welcomed sequel to a beloved franchised that hasn’t aged particularly well. So, is it worth playing? Thankfully yes. By taking the best of what made the series great in the first place, Team Ninja and Marvel Games made a solid action RPG that fans of the genre will have a lot of fun with. Marvel fans will also like Marc Sumerak's work of creating an interesting story that stands on its own. Sadly, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 rough edges will draw it away from perfection and aspects such as camera problems, poor AI and a very simple puzzle design can't be overlooked. The good thing is that it won't stop you from enjoying it.
  7. Jul 30, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 retains much of the formula that made the original games the best of their genre. It has a massive roster of comic book favorites, a slew of recognizable locations, some well-designed boss battles, and an intricately crafted storyline that touches upon every cornerstone of the Marvel pantheon. What holds it back from true greatness is a wretched camera and a few missteps with the dialogue system. Outside of that, this is a fine return for one of Marvel's great gaming franchises. Ultimate Alliance is still the best it is at what it does and what it does is very nice.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a welcome return to form for the 13-year-old franchise. Creating superhero dream teams is definitely the selling point here, but the execution does fall victim to a few stumbles.
  9. Jul 29, 2019
These are the colorful bursts of superhero nonsense I’ve missed since 2017, splashy and unserious, as intricate as I want it to be, stretching out for as long a grind as I care to ride, brimming with the loot and customization I want in an action RPG, and enough content to make me forget I’ll never again play my leveled up Squirrel Girl. Oh, Marvel/Disney/Nintendo.
  10. Jul 29, 2019
This is a wonderful example of a Superhero video game done right, with all the proper colorfulness and hectic combat one would expect in a game like this.
  11. Jul 29, 2019
It all makes for a packed and enjoyable experience with plenty to offer for fans for Marvel and classic beat-em-ups. The roster of characters is vast and excellently portrayed, the story is fun and the moment to moment combat remains enjoyable throughout. Some uninspired level design, camera quirks and unfortunate design choices around character levelling keeps it from the upper echelons of the Switch library but grab a couple of friends and it’s hard not to have a seriously good time with this one regardless of your level of affinity for the world of Marvel.
  12. Jul 26, 2019
Overall, The Black Order is easy to pick up and play and there’s nothing to keep you from enjoying the thrill of fighting alongside pop culture’s most popular fictional heroes.
  13. Jul 23, 2019
For a series that has been away for so long, it hasn't missed a step; stuffed full of fan-service for followers of whichever flavour of Marvel is present. The combat is mashy, but meaty and feels really satisfying when the synergy is just right. This is most fun in co-op, yet is also marvellous in solo. There's a mammoth amount of replayability thanks to grinding through, levelling each of the characters up, taking on the Infinity Trials, and a challenging New Game+ to overcome, not to mention the new content to come with the Season Pass. For a long time now, it's been great to be a Marvel fan, and now Ultimate Alliance 3 is another reason why.
  14. Jul 23, 2019
This is a game which can be enjoyed by the entirety of the Marvel fanbase. It’s nerdy enough for the hardcore (did we mention that Elsa Bloodstone is a playable character!). It’s got every character those who’ve only ever seen the films would want to see. There’s real diversity within the chosen roster too. A team of Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage and Captain Marvel really is the future that liberals want. Perhaps most impressively, it’s a game which is pitched in that sweetest of spots; true universality. Children will enjoy this game. Adults will have a blast too. This, of course, is the Nintendo way, but it’s still worth applauding during this most divisive of times.
  15. Jul 22, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a great beat-em-up game to play with friends. You might not be standing in a hot arcade pumping quarters into a machine, but trust me, this is the pure arcade experience brought to the modern age. Be ready to smash your head against tough bosses and hordes of enemies as you try to protect the universe from Thanos… again.
  16. Jul 22, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is one of the most cathartic and fan service heavy Marvel games ever.
  17. Jul 21, 2019
More so than its predecessors, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order excels because of its character diversity and the ways its disparate heroes work together. For this reason alone it's an ideal co-op game, whether you're playing with another friend in the same room or with three friends online, but the AI more than holds its own if you're playing alone, too. It falters in places, but there's still nothing quite like the Ultimate Alliance series, and this long-awaited third entry makes it a triumphant return for a superhero brawler that feels more relevant than ever.
  18. Jul 18, 2019
A couple of stripped back features aside, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a great series revival that should keep new and old fans busy for quite a while. With DLC coming later this year, it will only get better.
  19. Jul 18, 2019
There is a lot of fan service in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Dark Order and that’s a smart move from Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja. The game is tailored around the expectations of Marvel’s fans, with tons of characters and references to both movies and comics. Sure, cameras are bad and graphic is not so good, but superheroes lovers, the only target of the game, will not care about that too much.
  20. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order presents us with great combat in a dungeon crawler. The representations of the characters are unique in this post MCU world. It's repetitive, but it's really worth it.
  21. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is comfort food. It retains the multiplayer dungeon crawling and love of the source material that made the two previous titles enjoyable, but it also elevates the action just enough to make it better and more entertaining than what came before. Not all of it works as well as it should, yet it’s vision isn’t compromised by the missteps it makes. You’re going to have a good time when you play Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. And sometimes, that’s all you really need.
  22. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel fans have a date with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. Although it can be improved graphically and we miss some characters and game modes, it is a very fun title, which will give us many hours of entertainment, either alone or in company.
  23. Jul 18, 2019
A mighty multiplayer brawler brimming with content, and carefully crafted characters that will delight both comic book veterans and MCU fanatics.
  24. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order isn’t a groundbreaking, narrative-heavy reinterpretation of the comic characters you know and love, but then again neither were the first two games. In that regard, it’s a very faithful sequel that mines the vast roster of characters from the comics while including plenty of nods to the current state of the more modern Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it doesn’t do anything particularly new or outstanding, it embraces the brainless fun of its brawler combat with gusto, and it’s at its absolute best when played with a team of player-controlled supers.
  25. Jul 18, 2019
Team Ninja and Nintendo have done a bang-up job, and I sure hope it paves the path to even more Marvel games.
  26. Jul 19, 2019
Ultimate Alliance 3 it's a good hack 'n' slash game, part old school and part new with the Team Ninja expertise.
  27. Jul 19, 2019
It is a fun and light alternative that allows players to enjoy an adventure full of fan service in co-op mode, although it has some camera problems.
  28. Jul 18, 2019
In yet another take on the Infinity Stone saga, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a fun and irreverent comic book story that pulls from an exceptionally wide pool of Marvel material. Its combat systems are fairly simple, but they were still surprisingly engaging as I excitedly experimented with different hero combinations while my roster of A, B, and C-list characters grew. Its vast array of post-game upgrades and other extras has been uninteresting so far, and there are (unsurprisingly) some inherited camera issues in co-op, but this superhero brawler is still a treat to play alone and with friends alike.
  29. Aug 5, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order doesn't do much wrong, save for its camera angles, especially if you're just looking to have a fun time with some friends in the Marvel Universe. Overall, it is a decent action RPG that I had fun with while it lasted. However, if you aren't someone with a passing fondness for Marvel lore in general, there are other action RPGs on the Switch that you might want to try out instead.
  30. Jul 19, 2019
A superheroic beat'em up that may have been better with a more complex fighting mechanics or a bit more of ambition throughout the whole proposal, although it manages to be fun for a while.
  31. Sep 30, 2019
As a whole, Ultimate Alliance 3 is an immensely enjoyable game that really reminded me how much I love Marvel’s wealth of characters. The roster is huge, the combat is gratifying, and it all looks slick running on Switch either docked or in handheld mode. There are some blemishes in terms of player progression, a bland soundtrack, and the unwieldy camera, but it’s nothing that should stop anyone from going out and giving Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order a download.
  32. Jul 29, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is the ultimate comic book power fantasy. From its empowering gameplay mechanics which evoke the heroism in the game’s iconic characters to its event comic-styled storyline and presentation, there is a lot for Marvel fans to enjoy here. While the moment to moment gameplay more than justifies the price of admission, when taking a step back, certain facets of the game’s inherent design knock it down a few pegs--but not enough to dissuade me from giving this game a solid recommendation for the comic fans in the room.
  33. Jul 26, 2019
By staying true to the gameplay mechanics implemented in the past by Raven and Vicarious Visions in X-Men Legends and the first two Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, Team Ninja offered a game packed with content, a superb roster of super-heroes, a great fighting system and a well written story. Lots of performance issues keep Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 from achieving greatness, but it is an enjoyable game nonetheless.
  34. Jul 23, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 The Black Order is the ultimate cross-over for every fan and gamer at heart. The simple, but fun gameplay is challenging and the roster of characters is by far the best point here. It's a solid dungeon crawler, with minor flaws.
  35. Jul 23, 2019
Although some may be growing tired of the Ultimate Alliance formula, this edition serves up another welcome feast of comic-book action. It has an effective, current narrative with solid pacing, and demonstrates a strong desire to do right by the fans. There is content for days, the character roster is deep and well-chosen, and the voice acting is great. Overall, Ultimate Alliance 3 is a timeless beat 'em up which perfectly pays tribute to the variety of the Marvel universe.
  36. Jul 19, 2019
Team Ninja takes Marvel’s super heroes in a new direction, leading them even further now from being the stars of an action rpg to taking on the baddies in an almost classic 3D-brawler.
  37. Jul 19, 2019
If it is repetitive and not very imaginative in its missions, Marvel Ultimate Alliance: The Black Order can count on its fights, a very successful artistic direction and a three-star cast to seduce the players, be they hardcore fans of the comics or mere MCU amateurs. Simple and effective, it is consumed alone or with friends, without moderation.
  38. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is not the best superhero game, but it's entertaining, has a lot of fan-service and improves with its co-op experience.
  39. Jul 18, 2019
Sure, the basic game already has a lot of content, but a bland aftertaste remains.
  40. 75
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is like a B-movie. You know that it isn't the best in areas, but you still enjoy it with all your heart. The characters are well crafted, which makes the game such a joy. The environments, voices, and the general feel is strong. Obviously, the camera issues and endless corridors can drag down moments of the fun, but the action keeps everything flowing and enjoyable. The action never stops, which is the ultimate strength of the title.
  41. 75
The game excels in many different areas, especially uniting a massive cast and bringing heroes to the roster that almost everyone can identify with. But that doesn’t excuse annoyances and design choices that make appearances throughout the lengthy campaign.
  42. Jul 18, 2019
There is a lot of fun to be had in Ultimate Alliance 3. It isn’t perfect, however, if you’re a fan of the franchises it is based on you’ll have a great time.
  43. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a dream come true for any Marvel fan thanks to the huge character roster and the serviceable story involving the Infinity Stones. Sadly, the game may not be all that appealing to those who are not particularly invested in the Marvel universe, as the combat and RPG mechanics, while solid, lack depth. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order gets quite repetitive after a while and the lack of content variety also means that even co-op will eventually feel old. A solid effort, for sure, but far from one of the best Nintendo Switch exclusives.
  44. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 doesn’t really do anything new, but it’s a thoroughly enjoyable if mindless whirlwind tour through Marvel’s hottest properties. An entertaining story, satisfying combat and over-the-top action are sure to delight Marvel fans.
  45. Sep 6, 2019
Even if you're not a Marvel fan and just want to play a simple beat 'em up with a few friends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is certainly an enjoyable experience. Just don't expect it to be as mind-blowing as the films apparently are.
  46. Game World Navigator Magazine
    Oct 11, 2019
Level design never rises above corridors and boxy rooms, and graphics are almost the same as they were ten years ago. On the other hand, there are a lot of various enemies to beat and secrets to find, so in the end, MUA3 still makes for a memorable adventure. [Issue#240, p.48]
  47. Nintendo Force Magazine
    Apr 28, 2020
There's a lot holding this one back from being as fun as the MCU – but it is a fun game if you follow its parameters. [Issue #41 – September 2019, p. 70]
  48. Aug 15, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a mighty callback that brings back a series that was an afterthought. It is a successful return for the series, boasting strong gameplay and an impressive and growing list of available heroes. There are a few missteps and annoyances, but these do not outweigh the positives features this game offers. The game shines when played with friends, but is perfectly fine as a single player action RPG romp. It is an easy game for Marvel fans to pick up and play, but is also enjoyable to those that might not be as familiar with the characters and settings.
  49. Aug 14, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order shows that together is better. With more than thirty playable characters, there is a favorite for everyone. You fly through the levels, while keeping everything short and small. The game definitely gives you the feeling of being a superhero offering lots of spectacle on screen.
  50. Aug 9, 2019
Packed with fan service and with a huge amount to do, it’s difficult to dismiss Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. It can get repetitive, and the story does drag a little, but comic book and Marvel aficionados will enjoy it nonetheless.
  51. Aug 7, 2019
There is a lot to be said about the sheer amount of characters and being able to team them up together. Playing with friends is also much more enjoyable than flying solo, when it works properly. The upcoming DLC is exciting, the return of a mindless beat ‘em up feels good, and I just love a solid comic book title. I don’t think the price of admission is worth it in the end, but when this hits $30-$40 I definitely recommend it. There is plenty here for Marvel and non-Marvel fans to enjoy.
  52. Aug 5, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order doesn't try to be more than it is, a fun romp with characters everyone has come to know over the past decade. While fighting with the camera can be frustrating at times, the game itself is extremely enjoyable especially if you’re a fan of Diablo-style RPGs. Additionally, it serves as a great stepping on point for anyone unfamiliar with the franchise and is accessible to any and all fans.
  53. Aug 2, 2019
We have waited a long time for another game in this series but what we got is a title that just plays safely. The number of heroes is vast and are plenty of amazing cinematics, but to many problems with simple basic enemies can ruin the fun. All in all, it's a great cooperative game for a bunch of friends to enjoy and have fun with.
  54. 70
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a solid beat-em-up that tops its predecessors, bringing all the colourful known and unknown facets of the Marvel universe together with gusto. But despite it’s strong art direction, potent replayability and often enjoyable combat, it still comes off as feeling rather basic.
  55. Jul 30, 2019
There’s plenty of enjoyment to be had just beating up baddies as Wolverine, Deadpool, Spider-Man, and co., but considering the 10-year wait, Marvel fans could be forgiven for wanting a little more.
  56. Jul 29, 2019
Sure the combat can feel a little repetitive or the difficulty uneven. Sure you’ll fight with the camera amongst the villains themselves but at the end of the day, these are problems that irritate rather than ruin your time spent playing. In essence, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is like the movie summer blockbusters it’s trying hard to imitate. It’s big, it’s silly, it’s sometimes shallow but every time I pick up the controller I’m always left entertained.
  57. Jul 25, 2019
A great idea...but one hampered by a poor camera and formulaic gameplay.
  58. Jul 23, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order can best be summed up as average. It's neither bad nor exceptional. It's fun to play for Marvel fans and those who get giddy at the idea of Ant-Man fighting a giant Ultron-possessed robot or Ms. Marvel teaming up with Spider-Gwen. At the end of the day, the branding is about all that makes the game stand out. If you're not a die-hard Marvel fan, there isn't a lot here for you after the initial rush wears off from brutalizing baddies with the superheroes of your choice. The fun is still there, and in co-op, the game gains a lot more fun.
  59. Jul 23, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is not a brilliant game, but that is okay. The game offers entertainment for everyone, because there are so many Marvel heroes to choose from.
  60. Jul 21, 2019
I’ll be honest: the single corridor thing keeps up for most of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. A ridiculous roster makes this one for Marvel fans; each hero and villain gets their moment in the spotlight as the overarching story plays out.
  61. Jul 20, 2019
If fans of the Marvel universe will find plenty of reasons to enjoy this experience, other players might frown at the game's occasionally lagging performance, its too simplistic combat system and lacklustre audio component, which is not to say this is not an enjoyable and interesting game.
  62. Jul 19, 2019
While Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is fun, I sometimes wished it pushed the envelope a bit more and tried something new. The game excels in multiplayer and playing your favourite characters from the Marvel Universe never gets old. Its combat is fun and gets better the more you upgrade your heroes. Its story is very cliche but that's expected. All in all its a fun pick up and play multiplayer brawler.
  63. Jul 18, 2019
Pick 'n Mix with super-heroes. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is the game Switch needs right now but not the one we deserves.
  64. Jul 18, 2019
The Ultimate Alliance comes roaring back with this Nintendo Switch exclusive. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 pulls inspiration for Marvel comics, movies, TV, and more to create an homage to the brand's long history. Unfortunately, some camera issues and general readability mar the overall experience, and the alternate costumes fall short of the Ultimate Alliance standard. Despite that, this is a great couch co-op adventure with all your Marvel favorites.
  65. Jul 18, 2019
At times Ultimate Alliance 3 becomes a little repetitive, but Team Ninja have crafted a likeable scrapper that sets out to entertain, and succeeds in doing just that.
  66. Jul 18, 2019
My time with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was filled with peaks and valleys. It has great moments where everything is clicking, followed by lulls where it all falls apart. The story never really gets going, however, but is a fun exploration of all things Marvel. For that, it delivers a little bit of fun, but this experience is all about the character reveals and getting to test them out, even if the worlds they explore and challenges within them often lack excitement.
  67. Jul 18, 2019
It succeeds most as a tribute to Marvel. Its giant roster offers a great variety of heroes. And while the gameplay is simple, it can still be satisfying with some cool cinematic moments and boss fights that I won’t spoil for you here. I think most people know what they’re going to get with this one: a simple Marvel-themed beat-’em-up game. Just don’t expect anything more than that.
  68. Jul 18, 2019
With the Marvel IP less muddled and the simplicity of this deal between Marvel and Nintendo, I'd love to see another with enhancements in tow.
  69. Jul 18, 2019
Overall, appreciable elements such as the ruolistic system and the amount of content make it a fun and smooth product, albeit conceptually repetitive and poorly finished.
  70. Sep 9, 2019
Despite being developed by one of the best action game studios in the business, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order falls short of its predecessors. Gameplay more often than not turns to button mashing monotony and is only briefly satisfying when playing with a new character.
  71. Jul 30, 2019
The simple synergy-focused combat can be fun with some friends, but Ultimate Alliance 3's padded plot proves pernicious for its diverse cast of wretchedly one-note characters. Add to that a campaign that's poorly paced and painfully inconsistent performance, and you're left with a repetitive and unexpectedly plain package that doesn't adequately justify the revival of a franchise.
  72. Jul 26, 2019
There’s a certain charm Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 has that will no doubt resonate with fans; it’s just too bad it’s put together in a less-than-optimal package.
  73. Jul 25, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a standard, run-of-the-mill, hack and slash action RPG. Its shining moment squarely falls on the shoulders of its Infinity mode, with boss fights flying by in a close second. But its lack of polish and attention to detail means gameplay falls by the wayside, leaving a gaping, sore wound that no ultimate alliance can solely heal. Nothing more than a fun beat ‘em up that’s best played with friends, not CPUs.
  74. Jul 25, 2019
And that's what Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is about. Those moments of fandom where something happens just like you imagined it, or even better. Hulk and Venom side-by-side, Ghost Rider and Rocket Raccoon cracking wise. Each iconic location from the films and comics rejuvenates the game as the mechanics bog it down. There's so much potential for a great game here. If only the game wasn't in constant (Civil/Secret/you name it) War with itself, fighting against the fun with RPG nonsense. For now, we'll just have to find the fun ourselves.
  75. Jul 24, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a budget reimagining of a fan-favourite series that fails to live up to the heights of that franchise. It plays and looks like a last-gen game, and it was a struggle to plow through the game, even for review purposes.
  76. Jul 23, 2019
Unless you're a fan of the comics, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 hasn't got much to offer. The gameplay is quite generic, the story is dull and the technical side of things is quite a let down.
  77. 60
While it's shallow and has an overly narrow focus, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is good fun, and serves as excellent, entertaining fan service for the Marvel faithful. Get a group of friends together, and this is a glorious throwback to the days of couch co-op adventuring, with the development team even throwing in a camera that very nearly ruins the experience. That is true commitment to recapturing the essence of playing games from yesteryear, right there.
  78. 60
The thing that I kept saying to myself when playing Ultimate Alliance 3 is that if this wasn't a Marvel game with such beloved characters and familiar story lines it would be a bad game. A great coat of paint does raise the average for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, but its roots are a rote beat 'em up that shows off all its tricks in the first couple of hours and wears out its welcome well before the credits roll.
  79. Jul 19, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is both a fun adventure (especially in couch co-op mode) for fans of Marvel characters and a game that looks like it was made a couple hardware generations ago. While the game is clearly held back by its dated presentation, it has enough cool content to show a good time to fans of Marvel Characters both young and old.
  80. Jul 18, 2019
Shallow, stupid, and very repetitive but as long as you play with friends there’s a goofy charm to what is, for better or worse, the best Marvel team-up game in a long while.
  81. Jul 18, 2019
The Russo brothers have turned Marvel in to cinematic masterpieces. If you’re looking for a gaming equivalent, Ultimate Alliance 3 isn’t it, though that was never its intention. But if you’re looking to get your favourite heroes together to kick ass with friends then you’ll have a Hulk-smashing time.
  82. Aug 1, 2019
Strong post-launch support like this only really matters if the game itself is worth playing, and we can't really say that about Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. At its best, the game is a mediocre brawler, and at its worst, it is an incoherent mess with a nightmare camera, frustrating battles, and ugly graphics. Anyone hoping for a return to form for the franchise will be disappointed, to say the least.

  1. Jul 18, 2019
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is, ultimately, just fine, but it feels like a last-gen game visually and in design. You can see it in every door you have to press a button to open, in every recycled enemy, in every spotlight you wait to pass, in every move-block-to-the-right-pad puzzle. Some of my colleagues said it reminded them of one of those late 2000s superhero MMOs, and I get that. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 launches 10 years after Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, but it feels like it could easily have come out just a year later, when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were still going strong. I suppose this is exactly what some had hoped for from the game, but I was hoping for a bit more.
  2. Jul 18, 2019
If an animated rehash of 10 years’ worth of movies and television is the framing needed to get me an action role-playing game as rich, challenging and satisfying as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, then so be it.
  3. Jul 24, 2019
It feels rushed, incomplete, and woefully imbalanced...With more time to develop, this could have been something cool, but instead it requires a lot of legwork before it becomes slightly fun, and the effort's just not worth it.

The Black Order isn’t the kind of game that breaks new ground with new and exciting elements. It’s more like comfort food. It’s neither perfect nor original, but it scratches a very particular itch and lets long-time Marvel fans live out a very specific fantasy. It might not make a lot of sense, but you can finally see how Venom will fight alongside Mile Morales. That’s good enough.

When I got a group of friends together to play the game, however, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was a joy. Taking on challenging bosses with buddies, trading stories about our favorite heroes, and getting excited to try new characters as a group made it easier to accept the game’s flaws. As it turns out, this is a game that’s only as much fun as the people you’re playing with — so make sure to bring some teammates into battle with you.
