Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - Gamescom 2012 Trailer
Dec 3, 2012Sonic's second foray into the motoring world is his best yet, with a game that headlines the defining advantages of the Wii U format whilst providing more than enough to see and do for SEGA fans both young and old. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed retains trademark aspects of the karting genre, but also provides enough variation on it to be able to stand side-by-side with Nintendo's eventual Mario equivalent.
Nov 30, 2012Amid a sea of sloppy ports, the Wii U version Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed shines like a veritable beacon: with the possible exception of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 it's the best multiplatform title on the console, and might just have the edge over the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, not least because offline play is now available for five players instead of four.

It lots of the characters from sega's past, which is great if you grew up with those games. If you didn't, it might be harder to relate to the characters but it's a racing game so it shouldn't matter too much.
The tracks are very well designed and play extremely well. There are three parts to this game: Cart, Airplane, and boat. The cart plays the best in my opinion, it is completely flawless. The airplane and boat can sometimes be hard to control but that may just be me.
There IS a gamepad only mode. You just need to swipe down on the gamepad when the game starts up and then you can play it on there. It was extremely simple to do and I had no problems.
The only beef I have with the game is Danicka Patrick, not sure why she is there when they could have had someone like Vectorman in there but to each his own, maybe some people will like her.
Overall, I give this game a 10 because it is truly a great game, one that is overlooked and this should not be the case. This is not a port either because the game was developed equally for xbox 360 and ps3 and even came out the same day. The game also has a few wii u specific modes that I have yet to try. Overall, there are very little flaws and the game is miles ahead of the last game, which I personally thought was fun to begin with. All in all, this game is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.… Expand

It has everything which is wanted in this specific kind of game. There are many modes, heaps of challenges and tonnes of replay value along with many playable characters. The tracks and challenges are probably the best aspects of this game. The tracks constantly change causing for a transformation of vehicle, meaning laps are rarely the same. The challenges allow you to test your abilities and obtain new skills for races. Modifications are obtainable and allow for those to have any racer race how they wish. The online is great and never lags. If you enjoyed Mario Kart Wii, you will LOVE this game.… Expand

It's a faithful port of the other versions with a boatload of Wii U exclusive content auch as off-tv play, 5 player local multiplayer and exclusive multiplayer modes revolving around asymmetric multiplayer. The critic reviews don't reflect the current quality of the game since it had a pretty severe bug that has since been fixed. It's beyond me how review sites can slap a permanent score to an obviously not permanent mishap in good conscience.
I'm not giving the game a full 10 because I am not too fond of the SEGA characters and the game will get brutally hard if you want to 100% it. If you want a Kart game to hold you over until the next mario kart, this is it. And it's a damn good challenge at Nintendo to best this game.… Expand

It's nice that the courses change from water to air so you're not just doing 3 laps of the same thing all the time. The point I'm taking off is for how impossibly hard it is on higher difficulty settings. This wouldn't normally be an issue, but even as a seasoned expert gamer who's conquered the legendarily difficult F-Zero GX, I found it insanely hard to unlock all the characters. I feel really bad for people who will literally never unlock some of the characters which require you to beat many missions on S class rating.… Expand

The main mode is not Grand Prix but instead "World Tour" (which is basically like a mission mode, but done heaps better) with Grand Prix as a side mode which is still as long as Mario Kart's Grand Prix. The amount of content packed into this is just incredible, it would take you longer to do everything in this than it would to do everything in "Batman: Arkham City". The transformations aren't terrible like many people may presume and really add variety to the gameplay without feeling like a cheap gimmick. As for the Wii U exclusive features, they really make the Wii U version the ideal version to get. Although the map and rear view mirror on the Gamepad aren't a massive help, the option to play the entire game on the Gamepad alone is great. Add to that the huge choice of controllers compatible with the game (You can even use another controller while playing on the Gamepad screen!) and it really makes the Wii U version the best. So far, I find this one of if not THE best game on Wii U at the moment.… Expand

Taking Kart Racing to the land, sea, and air..
Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed is a Kart Racer with 20 different tracks, over 20 characters to unlock from various sega properties, exclusive characters depending which system youre playing on, and even some weird ones like Danica Patrick..
This game features a career mode which is where all of these characters and tracks will unlock.. but there is an online option as well as your standard tournament, time attack, and single race modes…
And youre also able to play split screen in all of these modes, including the career…
The career mode is the star of the show.. its challenging and addicting..
There are a variety of challenges and paths for you to go down, all earning you 1-3 stars for completing..
There are straight up races, theres drift challenges.. ring challenges, theres a mode where youre trying to take down a tank…. Theres my favorite elimination..
I havnt had this much fun in a kart racer in a while..
Before each race you chose your character you think will be best for the challenge youre about to take on and you go at it…
drifting and tracks for speed boosts, speed pads all over the place, constant offensive and defensive pick ups…
every race is so thrilling and you actually feel like skill matters here…
With this resurgence of arcade racers from indie teams lately.. its nice to go back and feel that balance where pickups shortcuts and timing actually matters… especially with the different stats and versions of characters… it doesn’t feel luck based that everyone is on an even playing field .. it feels like every player on the track is in their own world.. in their own race where their objective and your objective and strategy aren’t the same…
this is really highlighted in modes like elimination where not only are you racing for 1st place, but you only have 3 lives… you have to choose if youre going to risk taking a shortcut where its easy to fly off of the track, or are you going to hang in the back to deal damage, or maintain the lead trying to dodge it with a giant target on your back..
this was the most interesting mode to me and I wish the campaign had more of it..
and you heard me right earlier.. every character has different versions of themselves..
as you use a character you gain xp to level them up.. this will unlock new modded versions of them wit different stats…
so if you don’t like the base stats of your favorite character you can grind to level them up and choose a different version of them that is more your play style..
the difficulty you take on these challenges though actually do matter.. you cant just easy mode your way through the career mode..
you have to go for higher stars in modes you feel more confident in so that you can unlock alternate paths with more tracks as well as unlock characters and a bonus moderation…
this adds to the addictiveness of going back and mastering tracks or modes, increasing your star count..
And these tracks are all fun to race through.. especially with the whople transformed thing going on..
you don’t get to choose when to transform but as you race there will be sections where youll be plying through the air, or racing through the sea just to land back on land again.. and all 3 of these flow perfectly, none of them annoying.. I hate flying in games.. I hate controlling planes.. but it feels responsive and smooth here, you hardly notice that anything has changes…
My favorite thing this game does that I wish it did more of is actually tranfroming the map as your race it..
there are some really cool maps that the final lap is completely different than the first 2 as things start to fall and crumble..
I wish the played with this idea more, making every lap in every tracks different..
Sonic * All Stars racing again is probably the best Kart racer not on a Nintendo console and is a must play for fans of this genre
I give Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed an 8/10… Expand
Mar 8, 20137.5 actually. Don't believe all the perfect 10 reviews, but don't believe the 5 one's either. This game is good, no doubt about it. The racing7.5 actually. Don't believe all the perfect 10 reviews, but don't believe the 5 one's either. This game is good, no doubt about it. The racing is fun. especially with friends. There are many characters to choose from, vehicles, upgrades etc. This is a proper racing game no doubt about it. The transformation gimick gives it more kick, but it's not a game changer imo. So why just 7.5? because that's what it's worth. Its a good game, but not great. I play mario kart 7 and mk7 is better than this, the gameplay is just more accurate and more challenging. So should you play it? yes! just don't think it's the racing game of the century. I'm sure that anyone can find joy in this game. If you're goinf to choose between Mario kart, or Sonic racing, go with mario.… Expand
