All in all, I’m pretty impressed with Fortified. It has very few shortcomings, most notably the repetitive music and lack of modes, but at $14.99 it gives a very fun, challenging, multiplayer experience for Xbox One and PC players alike.

A very fun, frantic and enjoyable experience, made all the better with a team of up to 4 players destroying everything that the golden age of Pulp sci-fi can throw at you. With its smooth gameplay, comic book cutscenes and pleasing graphics, Fortified will keep you coming back time and time again, and gives you plenty of game for your money.

Fortified is a cool game that gets a lot more right than it does wrong. I wish it supported local multiplayer in some form as solo play just doesn't pan out, but if you've got some buddies that want to take on a virtual Martian army, this is a great way to do it.

Fortified is a fun multiplayer romp full of 50s sci-fi camp. Bring some friends as this tower defense shooter can be difficult to tackle solo.

Fortified may not be a sprawling, epic experience — but it’s a well-made game with mechanics that stand up to extended play. With great art design to boot, it’s a solid purchase for anyone looking for a mix of action and strategy, or their next co-op staple.

Fortified marries multiple different genres while maintaining consistent waves of challenging fun in a cohesive experience. The game is best when played as part of a team, although the omission of split-screen co-op is a disappointment, and the lack of a health bar is a bit frustrating.

A nice mix of TPS action and tower defense strategy with a classical 50s sci-fi setting. Its 4 players online co-op and depth of characters customization make it a worthy buy if you have people to play with.

The game play is not going to blow anyone away, but it was interesting enough to keep me entertained for long enough to get my money’s worth out of it.

Best with a team of heroes. [Issue#172, p.95]

An interesting mix between tower defense and third person shooting, it's surely not flawless, but can still deliver some solid entertainment.

In the end, Fortified is a decent tower defense game. The classes add some variety, and the shooting is fine, but the tower defense portion could use more work.

Fortified is certainly an enjoyable game to play. The lack of variety and somewhat cliche story isn’t necessarily going to grab you, but the lighthearted tone of the game coupled with its entertaining wave-based combat makes for an pretty solid title.

Fortified! is a good game. The art style is great, and really well done. The enemies are pretty basic but fit the bill nicely, and if you can get together a group to play with, this game could easily be worth it’s budget price.

I enjoyed my time with Fortified, but it is hard to recommend as a single-player-only experience due to it being too easy, and with no split-screen on offer, you're going to have to make friends or play with randoms online. The entire story consists of three short cutscenes, so those wanting a deep narrative need not apply.

Yes, it’s a massive bummer to see games that appear to be prime split-screen titles go completely without this functionality, but if you’re looking for a solid game to hop into with friends before larger multiplayer experiences begin to drop, you could do a lot worse.

Fortified is by no means perfect, as it has a few quirks that really get under my skin. However, when it's time to lock and load against the Martians it's a challenging little game that tests my strategic mind just as much as my trigger finger.

Fortified marries several genres successfully, but its diverse arsenal can't quite make up for a lack of mission variety.

If you enjoy this genre, Fortified is worthy of your time and you should consider dropping it into your multiplayer gaming rotation.

Clapfoot has created a tower defense game unique to the Xbox One console. With a strong sense of style, AI companions and a moderate amount of shooter control, this might just scratch your strategy itch. It’s too bad then that it isn’t as accessible, and relies on repetitive gameplay with a steep difficulty to add gameplay hours to its otherwise short campaign and limited maps.

Fortified is compelling enough to get through, in its simple but gratifying gameplay, but it doesn’t offer enough to pull me in.

Some of the ideas behind the game are good, and Fortified might have been an enjoyable game if they were better developed and balanced. Perhaps it needed more time in development or a bigger budget.

Fortified is a decent first attempt at a wave-based, “tower defence” shooter from a studio that has, until now, made only mobile games.

Although it can often be too frustrating for its own good, Fortified has a lot going for it, and will appeal to those who like to work together with their friends. If you're a solo gamer, however, you'll want to pass on this one, because it's just not built to be the lone wolf-accepting title that it purports to be.

Nice idea, but Toy Soldiers does almost all this does, bugger and better. [March 2016, p.87]

With a dull location, uninteresting combat and repetitive missions, Fortified only has its ‘50s robots to recommend it. While I can't deny that devotees of the period will no doubt find something to like in this menagerie of tin monsters, anyone looking for a solid Tower Defense/Shooter hybrid will have to look elsewhere. It won't be hard to do better than this.
