This is without doubt the best retro ‘90s style racing game available on the Xbox One right now, and it is highly recommended… no matter whether you are old enough to remember the glory days or not.

It’s hard not to blush about and sing the praises for Horizon Chase Turbo, which is an addictive and engaging experience that feels right at home on consoles despite originating on mobile devices. Right from the start, this game scratched an itch that I didn’t know needed scratching, and brought back great memories that I’ll always cherish. Even when I’ve fully finished all of the tournaments and the optional modes that it has to offer, I keep it installed so that I can return to it for my fast-paced, retro racing fix.

Horizon Chase Turbo is an unshamed rendition of the 80/90s driving arcades.

Horizon Chase Turbo doesn’t come without faults, but even so, it’s easily one of the most entertaining retro arcade racers in recent memory. I take issue with the game’s unbalanced AI and its unsteady difficulty curve, collectively presenting infrequent moments of frustration. This, however, is easy to overlook in the face of its deep serving of content, its diverse track and vehicle selection, and its addictive, energetic gameplay.

Horizon Chase Turbo manages to successfully bring back the 80s arcade racer feelings, with a nice visual style and a great sense of speed. We feel the lack of some more modern elements on top of this formula, though.

It’s far away from being perfect, but Horizon Chase Turbo is one hell of a stylish way to waste 30 minutes of your day.

Horizon Chase Turbo is best viewed from the perspective its designers intended. In that sense, it’s a rather fun title, and might actually make a great option for younger drivers who are a bit overwhelmed by the “Forza” franchises. Achievement hunters may be turned off by all the grinding, and driving purists will have issues with the frequent collisions. However, when played as an occasional diversion instead of a campaign – just as one did with its arcade inspirations – this is one horizon that racers certainly won’t mind chasing.

The visuals, whilst basic by today's standards, are full of charm and the game looks great. The soundtrack is fantastic, the controls are excellent. And the game performs with a consistent framerate, meaning it runs extremely smoothly and gives a great sense of speed. Retro style arcade racing at its best. Expand

The presentation side of the game has been done extremely well and in my opinion both the visuals and sound design make the game stand out. If you like trying out lots of different tracks and vehicles then this game will be right up your alley because each track and vehicle has variety a plenty. The game can be a little too difficult for its own good at times the easy to pick up and play style that’s been implemented keeps the frustration levels down.
Technically the game holds up really well for the most part and I must admit that I was impressed with how tight and responsive the controls were. As mentioned earlier the game can be quite unforgiving and having to be flawless at times doesn’t help matters. Unfortunately the game offers no online offerings which is a shame because I think it would’ve elevated the game even higher. Classic arcade racers paved the way for a lot of the fantastic racers that have made the way to consoles since then and even though the new racers satisfied me a great deal a part of me was still crying out for a modern 80’s & 90’s style racer. Thankfully that dream of mine has now been fulfilled thanks to the fantastic racer that is Horizon Chase Turbo. From the moment I started the game I was hooked and when you take in all of the game’s beauty you soon realise that it’s a game that you’ll return back to time and time again. You’ll be pleased to know then that this game isn’t lacking in terms of content and even though an online multiplayer offering would’ve been nice you will without a doubt be satisfied with all the different tracks and vehicles you can get to grips with. I will warn you though that racing on these different tracks can be quite unforgiving at times, but thankfully I never seemed to get too frustrated because the easy to pick up and play style meant that I always wanted one more race. At the end of the day then I can’t recommend Horizon Chase Turbo enough because the developers have catered to old-school gamers and modern gamers at the same time and the fun this game delivers to you means this game is up there with the very best arcade racers around.
