Nit-picky things aside, you end up with a game that plays easier than Madden, is downright hilarious, and won’t break the bank to purchase. It really could use a full set of teams (then maybe some fake ones) and players that can speak English, but it doesn’t take long for the game to remind you why you are playing in the first place – to kick the snot out of your opponent by any means necessary.

Mutant Football League really impressed me if you couldn’t tell. You know if you’ve read some of my previous reviews that I’m a big football fan, so I’m sure that plays a big role in this. I do think non-fans would have fun as well, just as arcade goers did in the late 90’s with NFL Blitz. Maybe it’s been too long since we have had anything other than Madden to please football fans, or maybe MFL is really just that good, either way I really like it and find myself going back to it over and over despite its vanilla modes at this point. Mutant Football League has character that I haven’t seen in a parody game in many years and look forward to what Digital Dreams has to come for the franchise.

Mutant Football League faithfully recreates the arcade football games of decades past in almost every way. The lack of NFL licensing hurts the appeal, as household names and faces are replaced with hideous creatures and terrible puns. Still, the core mechanics of MFL feel so much like the games that inspired it that it's hard not to recommend to fans looking to mess with that nostalgia. Some truly terrible comedy writing gets in the way, but it's in keeping with the game's antiquated idea of what it means to be edgy, like it takes not just its game design but even its writing cues from 1995. Mutant Football League is unabashedly a nineties game resurrected in 2018.

Mutant Football League is a nice throwback to those games. The problems lie in that it feels sorely lacking in the presentation department. I would love to see it do well enough to improve upon the foundation, but for $20 it is hard not to recommend for fans that have nostalgia for those classic titles.

Mutant Football League sits within this limbo where it looks at what it can be, and just shrugs. To be fair, if somebody were to ask me if they should buy this game, I’d shrug too. It’s not the best game on the market in this genre, and I’m sure it’s not the worst. It’s just a mediocre attempt at making a spoof-esque game.

Everything you loved from the original is there, including trick plays and the ridiculous quotes from players. To top it all off, the announcer for the game is done by the same announcer as NBA Jam from back in the day.

It's hilarious to me that one of the reviewers here doesn't understand that the BS penalties are part of the game! That was in the original game, it's a joke! Bribe the ref and do it to the the team. Awesome game.

The dirty tricks in the game keeps each match random and will keep you guessing.

Content and game modes wise I think it's a little bit shallow. It would be cool to be able to start a player career with a custom character. Or a dynasty mode where you create your own team from scratch a bit like FUT.
Also being able to watch (instant) replays would be a nice feature.

I hope there will be a 2nd game and it will have some of the features I just mentioned. Anyway I would buy it.

A fun childish game for an adult.

While I am happy to report theWhen I initially received Mutant Football League, it was a broken, horribly unfair mess of a sports title. While I am happy to report the majority of the worst issues have been resolved in the full release, the game is still a bit broken.

The biggest frustration I experienced previously pertained to weird penalties that were called, often back to back, for random irrelevant issues that were in no way associated with football, such as political social media posts or insulting the ref’s mother. This has been toned down quite a bit; however, it has been replaced with AI that will regularly go off sides and attack your quarterback, essentially killing him (and any reserves), forcing you to forfeit. While this didn’t occur nearly as often as the previous issue, it is a bit frustrating and did result in breaking my perfect season.

Aside from the issue mentioned above, the AI is now much more balanced and is less likely to breakaway or become unstoppable when running for the end zone, as this was a pretty big annoyance when the title was in Early Access. The game is certainly more enjoyable now, but it still fails to live up to set expectations.

The visuals are still a bit rough around the edges, but the frame rate has been evened out, resulting in the game being a bit more appealing to watch. The controls have been improved and are much more responsive, working almost identically to the Madden franchise. The football aspect of the game is solid, but the overly violent player deaths and on field destruction is not nearly as satisfying as it could and should be. Sadly, the post play battles are still overly short, hard to control, and appear to be animated using character models from the mid 90’s Die Hard Arcade brawler.

The online features are now working in full force, although in the times I’ve attempted to battle it out on the gridiron, no other players have been present. I was able to play some PvP with friends locally, which was pretty fun; however, the remainder of the package is a bit lacking. The MFL only features a handful of teams, none of which are too different or stand out aside from their numeric rankings – if you’ve played as one team, you’ve played as them all.

Mutant Football League works well as a budget football title, but the otherworldly aspects that made the original such a joy to play are lackluster and come across as nothing but a disappointment. If you are looking for an alternative to Madden, there isn’t much else on the market, so this title will serve you well in that aspect. For those of us that want to relive the glory days of the original, we’re best left to dusting off the classic console and leaving this title on the sidelines.
