Despite its varied modes, the bulk of your time spent playing Phar Lap will consist of little more than participating in dull repetitive races, whilst tending to a shed-load of overly linear upgrade paths. The game’s depth is puddle deep, and remains as about as exciting as watching paint dry. Moreover, it relies far too heavily on cheap tactics to needlessly stretch out its longevity, only further emphasizing how quickly it outstays its welcome.

There's plenty of game modes and content and if played for periods of time vs. marathoning, there is some fun to be had as this is one of the best games in the horse racing genre. I found the online components of the game to work really well and betting on various horses along with your friends gives the game a fun atmosphere and a competitive nature to it. There's customization for your jockey and breeding the horses is also a nice addition. I also liked creating horses to put online for others in impact their in game experience. The overall horse racing doesn’t feel very realistic (as most games in this genre suffer from) and more options when you’re racing on your horse would’ve been nice as there's a solid core here just nothing to put it over the top, despite what's here being done well. I went into playing Phar Lap: Horse Racing Challenge with some level of expectations because of the publisher behind the development team. Thankfully, while not perfect Phar Lap: Horse Racing Challenge is actually a solid affair within the horse racing genre and I've played all 3 on Neo Geo, one one on the Sega Naomi, and such fair as the horrific Horse Racing 2016 for Xbox One. I was pleased in the end with the visuals and sound design here and would recommend the game to anyone who is a fan of the horse racing genre. That being said despite these little things, Phar Lap: Horse Racing Challenge definitely gets more right than it gets wrong and if you’re a fan of horse racing games, then this game will be for you. If you're not a fan of the genre, you'd likely look to spend your money in another genre. It does enough to get a recommendation from me as a fan of this style of game, and I can appreciate the risk that goes into making a game in this genre. Expand
