  • Summary: Wave Cannon attacks by trans-dimensional fighters equipped with firepower equivalent of that of a battleship. This game is thoroughly focused on expressions of how enemies are destroyed. The feeling of exhilaration in the destructions is thoroughly pursued.

R-Type Final 2 is a wonderful follow-up to a classic series that I will always be down for more of. The steep price will turn off some, but once you get into the action it truly is one of the most satisfying genres around. I want more games of this type, but I feel like we will continue to see less and less of them as time goes on. I am always happy to jump into one whenever they release though and fans of classic shmupsdefinitely need to check this one out.

R-Type Final 2 is a very good shooting game in its own right, and having the history and background of the R-Type legacy makes it even better. There’s a lot to get involved in besides just shooting stuff, and the ability to unlock new ships that may suit your playstyle better is a big draw.

A worthy tribute to the original.

R-Type Final 2 is a boon for hardcore fans of the franchise and lovers of Japanese shmups in general, especially on the Xbox platform, but should probably be avoided by gamers with short tempers or who are unwilling to learn through repeated failure.

While rediscovering this saga is an obvious joy for any shmup lover, we can’t help but quickly notice the many shortcomings. R-Type Final 2 is an honest game made with passion, but it lacks several months of development, and certainly did not need to comply with modern publisher standards with its Season Pass, even though the technical side of things still needs a lot of polish. It’s a shame, but we can hope for a perfectly playable game after a few patches. The R-Type series’ final act is yet to come.

4K version is on the disc!! I thought all Series X enhancements had to be downloaded but to my surprise this game is (almost) Series X ready4K version is on the disc!! I thought all Series X enhancements had to be downloaded but to my surprise this game is (almost) Series X ready off the Xbox One compatible disc. I did experience some frame rate issues that were decreased after downloading a patch, but still glad they made the attempt and didn't keep it as base Xbox One version on the disc. Onto the game:

    + Welcoming atmosphere
+ Good graphics for a shmup
+ Cool bonuses in the museum section
+ Nice array of vehicles and power ups to choose from
+ About 5 difficulties to choose from and it gets sweaty on the hardest
+ Varying bosses on subsequent runs
    + Decent replay value

    - Some frame-rate issues (much less on latest patch, but still present when it gets really busy)
    - Sometimes the contrast between your ship and everything else is low and its hard to keep your eye on the right thing.
    - Some boss attacks are flat-out random and on harder difficulty you will die pretty much no matter what unless you get a lucky run
    - Short game time

Note: This is my first shmup game that I actually bought and played, most others I only watched videos on. I got the collector's edition off NIS America store.

Final Verdict: Worth it if you are a diehard shmup player or you have a Series X and are dying to get into the genre. Probably not worth it at the current price for most other people because it is just too short.

I play it is enjoyable and has a high challenge rate. It pushed me to repeat levels multiple times, but it was never frustrating. The finalI play it is enjoyable and has a high challenge rate.
