L'enfant fidèle, a pre-adolescent still biologically in need of family order and stability, and Paul, the great absentee, perhaps only a putative father (the child is called Joseph), virtuous by virtue of his own death, are opposed to the paroxysmal chaos of adults with their desire in disarray, unable to distinguish freedom from libertinism by living bonds, relationships, feelings, loves dictated by hormones, and with the male protagonist increasingly passive object of skirmishes between two female archetypes.
