A group of space explorers land on a remote planet where lives "guess who?" There are some electric encounters that seem more intense and extended that in the past, but there are also plenty of concentrated dialogue passages (and more emotion). Since the scenario's a given, it's up to the filmmakers to offer something new. They didn't. But this film still plays out with grand visuals and a sprinkling of violent, tense alien encounters. While I enjoyed Prometheus in all of its cryptic and philosophical glory, I still desired more time visually spent on the alien creatures themselves, and let me tell you when they are sparingly shown in Covenant they are truly stunning and absolutely vicious to the point of extreme gore and utter chaos. This aspect however seemed to detract Ridley Scott's original Engineer/creator/Shaw plot line into oblivion as it was extremely glossed over rather quickly and unexplained which was a huge let down for me. If this would've added about 45 min of backstory and extra footage surrounding those gaping questions it could've been a masterpiece though it was still excellent. I especially was left a bit underwhelmed with Shaw's mysterious fate. Apparently their stories aren't finished according to Scott. Either way the plotting of Covenant still rolled on fine with David the android becoming even more insane and villainous with his experimentation and intentions. Michael Fassbender's brilliant double roles as David/Walter steal the show as he did in Prometheus with utter captivation and enthralling characterization. The thing that strikes me the most about Covenant was its magnificent visuals throughout with the scenery, set pieces, and aliens. Some of the best cgi I've ever seen in film as well which these days can be hit or miss. Overall this is another amazing entry into the Alien franchise that i believe has been truly reborn with Prometheus and now Covenant and will hopefully continue soon. Expand

I don't understand people that just can't chill out and enjoy the movie. It's true, not every character desition it's a logical one, but we know that as spectators, not "feeling" the tension that a person would have in the movie's horrible situations.

The acting was great, the horrors were truly horrific, the overall story it's on point and the whole atmosphere of the planet it's truly obscure. It's really Alien gone gothic. It's simply a better and more balanced movie than Prometheus. All the ideas here fit well and have enough time. The universe they have created can produce so much fun for us now!

If there is one thing that I objectively think could have done better it's the ending. It's obvious, but it's intentionally obvious. The direction could have been made in a way the plot twist was more unexpected. Nonetheless, the overall idea of it is truly masterful and it's a good ending, it just could be better executed.

Fassbender shines here acting as two robots, how paradojical is that?

I would recommend it any day, just watch it without children.

The main concern is the continued convolution of the mythology, but it is fairly balanced with heart-stopping, horrific tension and gut-wrenching gore. These two movies establish a definite, if not slightly-unstable, basis for the (allegedly) two new prequel movies that will bridge the gap between the polarizing Prometheus and highly-praised Alien. Although the stunning cinematography does not waver throughout the movie, the special effects are slightly questionable in aspects of the movie less renowned (chest-burster especially). In summation, Covenant takes the raw story of Prometheus and enhances it for the delight of die-hard fans of the original in a way that will please only the attentive and educated. Its exploration of morality and hierarchy of creation is interesting, thought-provoking, and adds a deeper meaning to the movie underneath its preliminary horror-thriller-action combo, although some would argue its execution is shaky and a major contributing factor to the confusion. My only problem is the weird protocols/behavior the covenant crew has when exploring an unknown world. But yeah it was a bit the same with Prometheus... "Oh look at that adorable space cobra".

It includes some thoughtful questionsLike Alien and Prometheus, this film focuses on the tragic outcome of a space expedition. In many ways, views should know precisely what to expect from this film: it's a hybrid of Prometheus and Alien. It includes some thoughtful questions about life and finding meaning as well as alien monsters and action. Although every Alien film has included horror aspects, this film seemed to emphasize the horror atmosphere and tone more than previous movies. I felt that it balances and continues the themes of Prometheus and Alien well, while also having a unique identity.

Characters: Strong acting and writing. This is a story about a group of people instead of a story about one person. Think about the difference between Alien and Aliens - the first was about a group and the second was about one character who had interactions with a group. People who tried to focus on a single protagonist in this film seem to be disappointed.

Story: Many elements of the story will be familiar to viewers. There are some new twists, but for the most part you'll know what to expect if you're aware of this genre. Still, the story is satisfying and contributes to the larger Alien universe while also include a few shocking moments.

Sound/Visual effects: The more you're aware of the music of Prometheus and Alien, the more you'll enjoy this soundtrack. The music is largely derived from those previous films and is appropriately evocative. The visual design and effects were breathtaking, I saw no problems.

Final thoughts: I highly recommend this movie if you like sci-fi, horror, or both. Particularly if you are a fan or Prometheus or Alien, this is a must-see. In my opinion, the Alien movies typically struggle in two places: the opening, which can go on far too long without action, and the ending, which can seem too final and lack a feeling of potential continuation. For the first time, I thought that an Alien movie had a strong beginning, middle, and ending. This movie expertly expands on the idea of what an Alien is and what can be done in the franchise.

Expand

This movie will answer a lot of your unanswered questions from "Prometheus", and the director understood that he could offer a bit more information on the universe he created 38 years ago. Picture is magnificent (CGI is overdone in couple of scenes but overall well used). In this movie you will for the first time in 3 decades have a clean, bold view of the creatures. Story is very well developed in my opinion and resumes in a great ending, with a lot more questions of course, specifically about the engineers. Let me start off by saying I liked both Prometheus and the first two films in the Alien series. I thought Ridley Scott to take what worked in each of those films to create a perfect blend of new and old concepts.

Scott is known for his gorgeously shot movies that sometimes lack the content to back up the rest of the film. I did not think this was the case for Alien Covenant and felt it was one of his more complete films. The movie did have some familiar horror movie tropes but for the most part nothing felt forced. The highlight for me was the performance by Michael Fassbender. The movie contained some of the best scenes I have by him as he had the perfect opportunities to show his range. One of the best Sci Fi Horror movies I have seen in a while, I recommend to all fans of genre or Prometheus and the original Alien movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is fine. Not great, but not bad either. Not as good as Alien 1, Alien 2, or Prometheus but better than the vs Predator movies wrt plotline and vastly better than the almost unwathcable Alien 3. Plot is OK, action sequence, etc. are what you'd expect. It's biggest flaw is there are no surprises - everything that happens is utterly predictable and unfolds exactly as you know it's going to. So you can expect to just sit back and watch it unfold and have a pleasant enough time viewing the spectacle. Expand

Humans are fallable, but we have brilliance. We create synthetic beings(androids). We make them to look and act just like us in the realest ways. We make them to be perfect, but we imbue androids with experiences that are examples of our worst traits. A creation will wish to mimic its creator. David, like humans in history, razes an entire society of people, then seeks to make himself god-like by trying to make something more indestructible than him. But David is flawed. Humans on the ship Covenant are basically missionaries posed as colonists. They bring all these things from their human lives to set upon a world they are not sure is inhabited already. What they know is that it is in the "habitable zone" and might be a new home for humans. We mythicize creation with pretension only because we so strongly dislike aspects of ourselves as humans that we forever wish to change. Redo. We wish to go back to "the Garden" and rewrite things. Alien:Covenant is a great film. It packs in quite a bit into 2hrs. Watch the film "Prometheus" again, and perhaps you will understand that Alien:Covenant is about the destruction wrought after humans perhaps finding out that we were not the prodigious result of evolution, all the while trying to extend our chaotic rule of peace, violence, simplicity, and complexity. The reasons why we are imperfect. Ridley Scott picked out great actors in Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender, Amy Seimeitz, and Dennis McBride. A well-written script and well-placed terror on film. Expand

I went into the theater expecting expecting a dud like every entry into this franchise since 1986 but walked away pleasantly surprised. The acting was superb. Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride and Katherine Waterston all delivered excellent performances. Waterston recaptured some of Sigourney Weaver's magic as a strong but believable female lead. As expected with Scott, the visuals were stunning. The atmosphere was tense. The pacing felt just right.

It wasn't a groundbreaking film. It didn't add anything particularly new. Either did Star Wars: The Force Awakens but it was enjoyable enough. Like Episode VII, the scenes that are most familiar felt more like an homage to the past than a franchise struggling to find new things to do.

If you're a long time Alien fan and stuck with the franchise through Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, the two AVP films and Prometheus I doubt you'll be missing this film despite the mixed reception. If you're unsure I suggest you go. It's worth the price of admission, in my opinion at least.

Human characters (maybe except Daniels) - 5/10. And it's not the actors' fault. Prometheus was definitely better - the humans were so self-centered, oblivious, and taking the android's obedience for granted that you could actually feel the android's anger (or disgust). And yet, for example, Idris Elba's character was memorable.

But in Alien: Covenant, humans are meat. Their decisions are as stupid as if they starred in a horror movie (well they kind of do). They split up and so on. Sometimes they show they are a bit more than stock characters, but rarely. Although you can feel their desperation, and you feel sorry for them. If you want a movie that leaves you happy or satisfied, well, pick another movie.

You can see quite a range of the Alien variants. One, which appears just for a short time, seemed as scary as the original creature. But others just dilute the Alien "brand".

And when the original creature appears, it's long after Aliens-style firefights, and there is not much suspense. There is more gore than fear. Don't let advertising fool you into thinking the Alien is the star of the movie. It's much less scary than you'd expect. The series is not about aliens anymore; it's about androids.

What can I say: it's dark, it's unsettling, there is no real (human) hero, characters act illogically... and I watched it twice. And it was worth it.

The atmosphere and the overall "vibe" of the movie was good; the soundtrack is a little off at times. Visuals were amazing, and the CGI was top notch. There were parts that were dragging, but not so much that it took away from the entire experience of the movie. The ending ruined the movie for me. It was so unoriginal, and predictable. Ridley scott and the writers are really trying to extend the Alien univers by taking it at its root. We have here a movie that explore the meaning of being god. Having the right of life and death upon the others. Having such a character as David was pretty unexpected but it feels so obvious now. I'v seen it twice in theater so I was able to really get a bit more objectif about it. The acting is good, nothing pull you out of the story at any moment. The score does perfeclty the job of taking the old songs of jerry goldsmith and reniew it. The general atmosphere of this movie is great. For what's might feel wrong I'd say the visual effect aren't always look the best. They tried to make the alien faster and ferocious by moving at an inhuman speed. The result might make us feel like it's a very ferocious creature but not very believable as we could see in the first Alien movie. It's definitely feel like cg as it is most of the time on screen ( except during the first neomorph attack). I would give it a 7/10 if not so many people would have rated it poorly for wrong reasons. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In 1979, Alien was the unintended problem of being peace that was because of no problem; in 2017, Alien Covenant is about the dynamic of peace that's because no problem. Naturally, peace is the goal of the universe, but peace being at the expense of the idea that its anti was possible seems to be the underlying meaning of Alien Covenant, an effective allegory about the paradox of the anti destroying itself so that the self is protected. At a deeper level, the sequel to Prometheus tells a very well-designed story about the beauty of an original replication. David manages to create the xenomorphs, in the process reflecting himself onto his creation, but the process is also just a replication of an ancient process that was started by the Engineers; ergo the effort of being an original replication.

Playing Daniels, an obvious allusion to Ripley, Katherine Waterston's true role is to just be a device for David, both metaphorically and literally as the film ends: in the first act, the contrived tension between Daniels and Oram is a metaphor for needless opposition as a reaction to hierarchy (and the film's theme is to attack hierarchy), and yet the irony of this is that the example of needless opposition on display is meant to be attacked, but the source of the paradox is hierarchy.
Alien Covenant is the very sharp, very keen self-awareness of understanding the true nature of paradox.

Original freedom was the mistake of self-awareness. Self-awareness means division, and thus destruction. The next stage being to separate freedom from anti by duplicating absence is also a mistake, because it betrays the meaning of absence. The solution, and the "probable" allegory of Alien Covenant is that the absence of discrepancy means to replicate freedom being separated from anti. Anti is need, and freedom not being need is the same as freedom anti being anti. Anti being anti is anti, because just being anti is the possibility of no anti, therefore it seems that to actually defeat hostility, an proactive sense of hostility is needed, which makes sense relative to the storytelling of Alien Covenant.

Many characters in the film have a theme, including Upworth and Ricks: in light of the movie's philosophy that the universe needs hostility, what's remarkable about the duo of Upworth and Ricks is that though they spend the vast majority of the film being sources of reason, their deaths at the very end of the story are extremely clichéd and trope-like. The sources of reason become sources of amusement and traditionalism, and yet the parallel is meant to be revolutionary!

When it comes to Elizabeth Shaw, and her final fate, Alien Covenant is simply being an exploitative user of Prometheus while not giving anything back in return: but this is okay, because David's story about revolution and attacking hierarchy is a worthwhile substitute for Elizabeth Shaw's story post-Prometheus. Better yet, the death and type of death of Elizabeth Shaw represents the intelligence of self-awareness being a false bias.

All in all, Alien Covenant is an impressive sequel considering its generic make-up and story concept

If you have issue with what the plot..should or should not be...that is a separate issue and I am fine with the direction Ridley has taken his creation in. The film is in some ways very much like other aliens films in terms of characters getting picked off 1 by 1 etc., but the tone and feeling is just like any other aliens film, and entertains as such, mixed in with a good enough amount of story to keep you wondering. This is a movie, made by writers....they do not have the answers to the universe...no idea what some people are expecting out of an aliens movie. It entertains and also presents some questions, and balances that tension throughout. I would say it was about as good as Prometheus, not as good as the two originals, and overall another solid sequel/prequel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie full of amazing sets, amazing acting, amazing effects, amazing visuals but like others have said not overly convincing decisions made by the characters. Having said that they weren't all brilliant scientists like some are making out and "mother" did say the new planet was a better match that where they were originally going but they could have added that its their duty to investigate a signal in space as it might well be a distress call. This alone would help solve the biggest problem with the decisions in the movie. Promethius got a lot of bad press for being to heavy on the philosophical creation stuff and light on Aliens action this is somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately that will upset those who loved the mind bending Promethius and others who want an outright Aliens horror. I hope everyone can appreciate that its somewhere in the middle and in that respect it is truly an exceptional movie. Expand

I thought it was really bold and hugely weird for a "blockbuster". I really don't uderstand the picking holes that is so de rigueur these days. It was so much better than Prometheus, which I really liked despite it's flaws (big improvement on that - be assured). Beautiful to look at, great if slightly drawn characters (it's a horror film), an absolutely sublime performance by Fassbender, and a terrifying sense of escalating doom. It features some of the most disturbing scenes in horror history. I won't spoil these, except to mention they involve the implications of what a certain android has been up to for the last 10 years, and what happens...after that ending! Exquisitely dark and almost Lovecraftian... it leaves a lot to the imagination and that's what I love it so. It's not a traditional horror film and slows down to become something different, and in my opinion better in the second half. If you liked Prometheus you're going to love this. It is Prometheus's child, so if you didn't like the style of that (rather than the execution) it may not be for you) The (original) Alien bits were the weakest bits in my opinion. This was more like a gothic horror in space, and lets face it Ridley only put the Alien in, due to the backlash against "it" not being in last film. He has said repeatedly he thought it was "cooked", and that was a good call. However, this is turning into something far more interesting. I think, if you want an Alien(s) remake, with the minimalism and realism of the space trucking original rather than impressionistic dark romanticism, you'll be dissapointed. But I am not that man. Ridley Scott is one of the greatest directors of all time and the quality shows here. The CGI is magnificent, especially the space shots...Miles ahead of anything else. Its casting is outstanding, everyone fits perfectly, especially Fassbender who might get an award for this one. The Guy Pearce and James Franco cameos are a nice touch too.The crew are not soldiers, why would they be?, and no match for the Xenomorph. Brutal and visceral as you would expect but not gratuitously so...Sure the storyline has a few holes and the gravity issue is a bug bear but it’s still excellent.
There are 4 more of these in the pipeline, Awesome Ridley, just Awesome.

It is quite a bit better than Prometheus, which I find to be an excellent film, although maybe not quite as good as the first Alien but far better than the train wreck that was James Cameron's Aliens and the films that followed. The people who dislike this movie are uneducated and unintelligible people who have no respect for true art and merely crave senseless violence and gore instead of a symbolic, beautiful, and disturbing existential masterpieces that touches on topics of creation, religion, sexuality, narcissism, and taboos. This film is very much like a puzzle and it unlocks a new piece to its deep and complex story upon each additional viewing instead of spoon-feeding it's plot to the troglodyte marvel super hero movie watching crowd and wannabe elitist pseudo-intellectuals who praise films such as La La Land and Moonlight that seem to be surrounding it and making their absolutely absurd opinions quite clear. Their hatred for this film is born of a fear of inferiority. This film challenges their intelligence and is over their heads so in turn they place themselves above it and point down to say, "look how dumb this movie is". The diminishing intellect of the populace is why we can't have nice things like Alien: Covenant and instead are given a slew of cookie cutter oscar movies and dull superhero and action movies. Expand

Fassbender was awesome in his dual role of David and Walter and i was really surprised by Danny McBride I went into the film not really expecting much from him but he shone in a serious role and hope to see him do more. Waterson holds her own on screen and i found her likeable enough as the tough female lead we see in Alien films. I particularly liked Carmen Ejogo's character of Karine and was disappointed that her role wasn't larger. Overall i think this was a solid entry into the Alien franchise and i'm hopeful for the future of the series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel to Prometheus opens with a flashback when Weyland succeeded
created a replicant named David. This David that accompanied Weyland to
search the greatest mystery of human kind. At the end of the Prometheus
Elizabeth Shaw is the only survivor along with David that she saved.
many years later, a colony spaceship - Covenant - sent to search an
alternative planet for human kind - along with a replicant crew named
Walter but then an accident caused life casualties include Cap.Jacob
Branson (James Franco) and some colony. The leadership falls to Oram
(Billy Crudup) to lead them all to the paradise planet without give any
chance for the crew to mourn and shows no empathy for Daniels (the
widow). When they catch signal from a hidden planet, Oram decided to
change course - with the official objection from Daniels as the second
highest officer. And so they landed, but still Daniels still feel
uncomfortable for this green planet hide something mysterious. So, Oram
brings his exploration team along to explore and to find the source of
the signal monitored by Upworth,Ricks & Tennesse from the outer.
So,then two of the member secretly infected by pathogen and less then
half hour, they real nightmare begins. In the middle of chaos, David
the revealed to safe them...are they really save? I was a fan of Alien
movies (Only Alien 1979 and Aliens 1986 - the rest Alien?Trash!!!).
Ridley brings out this Alien dark sci fi saga alive back from the very
beginning starts with Prometheus where at the end of the movie there
are only 1 human survivor, Dr.Shaw and she saved David too. In this
sequel to Prometheus, the screenplay put more emotion between main
characters and more of scary horrifying form of aliens such as deadly
pathogen that can turn DNA of the host in less then 1 hour and breeds
new life form from inside it's host body. I really love this new kind
of horrifying alien form, and how Alien:Covenant build the characters
that supposed to be very competent but then easily torn aparts and
treacherous. And Ridley successfully drag audience to follow all the
way to finally acquainted with the alien that the first time Ridley
brought to screen in 1979 (xenomorph) that David called so as the
perfect creation. But, somehow i think that the parasite pathogen that
scattered everywhere in that green horror planet is more scary and more
efficient to breed vicious alien,. And by the way why the rest of the
crews not showing any surprise that they just saved by a person that
looks exactly as Walter? And there is not even conversation between
them and David where he's came from...the connection between him and
the spaceship. But i impressed the landscape shot on the green
mysterious planet..and how perfectly Daniels express her wonder that
they hear not a sound of birds or animal. If this planet has everything
that all living creatures on earth need to start a new beginning...if
this planet is a paradise..why they see nothing but just a sound of
waterfall from afar. What i actually feel about this sequel is that
Ridley bring this Alien saga into a new whole dimension of sci fi
horror...that still left questions unanswered...even since the
Prometheus..why? the big giant bald pale skin hated human?that is a big
question that still running around in my head. And Fasbender
successfully performed as 2 replicant characters at the same time the
sympathetic Walter and the psychopath genius David (psychopath? David
is a robot for haven sake...no words can describe this). Finally, this... Ridley really escalate his Alien saga not just into a deeper and darker alien movie but a step closer bringing Alien as a new legend in the film making history.

Some secrets have to remain secret. A stranger was many years in the aura of mystery, and we thought "how the hell did they come from?" — it's interesting. But Ridley Scott decided to make a series of prequels, and why not. To disclose the Foreign origin must be the one who this whole mess started. The problem is that Ridley Scott, the director, and the prequels need a great script, but it is not. "Prometheus" was a pretty fantastic movie and had almost no connection with the movie "Alien" and "Alien:Covenant" is its continuation. However, almost no connection with "Prometheus" has, except of the Android David, we don't even show the monster from the end of "Prometheus". But "Alien: Covenant" is already directly linked to the movie "Alien" and reveals to us the mystery of the origin of these deadly monsters. The problem with this film, like "Prometheus" script. He is absolutely useless. If the reason why the colonists landed on an uncharted planet can understand (though it is close and the atmosphere is right), but the fact that they landed on this planet without space suits can not be forgiven. If the colonists were to them, the film simply would not have been, nobody would have been infected, and all was well (before I met David, of course). The colonists not just dumb, they have intelligence left in a minus, besides, they cannot be called professionals in their field. The colonists very much, you are one of them remember, except for the main character and that guy in the hat, but names you don't remember, remember only their images. The characters are many and they are not disclosed. Fortunately, they die quickly, and almost all do it's pretty cool. The only interesting and compelling characters is the Android David and Walter, who brilliantly played by Michael Fassbender. David is wonderful, he is cunning, treacherous, and otherwise mocking stupid people. He is the best antagonist in the universe "Alien". The film looks great! All kinds are absolutely gorgeous. Ridley Scott is a true master of his craft, for the Director's work can not complain about, everything looks nice and cool. Scenes of fights, staging, scenery — everything is fine. The monsters look scary, and very dangerous. The film breaks into silly scenes (like the landing of the colonists without a spacesuit), and stunning (as the appearance Nepomorpha from the back). The Director pulls this film, because the script is stupid, the characters often do not behave logically, you don't can understand things not because of their stupidity, but because of the scenario of stocks. Although it is possible that "Alien: COVENANT" as "Prometheus" was mercilessly cut, so you need to wait for the uncut version. People are stupid in this film, Yes, but they behave like people. No need to find fault with their behavior in a stressful situation, they are clearly not ready for this was. The human factor makes itself known, and you already see on the screen are not actors, but real people, because they live and behave as people. The film is full of biblical references, there are references to "Hamlet", is the talk about Wagner and others, and I think this is unnecessary in this film. Movies "Alien" should be about survival, about the unknown monsters, but we got a movie about Android and his menagerie. Fear almost no sense that the heroes survive too. The film is just stuck in all sorts of references and almost tried to scare the viewer. This film is about David, not about other people and other monsters, the story of Android, imagines himself a God. Don't get me wrong, it's good, even great, but not for a movie about aliens. I have the feeling that Ridley Scott is sometimes confused scenario of this film and "Blade Runner". References to "Hamlet", the Bible is good, but we didn't go to this movie. Although the monsters are encouraging. They are deadly, smart, and now we know their origin. "Alien:Covenant" is already associated with the movie "Alien", it's beautiful, entertaining, sometimes trying to scare. It is not just a beautiful fantasy film like "Prometheus", it's about our favorite Xenomorph. But it spoils a scenario in which a feeling that just with white thread tied these poor Alien. The film is not great, but not terrible, he is just average. I left the cinema without emotion. The film didn't scare me, not pleased, but not upset, he brings a lot of new information to the history of Others, besides he filmed great, the monsters look cool. A better film "Prometheus", and perhaps the best movie about aliens from the time of the third part. Looking forward to the next movie, but for a miracle do not hope. Expand

This film takes place after the Prometheus mission had failed because of bad outcomes, and Covenant takes a huge step forward! I enjoyed Prometheus, but I though Covenant was much better and it has lots of gore. Ridley Scott is a legendary director, making this film intense and scary, and sometimes this movie did without music. The camera work is absolute stunning, and the acting fits the tone of the movie so well. Surprisingly, the recent "Alien" film is very realistic to what the reaction of people would be if they were on a ship in space, and found Alien life. Everyone cares for each other, and this movie has very distinct couples and characters, plus stunning visuals. I hope this movie gets some more recognition and love, because I think Alien: Covenant is a great film. It might be my favorite Alien film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw Alien Covenant last week. Even though I wasn`t a big fan of Prometheus (thought that it was okay), I was still excited for Covenant, and I walked out of the theater satisfied. I thought that it was a great movie.
Going into Alien Covenant, I was excited as it would return the franchise to its horror routes and bring back the Xenomorphs, along with a new monster (Neomorph) and answers questions about the iconic movie monster.

I left the theater satisfied, but wanting more (in a good way). It is definitely the best Alien movie since Aliens, while still having a few issues (no movie is perfect :D).

Plot: The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy (called Origae-6), discovers another planet which they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

The Great:

The Xenomorph. It looked amazing, similar to the original Giger design, but still a bit different when it came to its movement and its brutality. The cargo ship sequence was a big highlight, and the shower scene was actually pretty good and scary (surprisingly O_o). Another great sequence was the final one of Daniels and Tennessee hunting the Xeno across the ship, with Walter (David in disguise) helping them by tracking it and closing/opening airlocks. I have heard complains about the CG on the Xeno, but I think it looks great. The beast is definitely NOT cooked.

The Neomorph is a fantastic new addition to the franchise. It's a bit smaller then the normal Xeno, but faster and more brutal. Some of the goriest death scenes in the movie came from them. The backburster is very gory, disgusting (in a good way). It also has a fantastic scene with David (Michael Fassbender), where it reacts calm to him and doesn't attack, before Oram shows up and kills it, pissing David off (which leads to Oram get facehugged).

The creature designs and creature effects were great (except for one's effect). I am happy that H. R. Giger is credited for the creature designs at the beginning of the end credits.

Most of the characters and performances were great. I cared more about the characters in Covenant then I did for the characters in Prometheus. The best characters were Tennessee (Danny Mcbride), Walter/David (Michael Fassbender) and Daniels (Katherine Waterston).

Every scene with David and Walter. Their scenes (and how David is trying to get Walter to join him before disabling him, and taking his place on the Covenant) are the most fascinating scenes in the movie.

The Covenant ship and its hardware and technology were as great as they were in Prometheus, despite still being way more advanced then the tech in the original Alien.

The ending while predictable when it came to the reveal that Walter was David in disguise after they left the Engineer city, was still good and creepy, with David planting two Facehugger embryos along with the other (around) 1000 human embryos (probably to use the colonist as hosts to continue his experiments), and sending a final message from the Covenant as Walter before continuing on its journey to Origae-6.

The cinematography, the locations and the effects were beautiful (duh). No one directs sci-fi movies like Ridley Scott.

The Not So Great:

While I did care about most of the characters, they are complete idiots (even though I thought they were less idiotic then the ones in Prometheus, that doesn't say much). They walk around in a newly discovered alien world with no protective gear (not even hazard suits), some touch stuff that causes disaster, they trust a complete stranger and some of them separate from the main group when they know a deadly alien creature could show up anytime (and then they get killed).

The CG on the Neomorph backburster when it is no longer covered in blood looked average.

I could see the twist at the end (where Walter is actually David) coming from a mile away (though it was still a good ending).

The growing time from a chestburster to a full grown Xeno was really fast and reminded me of the AVP movies (even the time for a Facehugger to impregnate someone was really fast). The second Xeno (the one at the end of the movie) grew even way faster then the one from earlier.

The tone changes drastically some times.

Overall, Alien Covenant is a satisfying movie that returns the Alien franchise back to its horror routes, yet still having some of the action elements from Aliens. Most of the characters were great, though some were clearly only there to killed by alien monsters. The effects and cinematography were fantastic and it was a lot of fun. I can't wait to see where the story goes on from here and how it all ties into the original Alien movie from 1979.

I though that it was better then Prometheus, and it is my third favorite movie in the Alien franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you want to enjoy this movie, do yourself a favor: realize it is not an Alien movie. It is Prometheus 2. Like 100%, without a doubt, Prometheus 2. There is actually very little of the traditional "Alien" in this movie that people are expecting, and I think that's why a lot of people are reacting very negatively.

I'm guessing there were Marketing and Studio reasons to call it Alien, which screws up expectations. Marketing is screwing up the reception of the film by making people think it's something else entirely. As Prometheus 2 I really liked it. .

I think it's actually really cool how it all weaves together. The problem is people think Ridley was playing fast and loose with how the Alien ecology works - but he wasn't...90% of what we saw happening with the spores and weird looking aliens was Davids **** up creations using the "highly malleable" pathogen running amok. The alien that came out of the captain near the end was the first "true" alien born.

Sure there were some silly things like the guy getting impregnated THAT fast etc, but most of these movies have things like that (like the idiot biologist snake-charmer in Prometheus 1). That's why I give it an 8. Big mistake calling it Alien imo.

The good is I found this movie to be enjoyable while at times I felt it had some unnecessarily long scenes that lingered. I wish they didn't spend 40 minutes before descending down to the planet. Characters were likable albeit your typical bad decision making fodder. Effects were great with the exception of some CGI shots. To me it had just about the right amount of drama/plot to action ratio. I dont really understand the hate from many reviewers. There are gaps in plot and timeline issues when put side by side with other alien movies but lets be honest its an Aliens movie and they have muddled up the plot up over the years. This movie does a decent enough job of cleaning up the mess but still leaves many questions in the end. I had fun watching it and as a fan look forward to more. Its I'd say the third best Alien film. OnRidley Scott has done a great job in directing his latest film, which I consider to be a perfect combination of action and horror. The cast of actors is outstanding, especially Michael Fassbender, who develops his role in a masterly way. On the other hand, the appearance of the aliens, their structure and evolution are perfect; You can see the work that was dedicated to them, because they were not completely created by computer so that they did not suffer a loss of realism. Likewise, Covenant also has its bad points: nobody can believe the naivete of the characters ( just in minutes they researched absolutely everything about the planet, and also they do not even take any preventive measures when they arrive). Some characters stand out because of their lack of depth, such as the case of Tenessee, which I consider a great character that unfortunately was wasted. Also, there are others that you will not care what the future holds for them, if they survived or not.
In summary, I found a great movie that manages to entertain (even if you are not a fan and have not seen the previous ones) with its incredible effects and talented actors. 100% recommendable.

"Alien: Covenant" falls within the latter two. It's not as mind-blowing as the original, not as much of a rocket ride as "Aliens," but it's no "Alien 3" or "Prometheus." Anyone who has seen any of the previous movies will be entertained but not awed, as there's really nothing new here. Anyone who actually appreciated "Prometheus" will see this as a fairly seamless transition to a faster-paced sequel. For me, this was like going on your favorite amusement park ride for the 100th time. You might still enjoy it, but it doesn't have that same joy or jolt of excitement you felt the first time you sat in the chair and buckled yourself in. The story line is almost a rewrite of the original "Alien," down to the "Let's try to kill the monster this way" ending. The characters are cookie-cutter; you have a Sigourney Weaver clone (the human Sigourney from "Alien," not the superhero of the later flicks), a number of other likeable but gone-too-soon folks, the unexpected stranger, etc. My biggest negative is with the movie's predictability. I figured out the "twist" about 40 minutes in, and hoped I would be wrong. No such luck.

A person sitting near me complained that the movie should have focused more on the race introduced in "Prometheus." That's probably where the next movie (and you know they'll figure out how to do another one) is headed.

Overall, I give this movie a B for entertainment value, a C for storyline, and a C+ for execution. It's not worth a full-priced admission, but it's good as a bonus picture with a Dish Network, DirecTV, Amazon or Netflix account. It's not a wasted day, but it's not one worth being at the top of your To Do list.

Good robot! Bad robot!

After some gaps, the 'Alien' franchise came alive with the prequel 'Prometheum' which originally said to be a spin-off. Particularly, it landed in the hands of the original maker. Now, even the original title back in action. It's another prequel, hence the prequel series on the making. The next film too will be the same kind, before the overall storyline in the franchise align in a straight line.

I enjoyed it. But not as good as 'Prometheum' or the first two 'Alien' films. The issue with it was, the same old cliché. There's nothing in the story. It was like any space film that's set in a similar fashion. The 80 per cent of the film was what we had seen in the earlier 'Alien' films. Just altered scenes with a new cast and a great visuals. So the update makes it the special.

The story focused too much on the robot. The alien parts were reduced. Because it was like the first appearance of the original aliens we saw in the old films. Precisely to say, the origins. Genetic modification, crossbreeding, there comes the beast. From this film what I have learnt was, it was nothing but more or less the same old fear the humans have about that the robots which are the ones going to make humans go extinct. Except here the aliens come between them. Hence, falling prey to the same clichéd theme from any sci-fi that had humanoid.

Nevertheless, well maintained film in its balance coming from previous hits in the series and going forward to bring more hits. This flick would serve as a fine bridge between them. So only 18 years to go between this, from 2104 to 2122. I'm already anticipating the next film. As I have heard, that film would be focused more on the robot. That's going to be a different experience. Fassbender's time to have some space adventures.

I really disliked the IMAX version, which was very “in your face” and distracting. (My reaction was similar to the many coming attractions of other “action” films I saw before the main film started. I have seen many other films in IMAX – for example, Doctor Strange – and liked them.) Perhaps Ridley Scott doesn’t “get” IMAX. Regardless, my reaction went from a charitable 5 rating to an enthusiastic 7, but the irritating characters (like Tennessee) and the Walter-David confusion didn’t help my enjoyment the second time. I understand intellectually that we needed characters who were so attracted to each other that they could spend the rest of their lives together as colonists, but the disgruntled misfits in the first Alien film were more fun than these lovey-doveys. But generally the latest film was interesting and, and as a fan who has seen the other films in the series innumerable times, I enjoyed it. But the atmosphere of mystery and dread in the first Alien film and in Prometheus was much more fun and worked much better than the goings-on in this film. Expand

Disclaimer: I'm a long-time Alien series fan. It's my #1 favourite movie series to date. Yes, including Alien 3 & Resurrection. Does NOT include Alien Vs Predator!

Alien: Covenant does not disappoint. It ties into Prometheus very well and then is peppered with 1979's Alien to bring in some scares and action. The ideas introduced in Prometheus are expounded upon in Covenant through David/Walter. One now needs to ask is "Alien" the creature or really the humanesque AI being developed by Weyland? Ridley Scott shot a beautifully filmed sci-fi epic that kept me enthralled from minute 1 to the end. The only thing lacking now, with Prometheus & Covenant, is there is no character that grabs the audience like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley did back in the Alien franchise heyday. Nonetheless, Covenant deserves to be seen on the big screen and ignore the negative reviews on IMDB (and here) by the wannabe salty critics. Looking forward to the next chapter which Scott said he'd be starting to film in 14 months time.

The same people who whined about a lack of Xenomorpsh in Prometheus are not whining about an abundance of them or a lack of Engineer. If you liked Prometheus, you are gonna like this one as well. It's gory, philosophical, true to the franchise, and builds upon Prometheus. I am so looking forward to the next installment. Though I was disappointed not to find more about Engineers. They were what made Prometheus so intriguing. Expand

The film is not without flaws with a few plot holes, some occasional stale acting performances but this doesn't take too much away from the experience which had me locked in and engaged from the opening title to the ending credits. Fassbender is in top form, The film is highly-ambitious as it successfully blends the philosophical leanings of its predecessor Prometheus and its more action/horror oriented suspense and gore of its sequels Alien/Aliens. Highly-Recommended to those that enjoy there Sci-fi action flicks with a emphasis on existential reflection & psychological thrilling elements though admittedly maybe too cerebral for some. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Expand

After "Prometheus" (which I enjoyed but I thought was ultimately a bit pointless), "Covenant" returns the series to its horror roots. The movie plays to all of the "Alien" series' strengths: believable characters and camaraderie, unbearably tense situations, gross-out horror, and stunning outer space vistas. In addition to being technically impeccable, I appreciated the fact that "Covenant" is a horror movie for adults. Not only does it refuse to water down its violence, it allows the characters to have intelligent discussions without explaining everything they're saying. In our current era of bloodless PG-13 horror and endless exposition for idiots, it was a breath of fresh air. Expand

ScientistRidley Scott's latest stab in the ALIEN franchise is definetelly a mixed bag, albeit a well directed one. On one hand, it tries to tie all the plot threads from PROMETHEUS, while presenting an approximation of the original ALIEN. Scientist characters in here continue to behave in a careless manner, resulting to their deaths. On the other hand, we can still see the master at work: great cinematography, some great set pieces and gorgeous visuals. This installment reminds me a lot of JURASSIC PARK: THE LOST WORLD. Both are sequels pressured to perform, both have strange tonal inconsistencies despite being well acted. Keep you expectation lower and you'll enjoy this flick Expand

However, this does not detract from a largely more suspenseful and dark film compared to its predecessor, Prometheus. Ridley Scott handles this film with enough precision that the stories and philosophical ideas (however convoluted they may be) are treated well in the context of the over-arching plot. Though the attempts, or rather the execution of these thought-provoking ideas into the film could've been done much better. With some worthwhile action and terrorizing aliens, the blockbuster aspect of the film is done very well. And though the plot does become slightly rushed towards the end and somewhat predictable, it is still a very solid movie and a film definitely worth watching. Expand
