Thrill-seekers should be warned that this is more a surreal, nightmarish and occasionally sexually explicit trip into an adolescent’s psyche than a spook show. Boarding School includes an odd mix of narrative elements within a classically Grimm child-endangerment scenario that would work best played as a modern fairy tale. Yet Yakin chooses to pace the film more slowly as a serious drama, which keeps the suspense from building real momentum and exacerbates the script’s implausibilities. Read full review

Boarding School (2018) tackles mature thematic elements via a young cast ensemble, and provides a thoroughly enjoyable yet extremely dark 111-minutes of suspense throughout. Not for kids.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked this movie. Its redeeming feature is the excellent performance by its lead, Luke Prael, and the script has very few, if any plot holes. So, this is about 12 year old boy who gets send away to boarding school because his mother can't stand him screaming every night because he has nightmares. (Indeed, mother of the year she ain't). It's a tiny boarding school of just 7 pupils, including Christine, the daughter of his stepfathers boss. They immediately notice that there's something amiss at this school.....

What I liked about this movie is the intelligent script. The victims lack their usual, highly annoying stupidity, of trusting the perp too much, to the point of stupidity.

No one I knew had seen it so I sat down with no preconceived expectations at all.
It started slow, and I thought quirky but nothing special; but half way thorough I realised that I was enjoying it.
Well worth a go.… Expand
