Based on a book by Marty Makary, Fox's medical drama The Residentexplores some of the tough truths about the American healthcare system — from the perspective of the hospital staff who experience it firsthand each day.

The series revolves around Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), a senior resident at the fictional Chastain Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. A natural leader, he's known to break the rules from time to time, using some unconventional tactics to get his patients the best care possible.

At the beginning of the series, Conrad is introduced to Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal), a bright-eyed young doctor beginning his residency at Chastain. As Conrad shows Devon around the hospital, he isn't afraid to talk about the challenging realities of working there — including dealing with corrupt and greedy hospital executives and witnessing veteran doctors making (and covering up) deadly mistakes.

Conrad and Devon work alongside Chief of Surgery Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood), whose personal health problems are causing issues in the operating room, and nurse practitioner Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp), who cares deeply for her patients and has a romantic connection with Conrad.
