Biography: Shapiro was a writer, producer, and executive producer who often teamed with her husband, Richard Shapiro. Born Esther Mayesh, she was awarded a scholarship at age 15 to the University of Southern California, getting a degree in comparative literature. She met Richard in a writing class at UCLA in 1956 and they married four years later. Their big break as writers came when they wee hired by Warner Brothers in 1964. Following an especially bad experience with a film script in 1976, the couple moved to Europe; they returned in less than a year, vowing to write nothing they didn't produce themselves. Esther found success as ABC's Vice-President of Miniseries, leading to her and Richard teaming with Aaron Spelling to create and executive produce Dynasty.
