Melvyn Hayes

Biography: Melvyn started in showbusiness at the Comedy Theatre, London in 1950, disappearing twice daily for £4.00 a week in "Maskelyne's Mysteries", performing the Indian rope trick!. After spending the next ten years working in films, theatre and television drama, his first big break came in 1960, when he signed a seven-year film contract with Associated British Picture Corporation and starred in "No trees in the Street", "Crooks in Cloisters" and the Cliff Richard movies "The Young Ones", "Summer Holiday" and "Wonderful Life".
Early work for the BBC included the title role in the award-winning drama documentary "The Unloved", The Artful Dodger in "Oliver Twist" and Edik in "The Silver Sword". In the mid 60s he played over a thousand performances of Bill Naughton's Spring & Port Wine in London's West End. Another lucky break came in the 70's - Playing as The Bombardier and Gloria Beumont in television's "It Ain't Half Hot, Mum".

Melvyn has more than 50 films to his name, Including "The Curse of Frankenstein", "Operation Amsterdam", "Santa Clause - The Movie", "The Flesh and the Fiends" and "Carry On England", a dozen West End stage productions, many UK. And oversea theatre tours (Personal favourites include: "Play it again Sam", "Run for your Wife" and "The Dresser"), summer seasons, pantomimes and over five-hundred television shows, Including; Quatermass, Billy Bunter, The Double Deckers, The Thin Blue Line and Drop the Dead Donkey, and radio shows to his credit.

He is also at home in cabaret or as an after dinner speaker and as a familiar face on television and radio commercials. He has provided the voice for many cartoon series both in this country and for Walt Disney and Hanna Barbera in Hollywood - including "Superted", "The Dreamstone", "Alfred J Quack", "Little Dracula" and the Duchess of York's Budgie!. Melvyn has performed many Variety shows and has been invited to be many stars on "The Queen's Mother's 90th Birthday Celebrations."

Whilst playing mate to Windsor Davie's captain to Dick Whittington at the London palladium, Melvyn was the subject to Thames television's "This is your Life."

Recent work has included: Do Nothing Until you hear from Me, a pilot for radio 4, "Pongwiffy", a twenty-six part cartoon series being shown on BBC, "So you think you're a good Driver?", also on BBC, variety tour of "It AIn't Half Fun, Mum", "Revolver", a sketch show with a difference. For BBC1, "That Reminds Me" and anecdotal "one man show". For radio 4 and Peter and the Wolf (a narration with the Stratford upon Avon Swan Orchestra). At the Edinburgh Festival, he performed a new play called "Saved By Sex" (Unfortunately it wasn't!).

Melvyn is currently recording; Doctor Who - Shada, a six part serial for Audio Cassette, and recently performed in the London production of "The Beespoke Overcoat", a part he has waited 50 years to play!.
