Saskia Garel

Biography: Saskia, born in Kingston Jamaica, immigrated to Toronto, Canada with her family at the age of 6. Her exotic look is a result of a mixture of Chinese, Spanish and African flavours. In her final year of high school at the persuasive coaxing of her friends and family, Saskia enrolled in Toronto's well renowned Claude Watson School of the Arts and majored in voice. She was then accepted to York University and pursued the study of jazz music and for four years where she fronted various jazz combos under the direction of some of Toronto's finest Jazz gurus. She graduated from York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours degree and was awarded the Oscar Peterson Scholarship. During her 4 years at York, she also performed in the group Coconut Groove (top 40, latin and world beat music) and played the Toronto nightclub circuit. She won 2 Juno Awards for best R&B recording for "Call My Name" and "Once in a Lifetime" off the same album. Love & Sas toured Canada twice as well as the US and the UK. They had 5 music videos running in high rotation on Much Music and had 3 top ten hits in Canada. Her many talents include Latin dancing for which she has won many competitions and in their inaugural year she danced on the NBA Raptors dance team. She also got herself an agent and began auditioning for commercials, TV series, and movies and took several workshops in acting as she was bitten by the acting bug. This no doubt helped her land the lead role as Mimi, in the Canadian Production of the Pullitzer Prize winning Broadway show RENT and the part of Jasmine on the TV series Nightman, a Glen Larson Production where she starred as a singer in 10 episodes that season. Saskia was then offered the role of Judy, a playboy bunny, in the ABC Movie of the Week, A Tale of Two Bunnies which also starred Marilu Henner and Rhea Perlman. She then landed the leading role of Nala in yet another Broadway show, the LION KING which opened in Toronto in April 2000 and went on to do it in Los Angeles and Chicago. Now Saskia is recurring in UPN's hit sitcom One on One as Danielle, Flex's girlfriend and former therapist. She now lives in Los Angeles and is eager to pursue film and television fulltime. Expand
