It packs a lot into just four episodes, and the story eventually comes full circle. So, with multiple twists and turns to what was already advertised as an incredibly bizarre story, and bold characters to match, Gunther's Millions is sure to keep you entertained.
Gunther’s Millions presents an unbelievable story that goes from ridiculous to insane, but in a way that keeps the audience on its toes.
To traipse through all of the sex-cult allegations, Vatican baby-theft worries, and more sex-cult allegations just to end up where we first started is annoying to say the least. This isn’t to say that Gunther’s Millions is a waste of time, more that it prioritizes an experience it doesn’t deliver on—the crown jewel of true crime media: the ultimate “gotcha!” moment—instead of focusing on the ones it does.
In this genre, earning the “weird” label can be half the battle, and “Gunther’s Millions” certainly qualifies. Still, the docuseries actually operates on various levels, and while its canine star (currently Gunther VI, incidentally) appears to be a good boy, the coverage surrounding him is evidence of how the media can go to the dogs in more ways than one.
The filmmakers hold back on a lot of key information. ... Depending on your point of view, this either makes for good viewing or feels like a cheat.
What we have here – once again – is a slim story needlessly strung out over multiple episodes.
Gunther was always used for a series of publicity stunts – the Madonna mansion, the purchase of an Italian football team and installation of a porn star as its president. The makers of this documentary are simply facilitating another one.
