The fly-on-the-wall nature of the film, directed by Sam Jones, should appeal not only to fans of Dylan and the artists involved, but also to anyone interested in the process of songwriting.
It’s all very evocative, creating a perfect mood for the complete “Basement Tapes” sessions that, surprise surprise, have just been released.
For the most part, Lost Songs feels like a 106-minute commercial.
Jones’ attempts to replicate the history of “The Basement Tapes” falls flat.... That’s too bad, since there’s a lot to savor here, even for those who can’t name more than a few of Dylan’s signature songs.
