There are major changes overall, like the main character of Amy, who's ethnicity and age have been changed- in the book she's just a little blond girl of 6, very much a child with no personality- yet in the series she's a streetwise 10 year old and I guess it works better since she is a stronger character in it.

The addition of the dream sequences is also a big change from the book. Season 1 in fact just really covers the first half of book 1, which starts the apocalypse. Everything is explained beforehand, and the main baddie is already introduced here (he doesnt appear in person or is even identified until book 3, so they mixed up a lot of plots form all three books). The actress who plays Amy is in fact the best actor in the whole series. Wolgast (who is played by Zack from Saved by the Bell) is pretty lousy (he still acts the same even after he got shot in one episode), as is the other adults in the show.

All in all, a "passable" adaptation I guess.
