The pattern of crapping all over great books (e.g. Rings of Poop), movies (e.g. everything Star Wars since 1983) and shows (e.g. everything "Star Trek" since Enterprise) continues. Willow is more garbage writing from the arrogant children of the modern entertainment industry. The characters are flat, uninteresting stereotypes, while the plot is uninspired and generic. This farce in no way captures the magic of the original and isn't worth wasting time watching. Another abysmal failure. Expand

Disney has become the largest manufacturer of junk content and they are ruining absolutely all their contents, the current level is unfortunate, everything is politicized for their woke agenda.

I'm glad all their content is failing one after another, and they are going under financially.

They deserve it for obsessing, in indoctrinating people.

Fire those responsible now and change course, neutral content for the public, and not this progressive garbage, which only represents the greatest of disasters.

Mixed feelings. Where is Ron Howard here? I cannot understand certain scenes that get me out in every episode: modern music and costumes in a medieval fantasy? Why? Was it needed ?

Where is the original willow fantasy , adventure and music???

Lazy and sloppy storytelling with seemingly no awareness of what made the original so good. The charm, language, character depth and humour has been replaced by dialogue full of ear wincing modernisms that has no place in a fantasy world. Lazy plot devices abound and plot holes are aplenty. It's not even shot well, the costumes look cheap and the fight sequences are shot in the jason bourne style of quick cuts and jaunty angles which, again, do not work in fantasy. You want to see the sword fights as we did in the original, you want to see the danger and the high stakes on screen, not an over-reliance on CGI and camera trickery. It's appalling that this was allowed to hit screens. If I were Disney, I would have done a WB and taken this as a tax write down when I starting seeing the edits. Truly woeful. Expand

If they had made it a new and original series it would have been a clean slate to do as they chose. This just isn’t Willow at all and really opened themselves to the harshest criticism. Rating it as a stand alone title and not as a Willow story, still leaves it with acting/writing/story telling that is cringy at best. The humor seems meant for the preteen crowd but the story appropriate for a more mature audience. I can’t imagine either group particularly enjoying it as a whole. Sadly most of the positive reviews rate it highly because they feel the need to defend Disney and it’s decisions rather than leave an objective unbiased opinion of it. Expand

The great story, the fantastic screenplay, the catchy soundtrack, Val Kilmer in one of his best roles, the young talented Warwick Davis convinced with his strong acting performance. Everything was right, everything was beautiful. For a few hours I was trapped in a fantasy world and enchanted! A milestone in the fantasy film genre. In 2022, a new TV show should build on the success of the then-masterpiece. What junk has become of it! It makes you cry, even this true classic has been messed up! Soiled! Thrown in the dirt! Terrible! The series has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the outstanding old movie! Then there are these insufferable lesbians... Well, I am...it is clearly for teenagers as it is full of teen angst and teen problems. This is a strange decision considering how even most 20 somethings have no clue this movie exists yet the series is based on it and pulls from the original cast but instead gears the show to a completely different audience.

These companies need to make up their minds. Either bring back old media and tailor them to the audience that actually remembers them, or just make something new. The first 5 minutes of the first episode compared with the movie offer a stark comparison to the overall tone and quality. The show seems to have forgotten everything that made the movie good and instead feels more like a Netflix teen fantasy show. Perhaps it gets good later? I have no intention of finding out.

The beautiful scoreHonestly, I had been looking forward to watching this quite a bit. I was a kid when the original came out, I remember running around Backyards choosing who got to be Mad Mardigan, sticks for swords and wands, all that. The beautiful score by James Horner, story by George Lucas, and Direction by Ron Howard it's like.... why did you do this?

This show starts off as garbage like RIGHT away. It starts off like a bad, overly colorful and saturated CW show. The tone is NOTHING, and I mean absolutely NOTHING like the original. The characters are vapid and bland, chosen clearly for their looks and not their acting ability, and The gritty, often ugly Medieval fantasy world of the original film is completely absent.

And here's the part that plenty of internet warriors will come out straight away and say "SEE, it's just because they're a biggot that they didn't like it" but no, I'm sorry, this was NOT an lgbtq story, it just wasn't. Tossing it in as the front and center reason to watch, it's like... who is this for? It's clearly not for me, who grew up with the story, and I would imagine I ought to be the target audience for the nostalgia factor. Inclusion is great, and multicultural diversity is great, all of that, but NOT when it's hijacking an existing story to be a vehicle for it. TONS of content exists for that demographic without taking our childhood stories and applying "woke" to them.

The slang tries to be cool but is outdated. The plot makes sense and has potential but is rushed so when the scenes try to be serious or hit home the tension isn't there to allow one to actually feel what the scenes are trying to convey. It's just a terrible show. Devoid of tension, emotion, or humor. Warwick's acting is so flat and emotionless. I'm upset with myself that I spent 8 episodes trying to watch it. And I've sat through a lot of trash TV. Why tf did the main characters hair color change over the course of the story? Was there an explanation for this? I will say there are some positive aspects of the show. I love the fact that Disney is leaning into a racially and sexually progressive agenda. I think this is very important for more tolerant and progressive society. I think the show is also visually stunning. I like the outfits. But none of these positive things are enough to save the show. I didn't watch the original because of its poor critical reception and I would have considered it had this show been okay but i'm definitely not gonna watch it now. Expand

So when I heard this series was coming, I was actually a bit optimistic as I thought this must be a passion project to revive, they must have a really good idea and a lot of good will for the IP.

But no. Nope. Not in the slightest.

This is a disaster in nearly every single way imaginable. It is the new quintessential example of a studio butchering a beloved IP for... well, not profit, this won't make them a penny surely, but... I dunno, does some Disney exec get off on producing this kind of terrible crap or something?

We're living through a Disney dark age, and a TV/movie dark age as a whole - Willow truly encapsulates it. No heart, no competence, the only reason it doesn't score a 0 from me is Warwick Davis is trying his bloody heart out here with absolutely nothing to work with. It's one of those TV shows that you watch scratching your head wondering who the hell it's aimed at - it's like the director/scriptwriters are from an alien planet.

Terrible.

It was epic, magical, and very important to my childhood. Now Jonathan Kasdan has decided to take this beloved classic and use it as a vehicle for identity politics, catering to the smallest percentages of our population. Fantasy should be about entertaining, not preaching socio-political talking points. It should be about writing circumstances relatable to the vast majority of the population. Instead, we get unrelatable relationships placed at the forefront, relegating Willow and the tale as mere background noise. In addition, it's poorly written, using modern teenage dialogue and cheap, plastic-looking sets and costumes. So what classic is next on Disney's hit list? Expand

I wanted to like this show. I was excited for this show. Willow the movie was, while not perfect, certainly watchable, and had some interesting content. This show has few redeeming qualities, and most of those are by accident. The budget must be tiny, as I'm pretty sure the outfits were bought at J.Crew and altered by the underpaid, overworked seamstress. "How am I expected to make authentic medieval clothing by altering a denim jacket!" Poor Warwick Davis has got to be embarrassed. I see what they are trying to go for with most of the actors, but they fail, in every way, to create a believable character the audience can connect with. Landscapes are nice, but mother nature is responsible for that. Combat scenes: no authenticity...bland, not believable. I do kind of like the Alora character, but she's still poorly written and directed. Show is not immersive, and fails in every way. Boring. Expand

This show is awful. Everything that made the original film the standout fantasy story that it was is missing. Avoid, especially if you don’t want to reflect back on even the beloved film and now feel overcome with nausea rather than nostalgia.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I grew up in the 1980s and Willow was definitely a favorite. I was excited for the series, until about halfway through episode 1. At first I thought we were gonna get a buddy adventure between the two female leads and I thought, "Wow, this could work: two female adventures going on a quest to save the world!" That excitement quickly dashed when I realized that this was going to be another rehashing of every woke person's wet dreams. Mad Martigans son a wuss, didn't see that coming. Why is everything that my generation loved and cherished being destroyed? I cant even watch the rest of the series now because i know where its going and dont care. Can we not have this wokeness in our faces at every turn. We get it. Plus, the director defending it as "organic " and "not intentional" is a load of BS. Expand

Another installment of "The message"
Willow, the next low-effort product on Disney+ and pretty much the personification of everything bad about modern writing.
Let Disney continue is what I say. They will become the architects of their own demise.

I grew up watching the movie on VHS over and over it was my introduction to fantasy. The writing is horrible the dialogue is terrible and the characters are insufferable in every way imaginable.

We can fix all this so easily, look around your writers room , find the people who are writing to push their own world view and just get rid of them. It's time to stop this stuff, come on. Lord of the rings, wheel of time, witcher, bloody...even He-Man , how many amazing IP'S are getting obliterated because of poor writing choices. It's time to get back to hiring talent based on merit and not on their political leaning.

Alright, I'll sacrifice myself by giving it a ... 5/10, no, 4/10.

The actors, the dialogues, the costumes... It all feels half-hearted, underfunded, like some British series that tries to compete with American blockbusters without a proper team and budget. Maybe the next episodes will be better, but, please. This is not okay. And guess who is the director of the first episodes? A British nobody (no offense) who did nothing worth mentioning in years. And, literally, the writer who messed up the film Solo.

A shame, really. A wasted opportunity. The original Willow had a certain depth and magic to the actors, storytelling, and direction, without being a major production. But let's be honest here: Ron Howard is an Oscar-winning legend as a director. He knew his stuff. The new Willow series lacks all that, and maybe, it is because of the lack of talent in direction and writing. Just maybe.

Willow is a side character and show is obviously not about him, and I say this as LGBT person, its obvious what they are doing.
Nobody who makes these kind of movies is a talented independent director.
Yes, characters talk like modern age colleague kids, because someone who makes a tv show about 3-5 WOMEN on a quest to rescue a WHITE STRAIGHT MEN with two Indians and yea there's a little white guy because show needs to make money.
World feels nothing like it did in a movie, absolutely non-immersive, same with Rings of Power.

I understand they don't want generic white male with the fellowship but how they killed off that old man on a horse with an arrow was hilarious and I do wonder what the reaction would be if the genders were opposite and they killed of the only woman like that.

It was not a perfect film but it had heart and character. The Disney+ sequel may be titled Willow but in it Willow is a supporting character. Disney, like Hollywood has done for decades, can't envision Warwick Davis as doing anything but being in a supporting role so the focus can be on the 'tall' people. They should know better after a decade of Peter Dinklage finally being acknowledged not for his medical condition but for the fantastic actor he is.

There are many problems with this television show. And, no, representation is not one of them. It's a good thing for the show to have a lesbian couple front and center. Well, it would be if the white woman didn't use her power and privilege to dominate and control the woman of color who serves as her love interest. Instead of writing a positive, realistic, or even nuanced lesbian romance the writers went with toxic (not sure that was intentional but that's what it ended up as). Princess Kit comes across as mean, rude, selfish, controlling, and short-sighted. It does not help that she is also very poorly portrayed by Ruby Cruz; who speaks and acts as if Kit is attending a party on a show on the CW, rather than partaking in a grand fantasy adventure. Though the pointless drama here is so abysmal that even CW writers would pause for a rewrite.

Willow is worse than 'bad'. It's worse because it actually has potential that it completely squanders. The worldbuilding and plot are engaging. Warwick Davis oozes charisma. Many of the characters are interesting and some of their actors are trying. But the writing and directing squanders all of that. When an old mentor character is killed suddenly, no one even shows a sign of caring. Most of the dialogue is mean and petty, full of nasty quips and put downs, that fills like it comes from middle schoolers rather than young adults - especially knights and future rulers. The heavy focus on Princess Kit - easily the worst character in the show - does it no favors.

At first, the series starts with some nice intros, you think, "oh, its leading to some good reveals and 're'introductions," but that is not what you get. You get a show that initially says, hey, look here and not there. Elora is great for what she is, but then, then you have the rest of the cast. I do not know why everything is embracing sexualization in movies, games and TV. Just keep it out. There was no need to share a homosexual moment in the first episode of the show. Why? What was it there for? Why? Was this in the original movie? You can guess. Was the source material followed? No. With regard to this narrative, it is not focused, it is not developed, and worst of all, within two minutes of watching some scenes, you automatically know what is going on and where it will go. Writing is not original, it is culture based. Cinematography is lazy with angles and relies on effects. I do not support this movie adaptation except in Warwick's performance and his heart that you can feel from the first. Expand

It has none of the creativity of other Disney-owned series such as The Mandalorian, Loki, or WandaVision. In those series, the stories were supported by a strong cast and excellent writing. That is almost completely absent in Willow, which is missing virtually all of the charm and magic of the original movie. Instead, the series is more driven by "the message," and so it ends up being flat, lifeless, and contrived. Additionally, the cast is weak, unconvincing, and the acting is anachronistic. Warwick Davis is basically carrying the series. There are many cringe moments which make viewing downright uncomfortable. The melodramatic teenage angst and the forcing of "the message" in the first episode is absolutely unbearable. It does get better in the second and third episodes, but it seems too little too late. It's really sad, this could have been awesome, but Disney apparently hasn't learned its lesson yet. Expand

Many thingsDisney has once again tried to force their agenda and political views onto their viewers. Also the story lack alot of logic. There is so many times I just wondered if they were in a rush or the story tellers just are that bad. Many things that doesn't makes sense. But Im here fot Warrick. Being a man that grew up in the 80s it was pure joy seeing him play one of my favorite childhood character again. Just so sad Val Kilmer is sick and cant portray Madmardigan again. I wish him all the best. Such a good actor. If you can ignore its silly wokeism that they have to throw in here and there, it was better than Ring of Power atleast. The difference that makes me like it in any case compared to other series is that the team behind the vfx and those who filmed are damn good at their job. So it was a feast for the eyes several times. The magical battles and effects were neat. They had given the magic their own style. The humor was there as well and didn't feel exaggerated and the tv serie doesnt take itself to serious. It felt "Willoish". Just to bad the wokeism agenda must be there in between cause that nonsens does take itself way to serious. That's why in a show like willow that agenda feels even more out of place. You notice the show is of course aimed at children, but it absolutely works for adults too. You notice that here the production team is more experience at Disney i comare to other (cough amazon look and learn) where the create more value for the money they put it. So I give two thumb up for the vfx teams and camera team. Youre the reason I could give it a mediocre rating. Otherwise it would be a 2. Expand

I am not going to rate for zero because I watched a few episodes, and then I watched original again… and original is so much better. This tv series made me super sad about what they did with this ip.
Writers these days are mega lazy, how it is they cannot create new ip to put all the inclusion stuff in but they need to break existing ips. Each new tv series (when it’s book adaptation or just reboot or remake) is the same you have inclusion group on the quest with inclusion propaganda and main story and characters changed from original sometimes too much.

Writers, please create new IPs I will be glad to watch something fresh. I want to see nice gay movie, new tv series… but when you feeling quota of colorful and gay people in a team it’s just wrong. It’s counterproductive, it makes production just poor. We need high quality, and we need to have diversity (not every series being exactly the same scheme)

Do not recommend this to anyone.

Can a person of color or someone who identifies as LGBTQ+ be in a fantasy show without insecure people stating there's some kind of agenda at play? is it "woke" because they exist? Straight white coupling make up 80-90% of what we see in movies/tv shows, why are there no comments about that being shoved down our throats?
The shows is pretty mid right now, but I sincerely hope that people can get past their own BS and judge the SHOW for being a show. None of these extremely negative reviews indicate anything about the show except that there happens to be "woke" characters in it.

It seems hairy, disgruntled trolls not only crawl upside down under castle bridges, but also make a home here on Metacritic. Disney's Willow may be a lot of things, but it is most certainly not a big fat red zero. It is unexpected. It is often laugh out loud hilarious. It is mature and self-aware. It is cinematic and (especially Episode 7) quite close to a framable work of art. It's not perfect. There are Young Adult tropes used that feel a little too familiar. There are moments when danger doesn't seem to have the gravity is should. But you forgive those moments when you remember you're watching a children's fantasy adventure. If you enjoyed Syfy's The Magicians, you will find a familiar tone and intention here, where timeless fantasy is injected with sarcastic, modern, and entirely lovable wit. Maybe it's that same palpable joy that has attracted so many curmudgeons, hungry to rain on the parade and make someone pay for turning Luke Skywalker into a milk-sucking hermit. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know, in really surprised that there are some folks out here trying to compare this to Rings of Power, but also saying it's better than Willow. It personally feels like to me, a lot of these reviews have either not watched the movie or they are not remembering it correctly.

I was sad to see that it appears Val Kilmer couldn't reprise their role as Madmartigan, but it would make sense he was either missing or killed in combat. His character wasn't the type to settle down or start a family.

The level of disrespect Willow has received is also fairly frustrating to me, but I had to remind myself that Bavmorda's child is now in charge, she got hers, so to Hell with everyone else. That itself isn't surprising or frustrating.

I've enjoyed my stay so far, there's a lot of folks complaining about the acting but I can't honestly say I understand where they're coming from. I think some of the actors may be struggling a bit, but for the most part I'm happy with their performance.

At the very least, I'm waiting until the end to cast final judgment, unlike Rings of Power which I continue to fall asleep too.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't get the hate. The show is better than average. Even though the film is a childhood favorite, I can admit that it was never very good. So I had real low expectations for the show, and although it's not great, it was much better than I thought it could be. Yeah, Disney had to cast and staff it with a diversity checklist, at least the cast and crew seem mostly more than competent. Willow was a Lord of the rings rip off like star wars was a flash Gordon rip off. That said, this show goes from ok generic fantasy to competent generic fantasy and with the last two episodes it became a good generic fantasy Yes, the writing is frequently bad
Yes many of the directors should get some coaching.
Yes it could use some tighter editing
Yes the costumes and casting were frequently distractingly modern
But! The last two episodes left me wanting more.
I wish they had been wise enough to let some of the surprises sit with us for a while before we found out so and so is really the chosen one or isn't really dead.
It could have used a few more episodes.
Everything after the stupid bone pirates or whatever they're called was pretty damn good though.
The last few episodes were more than successful at creating a magical atmosphere and compete heroes journey.
I probably would've given it an 8 if the last episode hadn't revealed how simply they could've made good Star wars sequels. I'm still bitter about the incompetence of Lucas film. Since Disney and Lucas film won't promote people on merit, maybe they should shut the studio down.
Please finish willow first, and keep the hack frauds away

There are lots of shows, particularly in the fantasy genre, where I stop watching halfway through because nothing seems to work, and I always wonder: who are the people who like this crap? In this case, I guess it is me.

I see the problems the show has, like how the narration frequently skips a beat, or how the abrupt tonal shifts between silly quips and somber moments undercut each other's impact.

But still, I really enjoy the characters and the actors, I find the quips and particularly the delivery hilarious, and I enjoy how the story feels both very familiar and very weird at the same time. It is a bit like Alice in Wonderland meets Final Fantasy and everybody has a great time. Except apparently the people who watch it who are not me. And again, I understand why, but believe me, this is a fantastic show and I wish there were more like it.

Edit: Oh, I just went through the reviews, turns out it isn't really that bad. About 80% seem to dislike the show because it is not white enough and not heterosexual enough. So it isn't about quality, but that the show does not fit their agenda. And then they come here and leave angry downvotes. How sad and weird.

I missed this kind of fantasy. Fantasy that isnt edgy and about the worst of humanity, but rather a fun adventure story of likable characters.

It has a lot of comedy and doesn't worrying about focusing on grimdark lore and violence. Almost like Avatar: The Last Airbender in tone, it manages to balance comedy, wonder, and deeper themes about life in an unusually good coming of age adventure.

It's not as amazing a show overall as the early seasons of Game of Thrones, but nothing in the live action fantasy genre is. Willow's strength is that it's a completely different type of fantasy story focused on fun characters, comedic banter, and a feeling of adventure as you travel through a strange new world. Given that the classic movie had a silly tone throughout and was, above all, a series of cool filmmaking set pieces with a plot that sometimes seemed like an afterthought, they've done a good job here.

Scrolling through the user reviews, it once again seems like most of the negative reviews are just review bombs trying to tank the score with a big fat 0. Do people not realize that this just makes the user review average useless? A lot of the review bombers seem to be complaining about something called "wokeness" which seems to mean something like... letting black actors play characters in a fantasy world? Good times guys.

That said, I'm sure there are people who prefer grimdark fantasy and are disappointed by the lighthearted, young-adult-fantasy tone of this story that is about 50% comedy, 30% adventure and mystery, 10% fight scenes and 10% innocent romance. For those folks there's already watching the first 5-7 seasons of Game of Thrones... and then making up your own ending. Does anyone really expect a more serious tone in a follow up to the movie Willow?

An utterly fantastic adventure akin to a D&D campaign. Sure, sometimes it borders on cheesy, but that’s what makes it work. I laughed, I cheered, and I was on the edge of my seat. What else do you need?

It's fun, plain and simple, and a refreshing change from all of the Very Serious and/or Dark fantasies that have dominated the genre as of late. It's great that it doesn't take itself too seriously and is quick to subvert/satirize so many fantasy tropes. More importantly, it has a true sense of adventure. These people are on a quest, and there's chaos and excitement, humor and romance, danger and downtime. The spirit of the film is alive and well. I also love that the show is taking time to explore the characters and their dynamics with one and other. I've seen others compare it to a live action D&D campaign, and while I have no experience there, it does bring to mind playing a traditional RPG--in the best possible way. (No video game adaptation has come close to capturing this magic.) Meanwhile, the cast is terrific. (I was grinning ear to ear during the first episode at how well they crafted/cast the children of Madmartigan and Sorsha.) I am endeared to all of the characters and invested in the story and relationships of each and every one. (And, shippers, all of the ships are just spot on terrific!) I get that there are some out there who wanted the show to be more self-important, but I honestly think that if they just took the show as it is they could find something to enjoy. (Really perplexed at the people who complain about the jokes in the show and then post a gif of Madmartigan twirling and dropping his sword.) I've loved the movie since I was kid, and am loving this series as well. I'm also loving that it is a fantasy show that can actually be watched to tweens and teens. I work with teens, and those that have watched are very much into it. (Anecdotally, one even convinced their parents to keep their Disney+ subscription while Willow airs.) It's great that it is attracting a new generation rather than just pandering to nostalgia and fanservice for the middle-aged. (Hi!) All in all this is a show that brings me joy. It may not be perfect, but it certainly has potential if it is allowed grow/continue. It makes me happy, and I'm glad it exists. Here's hoping we get the next two season! Expand

This was such a fun, casual D&D adventure, contrasted with modern elements, and I had a blast watching it. While humor took the main stage, the drama and action had their own time well played in the spotlight. Well done!
