The fairly simplistic gameplay mechanics may not appeal to rallying purists, but anyone looking for an accessible, if somewhat unorthodox, racing title will find much to enjoy here.
A solid, yet simple rally game that works for what it tries to do. Its lack of vehicle customization restrict its appeal, and hinders its chance against heavy hitters like Colin Mcrae 3 and even GT3’s rally mode.
Poor graphics, limited car selection, and arbitrary track design mar the experience greatly, which is quite frustrating when there are some very nice qualities present in the game as well.
Mostly a scenic buzz through Africa and little else. [July 2002, p.120]
Although each car handles differently, the off-road speedsters are extremely loose, which makes for perfecting turns a frustrating task.
GTC: Africa isn't a bad game, but almost all of its components are average at best, and unlike other games in this genre, it lacks any one outstanding feature or notable aspect.
It is without a shadow of a doubt the perfect example of the most mediocre racing game I've ever seen. [July 2002, p.100]
