Only by exploring mysterious portals leading to disturbing alternate worlds will Henry begin to uncover clues as to why he is trapped. However, in true Silent Hill fashion, mysterious new characters, horrendous creatures, and the undead will use any means necessary to impede his progress. A tense atmosphere and grotesque enemies will get the player's heart thumping as Silent Hill 4 delivers a gameplay experience that fans and newcomers will never forget. Using state of the art technology, the development team has effectively created bone-chilling effects to add to the game's creepy atmosphere. Players will be able to see changes in environments over time, as the alternate world seeps into reality. In addition, Silent Hill 4 shifts between the first and third-person perspective, which is a first for the series. Beautifully detailed environments, a haunting soundtrack and the game's trademark psychological horror complete Silent Hill 4's overall fear factor as players travel between the room and their worst nightmare. The large number of cut scenes seems a little distracting at first, but once you get used to them, they add a lot of depth to the game.
  2. It's the details that we love in this game...Graphics are wonderful, too...Just dont play it in the dark.
  3. The eeriness of the environments, even your room feels dingy, is captured brilliantly, and the tunnel effect is awesome.
  4. A damned scary game, and it's one of the better survival horror titles out there because of that. It's good to see its designers taking risks and experimenting with the formula. This time, however, it's kind of a misfire. It's by no means a failure, but it's not a success, either.
  5. But, if you are looking to partake in a definitive step forward for the survival horror genre…I’m afraid that Silent Hill 4 does not take it.
  6. Look at it one way, and it's a choking journey with unprecedented attention to unease and psychological horror, a game framed with unparalleled sophistication. From another angle, it's just a clunky PSone throwback, with all the design wit of a dodo. [Aug 2004, p.92]
  7. Fans of the series will have plenty to be happy about, but you can’t help feeling you’ve been here and done that in the previous games. That’s the real horror here.

The soundtrack is as lovelyGraphics only slightly improved, but they are better than previous titles--that is to say, they are pretty good. The soundtrack is as lovely as ever, ranging from beautiful to gritty and scary. While many complain about the controls, I really didn't have any issue with them; while they are a departure from the standard, it is easy to get used to them. It has scares, and weird bits, and boring find-the-key sequences, but if you like scary games there is no reason to skip it. Expand

Yeah I gave 3 for the graphics and the probably good story until now (I've just started). SH4 nightmare is its controls. NO, they aren't different and innovative and original or whatever..they are STUPID and ANNOYING. It's puzzling to me how could a game company release a game with that kind of controls. It just ruined everything. I'm curious to know how the story unfolds but I don't think I'll get over the controls. I want the GAME to give me a challenge NOT the game ENGINE. Expand

And when I'm not looking at myself, the camera is often too close too really see my surroundings, or I'm viewing myself from the side rather than seeing into the distance. Pity, because the plot seems very weird/interesting. I hung with it for about an hour but gave up after being killed and faced with the prospect of having to start the level over. Oh yes, they screwed up the save feature, too. This is a Konami console port. Moral? NEVER buy a Konami port--they've done this with their other games as well. Expand
