This Simulation separates the Men from the boys . Steel Beasts is used to train real Tank crews in many Forces around the World .

Bar none, the best Tank sim on the market today, but it has a very steep learning curve.

I agree with the others that this is *the* tank *simulator*, so far. (SB2, to be released late 2003 will be even better.) It's not that great as a *game* though, only very very good. There still are some issues that IMO doesn't make it a 10 though. Most of these are the result of lacking implementation time and/or CPU power. * Limited terrain features. It's not that great as a *game* though, only very very good. There still are some issues that IMO doesn't make it a 10 though. Most of these are the result of lacking implementation time and/or CPU power. * Limited terrain features. No paved roads and no bridges, two dominant features in most terrain. * Very limited tactical AI capabilities (can spot, shoot and take cover, but that's about it) and no strategic AI whatsoever. This is a deliberate design feature, but makes single player scenario design a bit more complicated. * "Skins/textures" can be easily modified to ones own liking. This is an ambivalent feature. You can make/use even more realistic looks if you want the challenge, or you can make all opponent vehicles bright orange, giving you a definite edge in spotting... - The lack of air assets is a deliberate blessing. A flight of helicopters (about a dozen) would make the battle very one sided; either the helicopters spotted the tanks first, wiping them out, or the other way around... - Another great feature is the huge multiplayer support. The program support up to 360 players per side (Max 180 tanks per side, two players/tank), but the actual limitation lies in bandwidth available and server CPU power. Expand

Great game for tank enthusiasts. Only minus is missing airsupport.

Your first impression will be the dated graphics. Then you'll be hooked by the amazingly realistic sounds, and then you'll be totally addicted as the immersive game play pulls you in. No combat game puts you in the middle of a tactical problem as thrillingly and completely as Steel Beasts - start learning now so you're ready for the release of SB2! :)

Although the graphics aren't the best, the game has great gameplay multiplayer capibility.

  1. Yet another indie game that totally blows away what the faceless corporations put out.
  2. It combines both simulation and wargaming elements to produce a superb gaming experience.
  3. A no-frills tank sim that has a very solid base but not a great deal in terms of extras or window-dressing. Tank sim fans will find this a pleasing and detailed addition to their collection but anyone who is looking for the latest graphics, frantic shooting or options by the bucketload will not find them here.
